Every day leading up to this week’s U.S. Open brings us new details about Oakmont’s brutal setup. At this point, we’re a news cycle or two away from discovering that the vaunted course is hiring a handful of golf fanatics to reflect light into unsuspecting golfers’ faces. There’s the much-talked-about brutal rough, soggy weather with mud balls on the way and even one hole with “five bunkers made into one,” because why not?

We’re still at the practice stage, and players are losing their minds about one hole in particular—a particularly cruel par 3 that may force a pro or seven to bust out the driver. The almost 300-yard No. 8 is one of the longest par 3s in the world and is already annoying some of the best golfers out there.

Yup, that’s two-time major winner Collin Morikawa going with a driver in order to reach the behemoth, which is playing 303 yards to the back edge.

“Am I the only one hitting driver?” Morikawa sheepishly asks. “I mean, this just seems ridiculous,” to which Xander Schauffele retorts, “It’s the perfect club. You don’t look very comfortable.”

Schauffele went on to say in a press conference, “If you can peel a par away from it, you just figure out how best to make a score on it. I think you might hurt a few egos if you see guys pulling driver or some long clubs in there, but at the end of the day, however you feel you’re going to make the best score in there is how you should play it.”

To be fair, the 28-year-old Morikawa is far from the only golfer to need a driver to get over the bunkers, as evidenced by the following DP World Tour clip.

“Hit driver into par 3 8th,” Michael Kim added. “No one in my group ever thought about 3wd. It was decently into the wind today.”

Oakmont’s very own website states that a “par is an excellent score here” and notes that “In the 1973 U.S. Open, this was the only blemish on Johnny Miller’s scorecard. He three-putted for bogey on his way to a course record 63.” Even the best score in the course’s illustrious major history was no match for this monstrous par-3.

Despite being No. 8 in driving distance on tour, Min Woo Lee is another competitor this week needing a driver on this hole. The Aussie tour winner even commented on how bizarre this all feels.

“Hey @USGA, someone put a 3 instead of a 4,” he posted, with an accompanying video as proof. “Driver Pin High 😂”
