Jon Rahm made a move up the leaderboard on Friday at the Open Championship, but it was a particularly violent move that caught everyone’s attention.

Playing the par-3 15th during the second round at Royal Birkdale, Rahm tomahawked an iron off the tee box in disgust, sending the club bouncing high in the air off the firm turf. Have a look:

Rahm was unable to save par, but he did avoid receiving a penalty. A little while later, NBC Sports’ Smylie Kaufman reported Rahm was approached by a rules official on the 17th tee, where he was informed he was being given an official warning under the Open’s serious misconduct policy—but not being docked any shots.

Rahm responded by birdieing the next two holes. He nearly made it three consecutive birdies to close his round, but missed a five-footer on 18 to settle for 67 as he enters the weekend in the top 10 at four under, four shots behind Lucas Herbert.

Golfers taking their frustration out on their equipment is nothing new—Rahm included—but the potential for it resulting in a steep penalty is. Just last month it was Rahm’s fellow LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann making headlines for receiving a serious misconduct two-stroke penalty during the first round of the U.S. Open for throwing a club on the sixth hole.

Niemann wound up signing for an 11 instead of a 9 on that par 4 before rallying to make the cut at Shinnecock and ultimately finishing T-7. Still, the two strokes wound up costing him about $700,000.

Based on that, many believed Rahm was fortunate to have only received a warning on Friday. However, that warning will stay with him for the rest of the tournament and influence any future disciplinary decisions should they be needed. The next level of punishment would be a two-stroke penalty followed by the player being disqualified.
