All’s well that ends well for Haeran Ryu, who defeated Brooke Henderson with a birdie on the first playoff hole to win the Amundi Evian Championship in France and claim a second straight major title.
But Sunday’s final round was a challenge at Evian Resort Golf Club, as Ryu, 22, didn’t make a birdie until the final hole, closing with an even-par 71 a day after shooting Haeran Ryu follow up her historic 11-under 60.
That left the door open for Brooke Henderson, who shot a second straight 64—including an eagle-ace combo on the front nine and an eagle on the 18th—to rally from seven back and force the playoff.
Ryu lamented that she couldn’t find the hole with her putter all day, but did it when she had to on the 18th hole, making an 18-footer to finish with a 19-under 265 total. It also forced Henderson to hole her eight-foot eagle putt, her sixth on the week (the most since the LPGA started tracking the record in 1992).
But in the playoff, Henderson pulled her tee shot, forcing her to lay up with her second shot on the short par 5. Ryu, after finding the fairway, hit her second safely on the green about 45 feet from the hole. Henderson pulled her approach, and her chip didn’t fall, allowing Ryu to two-putt for the victory.
With the win, Ryu claimed $1.4 million from a prize money payout of $9.1 million.
