Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the 2023 Players Championship.

The No. 1 player in the world was announced as a late withdrawal ahead of his second-round tee time on Friday at TPC Sawgrass. The PGA Tour announced that Rahm dropped out due to an unspecified stomach illness.

Rahm was part of the super-pairing with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Rahm turned in an uneven performance on Thursday but still managed to post a one-under 71.

Rahm had entered TPC Sawgrass on a heater, winning three times and finishing T7 or better in six of seven starts this season. He is ranked first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained/total and scoring. A victory this week would have given Rahm the most wins this early in a tour year since Jack Burke Jr in 1952.

It is unlikely that Rahm will play in next week’s Valspar Championship. Rahm’s next scheduled appearance will come at the WGC-Dell Match Play in two weeks.
