Happy New Year to Chris Kirk. The PGA Tour veteran never shot worse than 67 for four days in Hawaii and walked off with his sixth victory and $3.6 million in the first of eight signature events on the schedule this year.

Kirk shot 67-65-66-65 for a 29-under-par 263 total to top Sahith Theegala by a shot. Jordan Spieth was another shot behind and in solo third place after shooting a Sunday 65. The tournament was in flux until the end. But Spieth made bogey on the 16th hole to send him too far back and when Theegala failed to birdie the par-5 closing hole, Kirk was holding a one-shot lead at the time—after making birdie on 17—and played conservatively on 18, made par and took home the win.

Theegala collected $2.16 million for the runner-up finish from the $20-million purse. Spieth earned $1.36 million.

“It’s unreal,” Kirk said. “It’s just so unexpected. I had a really great off-season and I got a lot of good work done and felt good about the year, but you never really expect to go shoot 29 under.”

The PGA Tour remains in Hawaii but heads to Honolulu for the second event of the season, the Sony Open.
