You never know what you’re going to see on the golf course. Lions, tigers and a man being tossed into a lake by a former NHL player, oh my! This has taught us to expect the unexpected while hitting the links, but no matter how prepared you are, you never expect to see a plane falling out of the sky.

That’s what golfers at Sidney’s Mona Vale Golf Club witnessed on Sunday when a Piper Cherokee was forced to make an emergency landing, slamming into the ground and sliding to a stop next to an adjacent green. Watch the terrifying scene below.

Nearby golfers rushed to the aid of the aircraft’s passengers, but thankfully only minor injuries were reported and both occupants were treated at the scene. According to the Australian Transportation Safety Bureau, the plane was piloted by a student and instructor and had taken off from Camden Airport, about 82 miles south of Sidney, an hour before the crash. A sudden power loss was reportedly the cause.

“A nice big shadow came over the top,” golfer Keanu Turnewitsch told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “I thought, ‘It’s a big bird’ and looked up and there was an airplane close enough I could have thrown a club up and hit it.”

Certainly something you don’t see every day, but it’s probably best to add it to the list of things you need to watch out for on the golf course anyway. Errant shots, poisonous snakes and now falling planes. The world is a dangerous place, even for us golfers.
