FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Brooks Koepka didn’t come back to the field on Saturday despite his worst of the week even par 70, but he didn’t put them all away either. Yet he still leads by seven heading into Sunday at the 101st PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson tried to close the gap and failed, carding a one-under 69 despite making six birdies. He put the pressure on early with a front-nine 32, but bogeys at 10, 11, 14 and 18 spoiled what should have been a great round on moving day for the No. 1 player in the world. DJ better enjoy being referred to as “the No. 1 player in the world” for now, because it doesn’t feel like it’s lasting much longer, and if Koepka continues his dominance, he could stay on top for a long time.

Those who did make a decent move were too far back for it to actually register. Harold Varner III and Jazz Janewattananond fired the low rounds of the day, three-under 67s, but they are tied with Johnson at five under overall. Luke List is also at five under following his one-under 69, which, like Johnson’s round, could have been much lower if not for a few late bogeys. Between List, Varner and Janewattananond, the highest finish in a major is a T-33 from List at the 2005 Masters, which came when he was an amateur. Barring an unconscious 10-under 60 from one of those three tomorrow, it’s safe to say they won’t be the ones to scare Koepka with such little high-pressure Sunday experiences in majors.

So for those looking for some excitement on Sunday, Johnson may be your only hope, and he’ll need help from Koepka, whose “worst” round came on Saturday and didn’t change his lead in the slightest. Good luck, DJ.
