Adam Hadwin had never hit a golf ball in the water on No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass during the Players Championship until Thursday. We’re pretty sure he’d never thrown a golf club into the water on No. 18, either. But, hey, there’s a first time for everything.
The Canadian PGA Tour pro had a wild few minutes during the opening round of the Players after what had been a pretty boring day. Following a birdie on No. 16, Hadwin was at even par for the tournament when he arrived at the course’s diabolical par 3. Only, it hasn’t been diabolical for Hadwin, who arrived with an amazing streak of never having found the water there in 28 previous rounds.
But the 29th time wasn’t the charm as Hadwin’s wedge came up well short and found the water. That prompted his wife, Jessica, to tweet about it. Although, she originally tweeted “street” instead of “streak.”
The streak* has been broken ⛳️💦🥺
Honestly about to pay for a checkmark so I can edit allllll of my grammar and spelling errors

So it was a tough afternoon for one of our favourite golf couples. But it got even tougher moments later.
After Adam narrowly avoided the water on No. 18 with his tee shot, he played a daring—and ill-fated—approach shot. And then flung his club in after his golf ball. Have a look:

Pretty good toss. Shooter McGavin was impressed.

And, of course, Jess commented as well:
I have seen the moment in question. If I’m going simply on the aesthetic of the toss….10/10

After the double bogey-bogey finish, Hadwin, who has top-15 finishes in this event the past two years, signed for a disappointing three-over-par 75. On the bright side, it was Hadwin’s last hole of the day so he didn’t have to play down a club. And, hey, he can always start a new streak on Friday.
