You can’t win them all. So we’ll “excuse” Scottie Scheffler for failing to close out his one-shot lead on Sunday at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He’ll just have to make do with having four wins in his last 10 PGA Tour starts rather than five.

But no one appeared to want to win on Sunday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. With windy conditions blowing in during the afternoon, Scheffler, Harold Varner III, Scott Stallings, Brendon Todd and Davis Riley, all tied for the lead at one point, all faltered down the stretch.

Enter Sam Burns. The 25-year-old Louisiana native had wrapped up his final round nearly two hours ahead of the leaders, and his five-under 65 gave him a clubhouse lead at nine-under. It was good enough to get into a playoff with Scheffler, who posted a two-over 72 but got up-and-down from a bunker for par on the 18th hole. And after making a 38-foot birdie from off the green on the first extra hole, Burns claimed his third win of the 2021-22 season and fourth career win, all in the last 13 months.

With the victory, Burns claimed a first-place prize money payout of $1.512 million from an overall purse of $8.4 million (up from $7.5 million in 2021). Here’s the prize money payouts for each golfer who made the cut at Colonial
