Another champion was crowned Sunday on the PGA Tour, a week after Scottie Scheffler put the finishing touches on his second major victory of the year at Royal Portrush in the British Open. This time, Akshay Bhatia and Thorbjorn Olesen shared the lead heading into the final round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. But both played horribly and Kurt Kitayama birdied five of his first six holes to jump out to the lead and hold on to win his second PGA Tour title.
The 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational winner earned $1.512 million from the $8.4 million purse.
Kitayama only made the cut by two shots but shot 60 on Saturday. He followed it with a 65 on Sunday to shoot 23-under-par 261 total and top Sam Stevens by one. Matt Wallace, David Lipsky, Pierceson Coody and Jake Knapp tied for third place. Olesen shot 73 and tied for 14th place. Bhatia shot 75 and tied for 20th place.
Kitayama moved from 110th to 57th in FedEx Cup standings, which guarantees him a spot in the playoffs. Stevens moved from 44th to 27th.
Next week is the Wyndham Championship, which marks the end of the PGA Tour’s regular season.
