To have a tee time for Saturday’s third round of the 2025 Open Championship means you successfully navigated the opening two rounds at Royal Portrush. Sounds simple, but that’s quite the accomplishment considering how long and gruelling those two rounds tend to be—first shot off at 6:35 a.m. local time, final group off the 18th green just before 10 p.m.
But now we’re down to the final 70 players, the low 70 and ties advancing to the weekend. And with that, it starts to get truly interesting as players hope to emerge from the pack on the leaderboard and pull their best Shane Lowry impersonation—the Irishman, you might recall, shot a Saturday 63 to race out to a five-shot lead before eventually winning by six when the Open was last held at Portrush in 2019.
Scottie Scheffler did something along those lines on Friday, shooting a 64 to pass Matt Fitzpatrick and take a one-shot lead after 36 holes. It’s the fourth time that Scheffler has the halfway lead in a major, having won the 2022 and 2024 Masters from that spot and finishing T-2 at the 2023 PGA Championship, falling to Brooks Koepka.
Saturday’s tee times have just been released (see below). They look to be about 15 to 20 minutes earlier compared to the R&A’s original plan for a 8 p.m. local time sign off on Saturday. That’s because an annual parade organised by the Sons of Ulster is scheduled to begin in Portrush at a little after 8 p.m. local time. To avoid having spectators get caught in the parade traffic, the R&A adjusted times. (For background on the parade, our Shane Ryan has an explainer right here.)
