If you only listened to snippets of Viktor Hovland’s Sunday press conference, you never would have guessed he hoisted the trophy at the Valspar Championship. Hovland said he didn’t have his “best stuff,” he “hit a lot of disgusting shots,” and that he “wasn’t hopeful” entering the week. And if you saw Hovland play recently, you’d understand why.
The 27-year-old was in a 19-month winless drought and coming off three consecutive missed cuts. That included missing the weekend at the Players last week, where Hovland shot an eye-poppig 80. Yeah, the dude was struggling. Until he wasn’t. Suddenly.
Hovland did a great job of explaining all this in that presser after earning his seventh career PGA Tour title, but he summed it up even better on Instagram after. And he only needed three words to do it.
“Stupid, stupid game.”
No arguments here, Viktor. You nailed it.
But . . . it’s also the best game. Even when you don’t have your best stuff.
