Peter Finch, who has 740,000 subscribers on YouTube, shot a one-under par round at Caldy Golf Club, to finish top of the leaderboard alongside Cameron Walker and book his place at Final Qualifying on 1st July.
In a post on Instagram, the YouTuber and broadcaster wrote: “So proud to have made it through Regional Qualifying for @TheOpen.
“This isn’t just a good round of golf — it’s the result of years of hard work and pushing through some mental battles.
“Qualifying has always been a stumbling block. No matter the form, this stage has played on my mind — the pressure, the expectation, the frustration of falling short.
“Today, that changed.
“Shot 71 (-1) on a brutally tough day at @caldygolfclub — the wind was howling, the pins were tucked, and nothing came easy. But I stayed in it mentally and got the job done.
“I’m absolutely delighted… but this isn’t the end.
“This is just the beginning.
“Final Qualifying next … One step away from The Open. Let’s bring it on.”
In total almost 2,000 players entered Regional Qualifying, with former Premier League footballers Jimmy Bullard and Peter Odemwingie among those who were unable to progress on this occasion.
Bullard shot a three-over-par 74 at Rochester & Cobham Park, while Odemwingie posted an 82 at Enville.
By the end yesterday’s mammoth day, 131 spots were awarded for Final Qualifying, which takes place at four venues on the 1st July. Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire.
If players manage to finish in the required positions, they will book themselves a spot at The 153rd Open Championship which, this year, is being held at Royal Portrush on the 17 – 20th July.
