Moms always know what’s best. Always. And this is just another example of that.

After his mother signed him up for a contest, Trevor Frey found himself on the court of Carver Arena with just one putt separating him from a new car—despite knowing very little about the sport. That didn’t stop him from taking this swing and well … watch what happens.

Yup, that’s a 94-foot putt for a brand-new Mazda CX-50 and Frey sunk it to one hell of a reaction from the Bradley Braves faithful. The 19-year-old civil engineering freshman and Illinois native will now have a new ride around Peoria, and just look at this immediate reaction from the cheerleaders holding up the sign and the fans right behind the board.

“I never golfed in my life,” Frey told the Peoria Journal Star. “My mom (Sarah) entered me in this contest, said, ‘Hey, you might win a car, go for it.’ I don’t have a car. So I figured I’d give it a try.

“The people around me down at the baseline told me not to think about the shot. I looked at it after I hit it, and it looked right on, going straight. I just knew it was going in all the way.”

Luckily, Peoria golf legend Rick LeHew happened to be sitting nearby and gave some last-second advice to Frey before the shot. “It breaks left,” advised the seven-time USGA National qualifier and longtime Senior Director of Field Services at the Chicago District Golf Association.

And break left it did, immediately prompting a good bit of chaos and celebration featuring Bradley mascot Kaboom! What a regular-season finale for Carver Arena.

Sure, Bradley beat Northern Iowa by 17 points in this early-March bout, but the shot to remember was this putt from Trevor Frey. A new car will go a long way for a college freshman and it’s all thanks to his mom looking out for him. No surprise there.
