Saudi Arabia is entering golf in 2026 with a unique focus on growing the sport from the roots up. The Kingdom has set an ambitious goal: to expand the number of registered golfers from 5,000 to 46,000 by 2030.

Achieving this requires more than just hosting high-profile tournaments—you have to invest in infrastructure, grassroots programs, and opportunities for new Saudi nationals to learn, compete, and stay engaged with the game. And the Kingdom is very much doing that.

Mark Runnacles / LET

Golf Saudi’s efforts are to integrate the sport into local communities, schools, and youth programs across the country.

Central to participation growth is their “Go Golf” program. The initiative offers 12 free lessons for any Saudi national, introducing beginners to the fundamentals of the game in a structured, supportive environment. Participants will then earn a digital golf passport upon completing the lessons, providing discounts on equipment, memberships, green fees, and even restaurants—all designed to encourage long-term engagement.

Infrastructure growth is just as important. Currently, Saudi Arabia has seven publicly accessible golf courses, but Golf Saudi plans to increase that number to more than 20 within the next five years. Driving ranges will be introduced across all 13 regions, and multi-purpose, Topgolf-style venues are planned for Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Province. In addition, the partnership with Five Iron Golf will bring cutting-edge indoor golf facilities to Riyadh starting in early 2026, blending simulation technology, hospitality, and instruction to attract beginners, families, and casual players.

Golf Saudi

For example, courses like the new Wadi Safar Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, combine world-class infrastructure with sustainable operations. These types of venues will serve both professional competitions and community programs, offering golfers a place to learn and grow while also positioning Saudi Arabia as a global golf destination.

High-profile tournaments also play a role in inspiring participation. Events in the past 12 months include LIV Golf Riyadh, the PIF Saudi Ladies International, and the Saudi Open presented by PIF all showcase elite talent while giving Saudis a chance to experience world-class golf firsthand. Attendance figures highlight the growing interest that there is in the Kingdom. More than 72,000 people registered for the 2025 Saudi International, a dramatic increase from just 8,000 the previous year across the four tournament days.

Golf Saudi

The tournaments staged by Golf Saudi are integrated with weighty initiatives like Riyadh Season and entertainment events, combining sport with tourism, hospitality, and business. Showing that golf is a driving economic growth, thanks to partnerships with entities such as the Public Investment Fund and Riyadh Season.

Golf Saudi has focused a vast amount of its time on creating pathways for local talent. Programs for juniors, women, and emerging professionals provide coaching, competitive opportunities, and mentorship from Golf Saudi ambassadors, including both global stars and Saudi Arabian professionals like Othman Almulla, Saud Al Sharif, Faisal Salhab, Khalid Attieh, and Shergo Al Kurdi. This combination of elite access and grassroots development ensures that the sport is inclusive and that talent can be on display at every level.

The Kingdom’s development efforts are also complemented by regional initiatives. The Arab Golf Federation (AGF) launched the Arab Golf Series (AGS), a unified schedule of tournaments across 17 member nations, complete with an official ranking system for amateur and professional players.

Five Iron Golf

This now provides a clear pathway for emerging Arab golfing talent, enabling them to measure themselves against the best in the region and gain international exposure. By participating in AGS events, local players can track progress, earn ranking points, and qualify for higher-level competitions, creating a structured ecosystem that bridges grassroots development and elite performance across the Arab world.

Looking into the crystal ball for 2026, the Kingdom’s strategy is to further nurture and grow the sport through infrastructure, community programs, elite competition, and national initiatives like Go Golf. The combination of world-class venues, strategic partnerships, and structured development programs is designed to ensure that golf is not only played but embraced as part of Saudi Arabia’s cultural and sporting fabric.

Shura Links, the first island golf course in Saudi Arabia, located on Shura Island in the Red Sea, has officially opened for play.

Designed by acclaimed architect Brian Curley and managed by Golf Saudi, the pioneering project reflects the Kingdom’s robust investment in golf and its growing reputation as a global destination for the game.

18th Green and Clubhouse at Shura Links

“Shura Links offers 18 unique and visually stunning holes in a beautiful island environment that will redefine golf in the region,” Curley said. “Our goal was to create a course that is both strategic and forgiving, where golfers can enjoy the ground game, and be inspired by the seaside setting.”

Stitched through native mangroves and bright-white dunes, with long stretches that hug the Red Sea shoreline, Shura Links was conceived to blend seamlessly into its unique surroundings with a layout that welcomes all levels of play. A par 72, it measures 7,400 yards from its championship tees, with the option to extend beyond 7,700 yards. But the flexibility of its design—replete with wide playing corridors, fast, rolling conditions, and open approaches that invite varied angles of attack and ground-game options in windy conditions—makes for a fair and compelling test for elite and everyday golfers alike.

Shura Links 5th hole

Greens are large and richly contoured, with backstops, bowls, feeder slopes and run-offs that are meant to strike a balance between shot-making challenge and user-friendly playability. While the gentle terrain allows for easy walking, the firm surfaces are also well-suited for carts.

Bold bunkering is another of the layout’s defining features, at once strategic and visually striking. Many of the sandy areas are hard-packed expanses that allow for relatively easy recovery, while the formal bunkering has transitional outer edges with irregular lines, in keeping with the naturalistic design theme. Irregular turf lines mirror that aesthetic, too.

Additional Highlights

Signature holes include dune-framed par-3s (Nos. 6 and 15) that play directly toward the Red Sea and a dramatic, driveable par-4 (No. 16) for late-round risk-reward.

Two-acre, family-friendly putting course, adjacent to the clubhouse and suited to all ages and abilities

Expansive grass practice range, putting green and short-game area.

Two returning nines, with green-fee options for 9 or 18-holes

Professional golf instruction for individuals, families and groups, led by onsite PGA-qualified teachers.

A stunning modernist clubhouse, designed by Foster + Partners, with curated golf retail and dining options both casual and refined on an indoor terrace or by the pool.

Shura Links Clubhouse

Built with sustainability at its core, Shura Links has just 70 acres of irrigated turf, all of it Platinum TE Paspalum, a drought-and salt-tolerant grass with superior appearance, playability and maintenance benefits across all surfaces. The Toro irrigation system is designed for maximum water efficiency, while the landscaping— also by Curley-Wagner Design—integrates desert flora, palms, and flowering trees across sweeping white sand expanses. The significant construction effort was handled in-house by Red Sea Global’s Richard Haas, contributing substantially to the overall design-build process.

The design philosophy emphasises playability without extreme punishment, creating a visually alluring, accessible course.

“Too many desert courses penalise golfers with lost balls in thick vegetation of non-turf areas,” Curley said. “Here, the course is framed by brilliant white sand and open expanses punctuated with bursts of natural dunes vegetation that inspire creativity while keeping the game moving.”

Located just 30 minutes from Red Sea International Airport via a 3.5-kilometre causeway, Shura Links anchors a destination that will feature 11 luxury hotels, including Four Seasons, Raffles, Rosewood and Jumeirah, all of which will open in the coming month. Villas and resort architecture have been woven into the dune landscape, creating a luxurious island-beach environment in a climate where year-round temperatures average 90 degrees.

“Having designed 20 courses for the massive Mission Hills Golf Club in China, I am certainly no stranger to bold and imaginative projects,” Curley said. “The effort here by Red Sea Global is groundbreaking and monumental and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”

Shura Links has been skillfully designed to host both resort guests and professional tournaments, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s growing role on the global golf stage.

“Shura Links sets a new benchmark for the game of golf in the region,” said John Pagano, Group CEO of Red Sea Global. “It’s more than just a course – it’s a place to connect, challenge yourself and experience the full beauty of The Red Sea. This is another proud milestone in our mission to reshape global tourism through sustainability and design, and a significant step in building Red Sea Global’s diverse sports portfolio, aligning perfectly with Vision 2030’s goal of establishing Saudi Arabia as a premier global sporting destination.”

The new identity represents a unifying step forward for golf in Saudi Arabia, reflecting the Federation’s ambition to unite and elevate the sport under a cohesive, modern brand that will resonate with players, fans, and partners.

At the heart of the rebrand is a bold new logo designed to reflect strength, unity, and ambition — anchoring SGF’s vision for the future of golf in Saudi Arabia. It serves as a powerful emblem of national golfing pride and the growing stature of the sport in the Kingdom.

The rebranding initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at expanding participation in the sport and inspiring the next generation of Saudi golfers to achieve excellence in regional and global competitions. It also underscores SGF’s role as the central body connecting Saudi Arabia’s golf ecosystem, helping to create a shared purpose and drive progress for all organisations involved in growing the sport — from grassroots to elite levels.

In recent weeks, the Saudi national golf team — including women and junior players — participated in an intensive training camp as part of SGF’s commitment to nurturing local talent and preparing athletes for upcoming championships. The camp focused on enhancing technical skills, improving physical fitness, and elevating performance through specialised sessions led by top international golf experts.

His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Chairman of the Saudi Golf Federation, stated:

“At this important stage, we believe that our future success depends on having a clear and structured plan that enables us to accelerate the development of golf in the Kingdom. With our new visual identity, we are entering a new phase guided by a unified vision built on three main pillars: establishing a strong base for participation, organising and steering the golf ecosystem, and developing national platforms. These pillars reflect our ambition to empower the game of golf within the Kingdom and help us build a dynamic system that nurtures the sport from its roots — ultimately leading to the creation of future national champions.”

Noah Alireza, Executive Manager of the Saudi Golf Federation, added:

“Building on the clear and ambitious direction, the refreshed Saudi Golf Federation strategy views golf as a sport as well as an economic value chain driven by collaboration across all sectors. We aim to activate this through clear frameworks and initiatives that reinforce every element of the golfing ecosystem. Our refreshed identity embodies a clear direction and a commitment to execute on the strategy with excellence, inclusion, and long-term sustainability – not just to shape world-class golf landscape, but to cultivate a thriving community, inspire future generations, and position Saudi Arabia as a premier global destination for golf. This is a pivotal moment for golf in Saudi Arabia, and we are honoured and privileged to be playing a part in shaping its future”.

The new brand identity includes a complete digital transformation, featuring updates across SGF’s official website, social media platforms, and promotional materials.

The Saudi Golf Federation remains dedicated to expanding the sport’s reach, elevating competitive standards, and supporting both emerging and professional players. These efforts align with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the Kingdom’s sports sector and achieve international success across various disciplines.

Mr. Abdullah bin Nasser Aldawood, Managing Director of Qiddiya Investment Company, said: “Qiddiya City’s partnership with Sir Nick Faldo in designing a new golf course and becoming global partner of the Faldo Series underscores our commitment to growing the game of golf and nurturing the next generation of Saudi golfers.”

Sir Nick Faldo, commenting on the partnership added: “This is a unique opportunity to become involved in one of the most exciting cities being developed today where a new way of city life is fused together with sport, entertainment and culture. Our partnership with Qiddiya City brings together the golf community with a whole nation bubbling with energy to be active and try new sports.”

The new flagship golf course is set within a dramatic landscape, nestled against the towering 200-meter cliffs of the Tuwaiq Mountains. Designed to maximise both playability, the course features floodlighting for extended hours and is thoughtfully crafted to challenge professionals while remaining accessible to amateur players. It will also offer tailored learning pathways for newcomers and those looking to elevate their game, combining traditional golf elements with innovative golf entertainment experiences.

The course will be complemented by an iconic clubhouse and state-of-the art driving range and academy designed by Patterson’s which sits perfectly in the desert environment. It has both sustainability and world-class golfing features embedded within the design.

The clubhouse will offer a comprehensive range of facilities to support the golf course while also serving as a vibrant community social and wellness hub. It will feature leisure amenities such as fitness and conditioning, wellness facilities, social meeting places, indoor and outdoor pools, and a variety of food and beverage options. The venue is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors annually.

A green-roofed structure, open to the public for viewing and events, will connect three main zones: the Golf Clubhouse, serving as the central hub for operations and player interaction; the Social Wellness Hub, offering a wide array of sports and leisure amenities; and the Academy, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to golf instruction and practice.

The new golf course, clubhouse and academy are located in a vibrant area of Qiddiya City, one of the world’s largest city developments at 360 sq km and located just 40 minutes from Riyadh. With over 20 districts planned, the new city will be well-connected and anchored around entertainment, sports and culture with world-class facilities and events alongside new homes, offices, retail and hospitality.

The new golfing attractions add to an impressive list of entertainment, sports and cultural facilities at Qiddiya City such as the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium which will host major sports and cultural events including the 2034 World Cup; the Speed Park Track for motor sports; the Mercedes AMG World of Performance which is an immersive and interactive experience including a public race track and the Performing Arts Center.

The Arab Golf Federation has officially launched the Elite Sports Scholarship Camp, one of its most strategic and pioneering initiatives aimed at preparing a new generation of Arab golf champions.

This initiative is designed to empower young Arab golfers and open pathways for them to reach the highest levels of international competition by the year 2035.

The Elite Camp marks the first phase of the Federation’s scholarship program and is focused on assessing and selecting top Arab talent under the age of 18. Selected players will be given the opportunity to pursue elite-level training in collaboration with IMG Academy.

Held over four days at Riyadh Golf Club, the camp features 16 male and female participants under 18 years old from various Arab countries, carefully chosen based on their performance in regional and international tournaments and rankings.

The Elite Camp is structured in two key phases:

Phase one (Days one and two) includes theoretical and practical evaluation sessions. Players undergo technical tests, physical and mental assessments, and one-on-one interviews with a specialised evaluation team to gain a comprehensive understanding of each participant’s potential.

Phase two (Days three and four) simulates competitive conditions, where players participate in two full 18-hole rounds under tournament-like pressure. This phase enables the selection committee to assess performance under stress and identify candidates for the academic scholarship program.

At the conclusion of the camp, the top-performing players will receive full scholarships to join IMG Academy starting in August 2025. The program includes professional golf training, academic and educational support, and access to advanced sports science services such as strength and conditioning and mental coaching.

MORE: Morocco’s Adam Bresnu named as a 2025 Jack Nicklaus Award recipient

This initiative is part of the Federation’s broader multi-level approach, combining several impactful programs – with the Elite Sports Scholarship Camp being a key pillar. The Arab Golf Federation remains committed to talent development, fostering regional collaboration, and building a sustainable support system for long-term growth.

This effort signals a new era for golf in the region, grounded in performance, opportunity, and a shared vision for success.

Statement by H.E. Mr. Yasir bin Othman Al-Rumayyan, the President of the Arab Golf Federation: “The launch of the Elite Sports Scholarship program marks a key strategic step within our parallel path to building a fully competitive golf ecosystem in the Arab world.

“While we continue to lay a strong and sustainable foundation locally, we are also committed to partnering with the best international institutions to provide world-class training and professional development for our promising young players. This initiative reflects our dedication to investing in youth talent based on global best practices, empowering them to compete on the international stage.

“In the coming years, as we achieve our ambitious goals, we will be able to rely entirely on our local capabilities and deliver a comprehensive Arab system for developing future champions.”

Noah Alireza the Secretary-General of the Arab Golf Federation highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: “This camp represents a turning point in our journey to establish a clear competitive pathway for Arab golfers. By combining world-class training, international exposure, and meticulous evaluation, we are laying a strong foundation for young Arab talents to rise to the top levels of the sport.”

He added: “The Elite Sports Scholarship Camp is a genuine launchpad toward realising the Arab Golf Federation’s vision of producing a new generation of Arab champions capable of competing globally.

“Through comprehensive assessment programs and strategic partnerships with leading institutions, the Federation is laying the groundwork for a promising future for golf in the Arab world, built on planning, professionalism, and investment in youth potential.”

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is investing $100 million into luxury golf resorts as it partners with Canadian tech entrepreneur and BlackBerry co-founder Jim Balsillie.

The planned development of golf across the Kingdom will initially comprise seven to ten courses, with long-term ambitions of up to 100. It forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broad transformation under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 strategy.

Balsillie, who owns Canada’s largest golf course operator, GolfNorth, told the Financial Times that his first course will break ground this year in Wadi Aslaa, near Jeddah.

Where To Play: Royal Greens Golf & Country Club

The resorts, co-developed with Sumou Global Investment, will include hotels and residential communities aimed at upper-middle-class buyers and international tourists.

“Our type of development is in line with the Kingdom’s push for more tourism and more residential accommodations — golf ties it all together,” Balsillie said.

A distinctive feature of the plan is its appeal to Muslim pilgrims visiting Mecca. “Come for history, natural beauty, and legendary hospitality. Stay for golf and modern lifestyle,” he added.

His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan

The sport has grown since His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan — head of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Chairman of the Board of the Saudi Golf Federation, and Chairman of Golf Saudi Company — took over the Saudi Golf Federation in 2017. The PIF has invested $3.9 billion into LIV Golf and commissioned new courses, including one by Jack Nicklaus near Riyadh.

Balsillie acknowledged the competitive landscape in neighbouring Arab countries, citing the UAE and Oman’s established golf tourism. “The question is why wasn’t this type of project done, say 10 or 20 years ago when Oman and UAE were doing the same thing?”

While Balsillie confirmed that the project does not currently receive government funding or tax incentives, he suggested that support “might change down the road.”

Saudi’s newest pro reflects on his humble beginnings, the rise of Arab golf, and what it means to represent the Kingdom on tour.

When Khaled Attieh talks about his journey into professional golf, you can sense the gratitude — and a little bit of disbelief. The Saudi Arabian golfer, who turned pro just over six months ago, is still adjusting to the idea that the dream he’s chased since childhood is now a full-time career.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said the 30-year-old. “But honestly, I think the timing was right. It feels good to finally take that step. I’ve had a few solid finishes, played in some great events… and now I just want to keep that momentum going and keep working on my game.”

Khaled Attieh – Octavio Passos

Attieh’s story isn’t your typical golf fairytale. He didn’t grow up with manicured fairways or private coaches. Instead, his introduction to the game came on a sand course in Jeddah, where he learned to play with a mat in his bag and a rake for the ‘browns’.

“It was called Jeddah Golf Club, near the airport. Just sand everywhere,” he laughs. “I’d hit shots off a mat, and the ball would run like 380 yards on the hard surface. Then you’d rake the green before you putt. It was wild — but it’s where it all started.”

His father was the one who brought him into the game, thanks to a South African friend who introduced them both to golf in Jeddah. At first, young Khaled was just tagging along for the buggy rides. But slowly, he started swinging a club — and getting the bug!

His game took a big leap when he moved to neighbouring Dubai for high school. With access to grass courses and better facilities, Attieh’s potential started to show. Later, he headed to the US to attend the University of Southern California, playing college golf and competing with some of the top amateur golfers in the world.

“College golf was huge for my development,” he says. “You’re out there playing against the best, week in, week out. That experience really set me up for the professional side.”

Khaled Attieh – Octavio Passos

With a glittering amateur career, Attieh’s ascent in the golfing world has been driven by significant milestones. In March 2024, he clinched the Senior Individual title at the GCC Golf Championship in Doha, denying the host nation’s Saleh Al Kaabi a hat-trick of victories.

Plus, earlier last year, he made history by becoming the first Saudi amateur to make the cut in a professional tournament during the Asian Tour’s International Series Oman. So, when the time finally came to turn pro, was it intimidating?

“There’s always pressure,” he admitted. “Whether you were a top amateur or you’re just starting out, that pressure’s real. But the way I see it, you just keep your head down, stay committed, and learn from every event. There’s no shortcut.”

Now competing on global tours across the Asian Tour, DP World Tour and HotelPlanner Tour, Attieh is starting to feel more at home among his fellow pros — many of whom he competed against during those memorable amateur days.

“It’s cool seeing familiar faces out there. You realise, okay, we’ve all been on this journey together in some way. Now we’re just doing it for a living.”

But none of these opportunities, he says, would be possible without the support of Golf Saudi.

“They’ve been incredible,” he says. “Their support means the world. It’s not just about funding — it’s the belief, the opportunities, the infrastructure they’re building. And it’s not just in Saudi. Through LIV Golf, the LET’s Aramco Team Series, and other events, they’re making a real global impact. Without the support of Golf Saudi and my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Khaled Attieh – Octavio Passos

Golf in the Arab world, particularly in Saudi Arabia, is on the rise — and Attieh is proud to be part of it.

“It’s grown so much in just the last few years,” he says. “We’re seeing more young players, better facilities, more events. I think they’ve looked at what’s worked in places like Dubai and said, ‘Let’s do that — and more.’ And it’s working.”

Right now, there are five Saudi professionals competing internationally — Othman Almulla, Saud Al-Sharif, Faisal Salhab, Shergo Kurdi and Khaled — and they’ve built a real brotherhood.

“We’re all good friends,” says Attieh. “We travel together, compete, push each other. It’s a great environment. Everyone wants to improve and represent Saudi in the best way.

“I’d love to be a mentor — if not now, then in the future,” he says. “I’m still early in my pro journey, but if I can help inspire or guide the next wave of Arab golfers, that’d be a real honour.”

Just one of a host of Arab golfers proudly carrying the Arab flag around the globe, Attieh is always aware of what it means to represent something bigger than himself.

“A few years ago, you didn’t see many Arab professionals out there,” he says. “Now, it’s starting to change — but it’s still rare.

“So, to be one of the few, and to share our culture and our story with the world… it’s something I don’t take lightly.”

For Khaled, the dream is no longer distant — it’s happening, one tournament at a time.
