LIV Golf took a month off, with the PGA Championship in the middle, and was back this week in Virginia to start the second half of its 14-event schedule. So, yes, this is the eighth tournament of the year.
The usual LIV roster was at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, the same place that hosted the Solheim Cup last fall and previously hosted four Presidents Cup competitons. It was Joaquin Niemann who won to walk away with the $4 million first-place prize from the overall $20 million purse. He shot a final-round 63 to top Graeme McDowell and Anirban Lahiri by a shot. Thomas Pieters, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson all tied for fourth place another shot behind.
Niemann already was the leader of LIV Golf’s individual standings after winning three previous times before this week, so his fourth victory has simply only extended his lead over Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. DeChambeau’s Crushers team—with Paul Casey, Charloes Howell III and Lahiri—won the team title and will split another $3 million.
The league is off next week for the U.S. Open at Oakmont, where DeChambeau defends his title from last year at Pinehurst. The next event is in Dallas June 27-29 before they head to Europe for July.
