Winning on the PGA Tour isn’t always easy—or pretty—as Harris English can now attest. En route to his victory Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Open, the 35-year-old veteran shot a final-round one-over 73—finishing with 12 straight pars—at Torrey Pines South to close out at eight under for the week. But it was still good enough to pull out a one-shot triumph over a hard-charging Sam Stevens (who shot a closing 68) and win his fifth career tour title.
“It’s never easy out here,” English said. “I haven’t slept on a lead in a long time, I can’t remember when. But I felt like I did a good job.”
This was actually the fourth time English had been in the lead entering the final 18 holes in a PGA Tour event, the last coming at the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Championship. And this is now the second time he’s been able to close out a title while holding that 54-hole lead, the other coming at the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions.
With the win, English claimed the first-place prize money payout of $1.674 million from the overall purse of $9.3 million.
