Charley Hull’s bid to claim her first career major title at this week’s Amundi Evian Championship was cut short in a scary turn of events during Thursday’s opening round that ultimately led to her withdrawing from the tournament.
Hull, 29, teed off on the 10th tee at Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France, in a pairing with Ruoning Yin and Haeran Ryu. After making the turn with a one under score, Hull was seen sitting down beside a bunker near the third green. According to reports, she proceeded to go to the fourth tee only to collapse.
Golf Channel reported that after a 15-minute medical break, Hull hit her tee shot but collapsed again. Photos from the course showed Hull on the ground and then being taken off the golf course via a stretcher on a golf cart.

According to reports from the Golf Channel, Hull is suffering from a virus. The LPGA Tour’s statement on X did not include any further details: “Charley Hull has withdrawn from the first round of the @EvianChamp due to illness.”
The Times of London reported that after receiving medical attention on the course, Hull was sitting up and talking. The paper quoted her as saying, “I was playing pretty well, but I feel faint,” she said. It also reported that Hull said she was struggling with her eyesight.

Ranked No. 19 in the world, Hull finished T-12 in the last two majors, the U.S. Women’s Open and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in May and June, respectively. She has won two LPGA tournaments in her career, but not yet a major championship. She has finished in the top six in each of the five women’s majors.
At the beginning of the season in February, Hull struggled with some sickness at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. Before the third round, she said she threw up. But then went for a personal-record setting 5k run and finished the tournament T-4.
