One of the best things about The Open Championship is that whether you are a professional or an amateur, you can play your way into undoubtedly the greatest men’s major, by just carding together 36 holes of decent golf, (or 54 holes if you start at Regional Qualifying).

Fifteen courses around Great Britain and Ireland played host yesterday to almost 2,000 Regional Qualifying hopefuls, with as many as seven places up for grabs to play in this year’s 152nd Open taking place at Royal Troon from 14-21 July.

Successfully making it through Regional Qualifying and into Final Qualifying you had the familiar faces of DP World Tour’s Robert Rock, who qualified for the US Open at Pinehurst last month, 6ft 9 inch Jonathan “Jigger” Thomson and South Africa’s Justin Harding who were amongst a host of other lucky professionals and amateurs to make the grade (see below).

Eyes were also on a host of YouTubers, including Peter Finch and Rick Shiels, who were all having a go at making it to Royal Troon, after basing a chunk of their online content covering their journey or quest on making it to The Open.

It’s fair to say, the day had mixed results…

“YouTubers” Results:
Peter Finch – Hesketh Golf Club – 12 over par
Rick Shiels – Caldy – 9 over par
Andy Carter – Hesketh Golf Club – 1 over par
James Robinson – Hesketh Golf Club – 7 over par

Final Qualifying will be staged at four venues across England and Scotland on Tuesday 2nd July – West Lancashire, Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Burnham & Berrow in Somerset and Royal Cinque Ports in Kent.
