It’s tradition at many golf clubs for the new captain to take office by hitting a drive off the first tee at their golf club.

Back in the olden days, a club captain used to be the club’s best player, usually having earned the position by winning the annual club championship.

As times have changed over the years, the role now requires much more than just being good at golf. A captain needs to be a real people person, a club administrator, and an after-dinner speaker — it’s pretty much a full-time job.

It’s safe to say you might get a skipper who isn’t the most talented golfer, especially when it comes to the pressure of the drive-in, with club members all huddled around the first tee to watch you (hopefully) stripe one down the fairway. Think Ryder Cup vibes!

So you might be forgiven if nerves get the better of you.

Before we show you our best (worst) one, who could forget this one at Chislehurst Golf Club in Kent, England last year?

Perfectly captioned by @Donolphin31: “Just because you are the new captain of the club doesn’t mean you are the best player — especially under pressure.”

Despite that one being dangerously bad, I think, for comedy value, we have a new contender…

History was being made at Brynhill Golf Club in Barry, Wales, as the club’s first-ever female Club Captain, Lisa Taylor, had the honour of stepping up to the plate.

This was her Captain’s Drive…
