Sergio Garcia, one of the most successful European golfers of his generation, is set to rejoin the DP World Tour for the 2025 season in a bid to return to competing in the Ryder Cup.

The 44-year-old Spaniard, who holds the record for the most points in Ryder Cup history, is determined to make his 11th appearance in the biennial event — in an attempt to match the European record held by Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo.

Since Garcia left the DP World Tour to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, it has had major implications, including hefty fines and a suspension from the DP World Tour. Now, as he aims to make the European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Garcia has had to settle fines reportedly exceeding £1 million and serving a suspension imposed as part of his LIV Golf move.

To be eligible for Ryder Cup selection, European players must be members of the DP World Tour.

A spokesman for the DP World Tour confirmed to bunkered, that the former Masters champion has applied for re-admission before the 17 November deadline.

“He has paid his fines but will have to serve his suspension before he can play on the DP World Tour,” the spokesman stated.

With Luke Donald, the European team captain, once again at the helm for the European’s, he has stated his hope that Garcia would be part of his squad, with the pair having already held discussions about his potential return.

“He thinks he can play,” Donald said. “He wants to play. I don’t think he has talked to me about being an assistant captain, but again, he would have to re-join the tour for him to be eligible.

“He’s certainly very interested in doing that. He understands everything that’s involved and again, the decision has to go to him whether he’s prepared to do all that. But certainly, we’ve had that discussion.”
