The LPGA returned to Mexico for the first time since 2017, playing at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. Mexican star Lorena Ochoa, a hostess, retired 15 years ago, and was the best player in the world at one point for 158 consecutive weeks. She said earlier in the week that she thrilled to see there were eight Mexican players in the field competing for $2.5 million.
“I was fortunate enough to meet her at a young age. We had a good relationship since I was like 10 or 11,” said Mexico’s Maria Fassi. “It was cool being able to pick up the phone and ask her a question. I hope that she knows that she’s the reason why the eight of us are here”.
Fassi was the only Mexican player to make the cut, however, finishing tied for 56th place. Gaby Lopez, at 58th, was the highest ranked Mexican player at Mayakoba. She missed the cut.
At the top of the leaderboard was Chisato Iwai, a 22-year-old Japanese rookie star, who won her first LPGA event. She captured $375,000 for the victory, shooting 68-74-68-66 for a 12-under-par total, good for a six-shot victory over Jenny Bae. Iwai’s twin sister, Akie Iwai, has finished twice this season—JM Eagle LA Championship, Honda LPGA Thailand—and is ranked No. 23 in the world. Chisato was ranked 45th prior to this week.
Up next is the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills, followed by two more events before the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco.
