Charley Hull wasn’t feeling her best before the third round of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. Being sick and throwing up didn’t stop her from getting in a run before the third round, nor did it keep her from putting herself into contention to win on the LPGA Tour.
Hull scored a four-under 68 and is in second place, one shot behind leader Lydia Ko heading into the final round on Saturday night (U.S. time) at Sentosa Golf Club.
“I woke up this morning and I actually was sick. I threw up, and then I kind of got my head together,” Hull said. “Then I actually did my personal best in my 5K run in 26 minutes, knocked another minute off. I was pretty happy about that. [It was] 30 seconds off, actually. That kept me in a good space for the rest of the day. Just went out on the golf course and played golf.”
With the field playing in oppressive heat—temps in the high 80s and humidity at 85 percent—Hull was alone atop the leaderboard during the back nine of her round, but a 68 from Ko had the recently qualified LPGA Hall of Famer atop the leaderboard after 54 holes.
Hull’s love of weight lifting and running is well documented, something she details on social media. But this was quite a performance, even for her.
Asked if she was sick from something she’d eaten, Hull said it was “just a little bit of a bug. I’m fine.”
Hull began the week by saying that she slept 12 hours on her flight to Singapore, got off the plane and did an 11K run. Then she slept overnight and did a 10K run the next day. Her goal by the end of the year is to run a 5K in 20 minutes.
After opening the tournament with a 69 to be in second, Hull said she has to run early in the day to feel comfortable once she reaches the course. “I’m miserable all day if I don’t train in the morning,” she said. “I actually find that I swell more on the golf course if I don’t run. I said to my caddie yesterday morning I didn’t train before I played and I was really swollen out there, and today I wasn’t. Gets my heart pumping and makes me feel loose and like I’m one step ahead of everyone.”
Hull, a two-time LPGA winner and currently ranked ninth in the world, was looking forward to being paired with 22-time champion Ko for the final round.
“Yeah, I like playing with Lydia, she’s a really, really nice person, so down-to-earth, so kind,” Hull said. “Just go out there, have a little chops and just play golf.”
