Well, the robots aren’t quite taking over yet. Professionals in many injuries might be scared about the way that artificial intelligence will change their jobs, but fortunately as a golf journalist, this won’t be the piece that will bury sportswriters.
We got a strange email on Masters Eve: As pundits and golf fans were busy discussing storylines and all the possibilities that lie ahead before the 89th Masters gets underway, someone decided to ask ChatGPT who the best-looking golfers in the field were? We have a lot of questions, but OK. And kudos to SportsCasting, because before today we had never heard of them—and now we couldn’t help but open an email from them with the subject line: AI named five most attractive golfers at the Masters. Guilty, we were intrigued, as were you, obviously, because you clicked our article.
All that’s left to do is hand the ball off to the software and let them run with this. Here’s their ranking of the 10 most attractive players in the field, and we’ve listed the top five below along with the AI software’s reasoning behind the choices.
1. Rory McIlroy
The AI was very complimentary of McIlroy’s style, calling his Nike wardrobe “polished” and “blend[ing] modern sophistication with a sporty edge.” Additionally, Rory scored a 9/10 for his “confidence and charisma.”
2. Jordan Speith
Scored at 8.5/10, Speith was credited with a “youthful look” and “sharp fashion.” AI said his polos fit perfectly, reflecting professionalism, while his “easy smile” makes him approachable.
3. Tom Kim
At 8/10, Kim is credited with an “excellent fashion sense,” a “cheerful smile,” and a “lovely personality.” Enthusiasm and personality seems to be the name of the game, folks.
4. Sam Burns
A Louisiana native, Burns’ wardrobe mixes “classic golf attire and modern touches, often in dark, sophisticated hues.” His height also contributes to his 7.5/10, says ChatGPT, as does his “down-to-earth personality.”
5. Scottie Scheffler
The world No. 1 ranking certainly helps Scheffler score a 7/10, as does his “calm, approachable demeanor.” Humility seems to carry a lot of weight in ChatGPT’s opinion, which explains that his “cool, collected nature” is complemented by whatever Nike outfit he’s donning.
OK, now’s our turn to pick it back up. We were absolutely shocked that Adam Scott was not on this list. Ask any golfer, and Scott would be a unanimous choice for best-looking dude on the PGA Tour. Call it how it is.
With Ludvig Aberg’s ascent among the ranks of the PGA Tour, he also caught quite a bit of attention—particularly with the non-avid crowd who were watching TGL on ESPN and watching Aberg for the first time.
We’re not here to judge anyone’s tastes (although really, we’re judging a robot’s taste, so we’re still here for it), but Sam Burns? The Louisiana native is a very talented golfer, but objectively, his fashion choices never really pop, and he’s not really attention-grabbing in any way.
The fact that Burns made this list over Scott or Aberg? OK, most of us will be keeping our jobs for the time being.
