Golf Digest Middle East Oktoberfest is back

Who’s ready for the new golf season? We are, and we are back with our third Golf Digest Middle East Oktoberfest extravaganza at The Els Club Dubai.

Join us on October 20 for a unique golfing experience with tasty treats on and off course to keep you going.

Chiara stays hot on LETAS

Third place at the the Trust Golf Links Series at Ramside Hall Golf Club was enough for Dubai-based teenager Chiara Noja to reclaim top spot in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Order of Merit. The German battled against some nasty weather and is now on 1,494.25 points, ahead of New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori (1,332.75 points), Dutch amateur Lauren Holmey (822.50 points), England’s Gemma Clews (821.75 points), Sweden’s Anna Magnusson (790.88 points), and Australia’s Kristalle Blum (781.75).

Overton wins at Els Club

Els Club hosted its latest round of its Summer Series, an individual bogey format — matchplay against the course. Ian Overton took first prize with a 2-up score for 18 holes. He leads the Summer Order of Merit with 100 points.

Billy Horschel is known as one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour and as we approach the grand finale of the European Tour season, he is perfectly positioned for a serious tilt at the Race to Dubai title. But what makes the reigning BMW PGA Championship winner one of the best ball strikers around?

Billy is constantly working on creating a stable top of the backswing position to produce that efficient ball striking that we see week-in, week-out. He does this by maintaining some flex in his right leg at the top of the backswing which allows him to not only manage the length of the backswing but also create the energy needed to push off that leg in transition and thus generate maximum power. In addition to this, maintaining a short and controlled top of the backswing position is key for Billy. He is always looking to avoid a long, loose and narrow look to his top of backswing position.

Drill to thrill
The trail leg drill is a great way to help you maintain flex in your trail leg. Drop your front leg back and begin by making some backswings, focusing on maintaining the flex in your right knee. This should give you the sensation of a very stable lower body, while also allowing you to maintain a lot of width at the top of the swing. I really like Billy’s golf swing and some of the things he works on with his lower body. Copy this drill and before long, you’ll notice an improvement in your ball striking too.

It wasn’t Munich. It was better. While the world-famous hops appreciation party in the Bavarian capital was cancelled, Golf Digest Middle East’s very own golf-themed Oktoberfest was a roaring success last month.

Just shy of 60 players teed it up in the individual Stableford tournament at The Els Club, Dubai where players where well fed by Baker’s Kitchen and hydrated by African + Eastern.

Barry Simpson, George Clark and Yves Buchard were the stars of the day, winning the division A, B and gross titles respectively. 

Simpson, playing off five, scored 32 points to capture the top division (0 to 12 handicaps) on a back-nine countback. Fifteen-handicapper Clark compiled a thoroughly impressive 37 points to win division B (13-24) while Buchard, off 3.3, signed for a 78 off the stick.

Adidas and iconic footwear brand Birkenstock kicked-in on-course prizes in addition to Baker’s Kitchen and African + Eastern. Here’s a list of the winners for prosperity (and bragging rights!):

The former Team GB alpine skier is the bubbly Fitness Operations Manager at ‘The Country Club’, a stunning new wellness facility just opened at The Els Club, Dubai.

Boasting an urban-chic gym, restaurant and two swimming pools, one with a children’s play area and the other with a swim-up bar operated by The Pangolin, the Country Club is unlike any facility in Middle East golf. It’s a beacon for amateurs young and old serious about improving their game and reducing the risk of injury. And the best bit? Now in Dubai and loving it, Macey is driving a team of TroonFit instructors with the same dedication and passion that led her to some of the world’s highest peaks. Getting The County Club open through COVID-19 delays hasn’t been easy, but Macey says the hard work will be worth it.
