Three DP World Tour wins, a surge up the Race to Dubai, and a showdown with Rory McIlroy — Marco Penge’s breakthrough year couldn’t be written.

Few stories have captured attention like Marco Penge’s. From the edge of losing his DP World Tour card 12 months ago, the 27-year-old Englishman has turned setbacks into three DP World Tour titles this season and is in a close chase of Rory McIlroy in the Race to Dubai, while also notching a PGA Tour card for next season.

Penge has arrived in the United Arab Emirates for the DP World Tour Play-Offs, with a rapidly transformed career as he looks to pip World Number Two Rory McIlroy, to the Harry Vardon Trophy.

“He’s obviously a bit of a role model and inspires me a lot,” Penge says on McIlroy. “It’s nice to be going head-to-head with him. We’ll see what happens.”

It’s been a remarkable rise for a player who was fighting to keep his DP World Tour card just one year ago in Korea. Penge needed a birdie on the last hole at the 2024 Genesis Championship to make the cut and secure his playing rights. “That day was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been,” he recalls. “But when that putt dropped, I knew I belonged out here.”

Even off the course, a knee operation, a suspension, and career-threatening setbacks might have ended other players’ dreams. Penge, however, has used those challenges as fuel. “I think my best attribute is probably my mentality,” he says. “The attitude to bounce back and accept failure.

“Winning’s great, but it still comes with mental tiredness. I love a challenge. I love proving people wrong. That’s the whole reason why I play the game.”

2025 Hainan Classic. Eurasia Sport Images / Getty Images

After a healthy amateur career, Penge turned professional in 2017, and first made a dent in headlines in 2023, when he won the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos before claiming the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final in Mallorca just six weeks later. The victories secured him the number one spot on the HotelPlanner Tour’s Road to Mallorca Rankings and promotion to the DP World Tour. “To be standing there saying I’d won twice and finished No.1 was hard to imagine,” he says. “It hadn’t quite sunk in, but I was over the moon.”

His DP World Tour rookie season, that began under pressure, ended with a glimpse of his ability to perform having made just 10 cuts in the whole season but eventually was enough to keep his card in Korea, giving him a free run again in 2025.

If that wasn’t stressful enough, a breach of DP World Tour regulations led to a suspension for Penge over the winter period 12 months ago.

“When I found out I would not be able to play for a couple of months, I sat down with my team and said, ‘This has happened now. How can we make sure we come back as strong as we can?’” The plan, he explains, involved improving every department of his game while building the confidence that would carry him through the season.

Penge then returned to the DP World Tour in February of this year with three consecutive top-20 finishes before his breakthrough win at the Hainan Classic in April, three shots ahead of his rivals.

“After my time off, it was the thing I wanted to prove to myself and to everyone, to show what a player I am,” he said.

He followed that up with another win at the Danish Golf Championship, where a dramatic birdie-birdie finish saw him edge out home-favourite Rasmus Højgaard. “I’ve been playing so well this year,” Penge says. “Coming back from my time off, to have won so soon and to achieve what I’ve achieved since I won, it’s amazing.”

2024 Genesis Championship.
Then just a matter of weeks ago, Penge claimed his third DP World Tour victory of the season by beating countryman Dan Brown in a play-off at the Open de España presented by Madrid and earned a place in both The 154th Open and the Masters Tournament next season.

“To play the rest of the season knowing I’m in the Masters, having won the Spanish Open, three wins this year, and playing The Open Championship, I’m just so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and for making the most of them.

“I never would’ve thought that six or seven months ago. But I’ve done it, and now I need to enjoy the celebrations without taking my foot off the pedal. I want to keep going for more. That’s just the person I am, I love playing golf, I love competing, and I love challenging myself.”

These three titles have given Penge the opportunity to compete side-by-side more often with the games best players. “I try to watch how top players handle themselves,” he says. “Some are very meticulous, some are very chilled. You pick up little things here and there. You take the good stuff and apply it to your own game. That’s what helps you grow.”

“Everyone’s slightly different,” he says. “Matt Fitzpatrick is very detailed with his preparation. Then someone like Dustin Johnson, who I played with recently at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is a bit different.

“Some are just very chilled, some are very intense. I feel like I have a bit of both in certain moments.” Those observations, combined with Marco’s own temperament, have helped him steer those high-pressure situations throughout the year.

2025 Danish Golf Championship.
Family has been a grounding force for Penge. His wife Sophie, a professional herself, and their 18-month-old son Enzo, offers him both perspective and motivation when travelling the globe. “Trying to be the best golfer I can be while being the best husband and father is pretty hard,” he admits.
“I’ve learned to manage it in a better way. When I am at tournament weeks with my son, I prioritise time with him in the evening and switch off from golf in those moments.” Watching videos of Enzo laughing before a round, he says, gives him “inner strength.”

Now, with the Race to Dubai entering its final stretch, Penge is focused on the Middle East. Abu Dhabi and Dubai will host the Play-Offs, and he is eager to take advantage of every opportunity to move up the Rankings. “I’m just focusing on myself, trying to keep my year as good as I can,” he says. “I want more wins. I want more top-five finishes. Going up against Rory, I couldn’t ask for more than that. I really want to play with him in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.”

The Middle East has become an important stage for Penge’s ambitions. Playing in the upcoming Rolex Series events at Yas Links and Jumeirah Golf Estates offers him once again another chance to test himself against the world’s best while showcasing his form to a region that has become synonymous with world-class golf. “Playing here is always special,” he says. “The courses, the fans, the atmosphere — it’s different. It’s one of those places where you feel the energy and you want to perform.”

His rise over the past two season has been equal in growing as a player and person as much off the golf course as on it. “I’ve had to go through a lot growing up — moving away from home young, getting married, becoming a dad, having knee surgery, going through Covid,” he reflects.

“It’s all played a part. The things I’ve been through, they’ve made me grow up. I’m an adult now. I need to be professional in every area.”

“I’m still not one to get overawed by the fame,” he says. “I just see myself as a guy who loves his family, friends, and appreciates the opportunities I’ve been given in my life. That’s the most important thing — remaining grounded and humble.”

2025 Open de Espana. Stuart Franklin / Getty Images

“I feel the way I’m playing now and the player I perceive myself to be now, I would say I’m ready to try and win more on the DP World Tour, compete in more Majors, but I’ve still got a lot to learn at the same time,” he reflects.

As the DP World Tour heads to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, he has the chance to cement his place not just as a winner, but as a contender for one of the game’s biggest season-long prizes and become just the 8th Englishman to win Race to Dubai Rankings.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” he says. “The last couple of years have been a roller coaster, but I’ve proven to myself that I can handle pressure, grow from mistakes, and still come out stronger. Now it’s about finishing the year the right way, staying focused, and enjoying every moment. Playing against Rory, in front of these crowds, in the Middle East, is exactly where I want to be.”

McIlroy completed the career grand slam in memorable fashion earlier this month when he added the Green Jacket to his four previous Major victories at the 2011 U.S. Open, the US PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and The Open in 2014.

It was a third win of 2025 for the Northern Irishman, following his victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and THE PLAYERS Championship on the PGA TOUR, and he will return to the Genesis Scottish Open seeking to add to that famous victory two years ago, when he produced a brilliant birdie-birdie finish to edge out home favourite Robert MacIntyre by one stroke.

McIlroy, who made history with his Genesis Scottish Open win as the first player to triumph in the national opens of both Scotland and Ireland as well as The Open, said:

“Winning a national open is always special, and I’m pleased to have the chance to compete for another Genesis Scottish Open title.

“It has certainly been a memorable year so far, and I’m looking forward to carrying on the momentum to the home of golf this summer.”

The Genesis Scottish Open is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR, counting on both the Race to Dubai Rankings and the FedExCup, and boasts Genesis, the luxury automotive brand from South Korea, as title sponsor. Genesis title-sponsors two tournaments on the PGA TOUR’s 2025 schedule, with the Genesis Scottish Open following The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines in February, won by European Ryder Cup star Ludvig Åberg.

The event benefits from the continued commitment of the Scottish Government and VisitScotland, and retains its place in golf’s global calendar the week ahead of The Open as part of these agreements through to 2025.

The 2025 Race to Dubai sees the UAE playing a central role as always, with the Ras Al Khaimah Championship forming part of the International Swing, known as the Middle East swing for the old guard.

The event is number three on their early schedule to be held in the United Arab Emirates, and one of five across the Middle East, promising an exciting start to the new season while offering a chance to see both new faces and familiar ones.

Padraig Harrington. Sam Greenwood

Pádraig Harrington, a three-time Major champion and two-time Senior Major winner, will return to familiar territory in January. The Irishman had a stellar 2024, racking up three victories on the PGA Tour Champions and earning top-10 finishes in two Senior Majors. His form also saw him finish tied for 22nd at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Though he has shifted his focus largely to the PGA Tour Champions circuit since turning 50 a couple of years ago, the 2021 Ryder Cup skipper remains confident in his ability to compete with the best, and age is very much just a number.

RELATED: DP World Tour: 2025 Middle East Swing

Harrington has made the cut in each of his last three appearances at Al Hamra Golf Club, and he’s looking forward to adding another chapter to his Middle Eastern journey at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in 2025.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing in the Middle East, and Al Hamra is one of my favourite courses,” said Harrington.

“The layout suits my game, and I feel like I’ve got a real chance to contend if I bring my best stuff. I’m excited to get back out there and challenge for a win.”

Al Hamra Golf Club

A victory in Ras Al Khaimah would be more than just another title for the 53-year-old—it would make him the oldest winner in DP World Tour history, a record currently held by Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez at the 2014 Open de Espana, when he was aged 50 years and 133 days.

“One of my big goals is to break Miguel’s record and become the oldest winner on the DP World Tour,” he added. “Ras Al Khaimah is definitely a place where I think that could happen.

“The course is in great shape, and the hospitality in the UAE is second to none. We’re always well taken care of, but the welcome we get at Al Hamra is something special.”

Having made its debut on the global stage by hosting three European Challenge Tour events, including the 2018 Challenge Tour Grand Final and the DP World Tour since 2022, Al Hamra Golf Club is ready to host another exciting chapter of the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, with Paddy aiming to make history himself, with a bit of the luck of the Irish of course.

As the 2024 golf season now slips into the rearview mirror, England’s Jordan Smith will perhaps be relieved to see it behind him, having narrowly missed out on a PGA Tour card by just one spot on the final day of the 2024 Race to Dubai season.

The Bathonian is already on a mission to elevate his 2025 season and accomplish one of the game’s most prestigious goals—earning a spot on the squad for Team Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup in September. A goal he is getting an early taste of this month, having been selected for Justin Rose’s GB&I squad in the Team Cup at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort on the DP World Tour.

But while the road to the Ryder Cup is long, Smith’s journey has already been filled with unforgettable moments, especially here in the Middle East. Titles previously at Sokhna Golf Club in Egypt and the iconic Al Hamra Golf Course in Ras Al Khaimah hold a special place in Smith’s heart, with the latter marking the site of his Challenge Tour victory in 2016, when he topped the Order of Merit.

“I always love coming back to the UAE. I have such fond memories here,” says Smith. “It’s perfect for golf with its great weather, top-notch practice facilities, and plenty of courses to choose from.

“It’s just a fantastic place to be, both for work and play.”

RELATED: Tyrrell Hatton among six former Ryder Cup stars confirmed for 2025 Team Cup at Abu Dhabi Golf Club

Another venue where Smith has gained invaluable experience is the National Course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Resort, site of this year’s Team Cup. A familiar layout for the 31-year-old, Smith knows exactly what it takes to perform well here.

“It’s a great course and always plays tough,” Smith explains. “Being long off the tee and hitting a lot of fairways and greens is really important.

“The people who do well here are always the best ball strikers. You need to have everything dialled in—distance, accuracy, and consistency.”

As an amateur, having represented GB&I at the Walker Cup in 2013 and England in the European Amateur Team Championship in 2014, Smith had to wait nearly a decade for his next taste of team golf at the Hero Cup in 2023. He now gets another bite at the cherry with a place in Captain Rose’s GB&I team at this month’s Team Cup in Abu Dhabi.

“It’s an honour to be picked for an event like the Team Cup and represent GB&I. I played in it last time and loved it. We had a great team room—lots of fun personalities, which made it easier to relax and enjoy the experience. But we also wanted to perform our best for each other.”

Team golf provides a welcome contrast to the solitary nature of professional golf. It’s no wonder he’s enjoyed his previous experiences, including the Hero Cup, where he got a taste of what it might be like to be a part of the European Ryder Cup squad.

“I loved the Hero Cup. We may not have won, but we came together as a team, and it gave me a small taste of what the Ryder Cup would be like,” says Smith.

“It really gave me the drive to want to make that team in the future. Being part of something like that would be amazing.”

The 18th hole at Bethpage Black. Gary Kellner

That desire to make the Ryder Cup team is what drives Smith forward in 2025, as he eyes a place at Bethpage Black in 2025. For Smith, making the Ryder Cup team isn’t just another goal—it’s the pinnacle of his career.

“The Ryder Cup is my only goal this year,” Smith states with purpose. “It would be the best achievement of my career, by far. To play on Luke Donald’s team would be an absolute honour.

“I watched the Ryder Cup ‘Una Famiglia’ documentary, and I had goosebumps all over me,” Smith recalls. “Seeing how much it means to the European team—it’s inspiring. You can feel the passion and the history, and it only makes me want to be a part of that much more.”

Jordan Smith. DP World Tour

While he acknowledges the challenges that come with competing in the U.S., especially with the hostile New York crowds, Smith is firm in his goal.

“It’s going to be tough—especially in America—but I’m up for the challenge,” he says. “It’s one of those environments you dream about, and if I make the team, it would be incredible.”

Jordan Smith’s journey from a young talent to being at the game’s top end, in a relatively concise span of time is nothing short of inspiring. His commitment to improving his game is always evident, along with his drive to represent in team golf.

As he prepares for the challenges that 2025 and beyond will bring, one thing is clear: Jordan Smith’s eyes are set firmly on the prize, and the Ryder Cup is the ultimate goal.

The DP World Tour Championship returns to the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates this month — from November 16-19 — and it looks like we are in for a Ryder Cup reunion.

The 15th edition will see the top 50 players in the Race to Dubai Rankings compete at the fifth and final Rolex Series event of the 2023 DP World Tour season.

The Earth Course will once again test the DP World Tour’s finest as we determine who will walk away with the trophy and the winner’s cheque at the $10 million showdown, and also find out who will claim the season-long Race to Dubai crown.

Andrew Redington/Getty Images

Mates, teammates and roommates will have to put the pals’ act to one side after Team Europe’s Ryder Cup heroics in Rome, as this one will be every man for himself.

We will have at least 10 of Team Europe’s stars on show. Defending DP World Tour Champ Jon Rahm and Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy will be back in town for the season finale, while Ryder Cup teammates Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, Nicolai Højgaard, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka and Tommy Fleetwood will all enter the event on a high after they all helped Europe defeat Team USA at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club last month to reclaim the Ryder Cup.

The only absentee is rookie and nailed-on future superstar Ludvig Aberg, who only turned professional a few months ago and therefore does not have enough points to make the top-50 field. The last Team Europe member, veteran Justin Rose, has some work to do in Qatar and South Africa if he is to get into the last event of the DP World Tour season.

McIlroy is looking to join Rahm as the only player to win the DP World Tour Championship three times — the Spaniard is the defending champion and also won in 2017 and 2019, while McIlroy claimed the title in 2012 and 2015 — and the Northern Irishman is the defending Race to Dubai champ.

“Playing at the DP World Tour Championship is always an amazing experience,” McIlroy said. “Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a lot of success in Dubai and at this event in particular. The fans have been great, it’s amazing to have that support out there for us. When you have the top 50 golfers from the DP World Tour, you know it is going to be a fantastic competition. I’ve won here on a couple of occasions, and I would love to be right there come Sunday with both trophies to my name.”

Luke Walker/Getty Images

Rahm added: “It’s no surprise I love coming back to Dubai and to this golf course for the DP World Tour Championship. To win here three times, it means a lot to me, and it’s always an honour to defend any title you have put your name to.

“It’s going to be fantastic week. The vibe in Dubai is great, the field is world-class, and the fans get behind the players, so I am looking forward to the challenge and hopefully, I can give them something to cheer about come Sunday afternoon.”

Tom Phillips, Head of the Middle East for DP World Tour is anticipating a great event. “The 15th edition of the DP World Tour Championship marks a remarkable journey of growth, from its inception to becoming one of the key tournaments in our global calendar.

“The vibrant atmosphere created by passionate fans in Dubai is a testament to the unwavering excitement that surrounds this event, making it a true celebration of golf, as well as being an entertaining day out for all spectators.

“Following Team Europe’s thrilling Ryder Cup victory in Rome, I am delighted Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, Nicolai Højgaard, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka and, of course, Tommy Fleetwood who joins us here, are confirmed for our season-ending tournament. We also have their Ryder Cup teammates Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm — our defending champion — already announced, so we cannot wait to see these world-class golfers all in action.”

Andrew Redington/Getty Images

Fleetwood, who secured the Ryder Cup for Europe when he was guaranteed at least a half-point in his match against Rickie Fowler, added: “Dubai has a special place in my heart, both as my home away from England and the home to one of my academies.

“I’ve played a number of tournaments here at Jumeirah Golf Estates and I look forward to the 15th edition of the DP World Tour Championship in November. The fans have been unbelievable over the years and it has been amazing to witness it grow over time with all the activities available for kids and families, plus some pretty decent golfers.

“It’s an exciting tournament and I can’t wait to have some of my Ryder Cup teammates here as well, it is going to be another special week.”

The tournament will not only showcase the cream of the DP World Tour but also highlight the event’s commitment to a greener, more eco-conscious future. Building on foundations from previous years, this year’s Earth Lounge on the 16th hole will be fully powered by solar panels and hydrogen generators, resulting in a 100 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, while Averda, the event’s official waste management company, will recycle 75 per cent of tournament waste.

DP World Tour Championship’s commitment extends beyond the course, with the continuation of the G4D Tour, further reinforcing the event’s commitment to inclusivity. The G4D Tour Series Finale will be hosted on November 17, showcasing the leading gross-ranked players from the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability.

Andrew Redington/Getty Images

Daniel Van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer of Group Communications at DP World, said: “The 2023 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai is just around the corner, and it’s set to be an exhilarating season finale. This event marks our second year as the Title Partner of the DP World Tour, and what a fantastic two years it’s been.

“We’re excited to welcome the world’s best golfers back to Dubai for what promises to be an incredible conclusion to the season. The tournament holds special significance for DP World, and it’s also a standout on Dubai’s sporting and social calendar. It’s an event that caters to the entire family and gets better year on year. We can’t wait to see everyone at Jumeirah Golf Estates in just a month’s time.”

The DP World Tour Rankings, the DP World Tour’s season-long competition to crown its No. 1 player, will be renamed the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex from the 2023 season onwards.

The Race to Dubai is, of course, a familiar name having previously been the title of the points-based ranking from 2009 until 2021.

It was renamed the DP World Tour Rankings for the 2022 season, when DP World became the title partner of the European Tour group’s main Tour.

Now, with the support of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, it will revert back to the Race to Dubai brand from next season when the leading eight players will share an increased bonus pool of $6million as part of an overall $144.2million prize fund across a minimum of 39 tournaments in 26 countries on the DP World Tour’s 2023 global schedule.

Speaking about the new agreement, Guy Kinnings, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Commercial Officer of the DP World Tour, said: “The Race to Dubai is a strong narrative for us, reflecting our season-long contest which builds towards the final Rolex Series event of the year in Dubai, our DP World Tour Championship, where we crown our No. 1 player. We are therefore pleased to be bringing it back with the support of Rolex and this announcement further cements the long-standing relationship between the DP World Tour and the Emirate of Dubai — a relationship that dates back to the first staging of the Dubai Desert Classic in 1989.

“Our partnership continues to drive significant exposure for Dubai and its leading businesses on a global scale. The 2023 DP World Tour season promises to be one of our most exciting yet, with a record prize fund on offer. We look forward to seeing which player earns the right to be named the Race to Dubai champion at the DP World Tour Championship next November.”

Past Race to Dubai champions include star names such as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Collin Morikawa.

The 2023 Race to Dubai will begin from November 24-27, 2022, with two tournaments — the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and the Joburg Open in South Africa — co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Sunshine Tour respectively.

It will conclude with the $10million DP World Tour Championship which will take place at Jumeirah Golf Estates for the 15th consecutive year from November 16-19, 2023.

By Matt Smith
The DP World Tour heads into the finishing straight in November, with all eyes on the finishing line at Jumeirah Golf Estates (JGE) in Dubai.

The 14th DP World Tour Championship takes place from November 17-20, and promises to be another cracker as the top 50 players in the rankings fight it out on two fronts.

First of all, there is the DPWTC itself, the individual strokeplay event that brings the curtain down on the 2022 DP World Tour season.

Then there is the season-long DP World Tour Rankings race, with the fans guaranteed a treat as two of the tour’s top names are set to fight it out on both fronts.

FedEx Cup champion, two-time DPWTC winner and world No. 1 Rory McIlroy is set to do battle with US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick as both are confirmed for the fifth and final Rolex Series event of the season on the famous JGE Earth Course.

Northern Irishman McIlroy has led the way in the Rankings since July when he finished third at the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. Fitzpatrick, who shot to global fame when he won his maiden major at the US Open in Brookline, is breathing down his neck.

Ras Al Khaimah champ Ryan Fox is hunting his third DP World Tour title of the season. Getty Images

JGE has been a happy hunting ground for both McIlroy and Fitzpatrick, with the world No. 1 having won the Race to Dubai (as it was known then) in 2012, 2014 and 2015, doubling up with the DP World Tour Championship in 2012 and 2015.

For his part, Fitzpatrick claimed the DPWTC in 2016 and 2020 and narrowly missed out on defending his title to Collin Morikawa last time out.

“I’m really excited to return to the DP World Tour Championship, especially with a chance of winning the Harry Vardon Trophy [Rankings] for a fourth time,” McIlroy said. “I have some great memories of playing golf in Dubai, from making my first cut on Tour as an amateur, to winning my first DP World Tour title and then finishing top of the rankings on three occasions.

“To win both the DP World Tour Rankings and the FedEx Cup in the same season would be a great achievement and would cap what has been a memorable year on the golf course.”

Fitzpatrick, 28, has steadily rose to prominence over the past few seasons and won his eighth DP World Tour title at the US Open at the Country Club — the same course where he won the US Amateur nine years earlier, becoming just the second golfer in history after Jack Nicklaus to win both championships at the same venue.

The Englishman has stayed in form since his June triumph at Brookline, and just missed out on winning the Italian Open in September.

“It’s very exciting to go to Dubai with a chance of winning the DP World Tour Rankings,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’ve come very close to finishing top in the past, so I’ll be going to Jumeirah Golf Estates with a lot of confidence knowing that I’ve had some great results on the Earth Course in the past.”

McIlroy has a commanding lead in the Rankings standings, but with 12,000 points on offer in Dubai (2,000 to the DPWTC winner), things can change rapidly, as McIlroy knows all too well as he was overhauled on the final day of the 2021 campaign when Morikawa took both the Rolex Series title and the season-long race crown.

Rory McIlroy is not the only Irish interest in Rankings contention as Shane Lowry also has a chance for glory.
McIlroy can mathematically still be caught by seven other players in the standings and that could possibly increase with the Portugal Masters and Nedbank Golf Challenge still to be played ahead of the season finale in Dubai, and McIlroy expected to skip both events.

Looking ahead to the event, Tom Phillips, Head of the Middle East, DP World Tour, said: “Anticipation is building across the UAE, not just among golf fans but also the general public who are looking forward to enjoying some of the finest premium experiences a golf tournament can offer.

“We’ve had a huge number of fans already register and we expect many more to avail the free general admission tickets in the final weeks leading up to the greatest weekend on Earth at Jumeirah Golf Estates.”

While this pair will certainly draw the crowds, there will be no shortage of other stars — some of whom while be plotting their own move to take one or both of the titles on offer.

Ras Al Khaimah Classic and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winner Ryan Fox has been in consistent form all year and the Kiwi would love to claim his third win of the year in Dubai.

Norwegian Viktor Hovland is no stranger to victory in the UAE and claimed the Dubai Desert Classic crown in January. Mr Consistent Will Zalatoris, Abu Dhabi HSBC champ Thomas Pieters, BMW PGA Championship winner Shane Lowry and Irish Open champion Adrian Meronk could all still reel in McIlroy as it stands.

Whatever happens, everyone who can should get down to Earth.

By Alex Myers
When you graduate from Cal-Berkeley with a degree in business administration, you’re set up to do well earnings-wise in your career. But we’re guessing Collin Morikawa has made just a tad bit more than any of his 2019 classmates thanks to golf.

In just under two-and-a-half years since turning pro, Morikawa has won two majors, five PGA Tour events and the season-long Race to Dubai on the European Tour. Add up all the prize money, including bonuses, from that and you get a staggering total of more than $23 million for the 24-year-old.

But break it down by event, and his (very) early returns are even more amazing. Check out this graphic that shows how much Morikawa has made per tournament, per round and per shot:

Nearly $400K every time he tees it up?! Pretty darn impressive. And, obviously, he’s just getting started.

“I’m going to set the bar as high as I can get and keep going,” Morikawa said after winning the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday. “I’m still not No. 1 in the world. I still have a lot to work on in my game.”

But in the meantime, he still has a lot of prize money to keep track of. Seems like that business administration degree is going to come in handy after all.
