Marco Penge, a three-time DP World Tour winner and PGA Tour rookie, has announced on social media that he’ll have to drop out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to health issues.

After a missed cut at the PGA Championship, the 28-year-old Brit announced that he would step away from golf for the time being to focus on chronic health problems, most notably a sinus infection and vertigo symptoms that required an MRI. He hasn’t played on tour since that statement.

These struggles started after a viral infection at the DP World Tour Championship last November, and Penge added a bit more about what he’s been going through over the last month, after announcing his WD.

“Unfortunately, myself and my team have decided that I am going to have to WD from the US Open championship, which I’m gutted about,” Penge wrote. “My health is the no.1 priority for now, and until I get to the bottom of the issues, I won’t be competing. The plan is to return fully fit.

“I have had numerous scans and seen several specialists, and we are getting close to resolving the issue that I’ve been struggling with for 8 months. I appreciate the continued support as always, and I’ll be back soon!”

A few fellow pros have already sent well wishes on Instagram, from Ludvig Aberg to Alex Fitzpatrick to Richard Mansell. Penge was hoping to be back in time for his first U.S. Open, but he has decided to focus on his health first and foremost. He did tee off in his first Masters earlier this year, making the cut and finishing T-49.

Penge has had a strong season thus far, despite the up-and-down health. He’s had three top-25 finishes, most notably a T-4 finish at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Golf and Spa Resort. His last event was the aforementioned PGA Championship, a little less than a month ago.

Chase Kyes just completed his freshman season at Tennessee where he helped the Vols to a seventh-place tie last week at the NCAA Championship.

On Monday he was in Ball Ground, Ga., hoping to battle through 36 holes of U.S. Open qualifying at Hawks Ridge Golf Club, something that he said he realised was unlikely. But there he was late, after a lengthy weather delay pushed the final few holes up against darkness. The Alabama native birdied the 36th and final hole to sneak to 11-under total and grab the last of the five spots offered at the Georgia site. Kyes shot 67-66.

He’ll be heading to Shinnecock Hills next week to play in his first major championship.

"We could still get 30 more minutes out of today."

Unfazed by the dark, Chase Kyes (a) shot 67-66 to make his first @USOpenGolf, and he gave a fantastic interview after with @RyanLavnerGC pic.twitter.com/pzdCycPjFM

But … in this interview on Golf Channel, where you can clearly see his laid-back vibe, you’ll notice one funny detail, among others. Kyes wasn’t aware that the U.S. Open was coming up so soon.

“I didn’t know it was next week,” he said, without a hint of jest. “I don’t even know man.”

Well, Chase, you do now. And you better get cranking on accommodations and travel arrangements because, as you just found out, the biggest tournament of your life is only a few days away.

Much of the golf world, at least those not watching the remnants of LIV Golf on an event-by-event basis, might believe that Bryson DeChambeau is having a down year. At the Masters and PGA Championship earlier this spring, DeChambeau looked lost and frustrated en route to a pair of missed cuts. However, those performances clanged against his 2026 LIV results, where DeChambeau has won twice and fired a final-round 65 in Korea that very nearly resulted in a third. Now approaching the year’s penultimate major—one that DeChambeau has won twice previously—it’s fair to wonder which Bryson will show up.

This weekend at LIV Golf Andalucia, where DeChambeau finished T-11, Flushing It Golf spoke to the Crushers G.C. captain about the current state of his game and how he can avoid a third straight major missed cut at Shinnecock. As always, the human headline magnet delivered some fascinating insight. Check it out.

Bryson DeChambeau’s next event after LIV Golf Andalucia is the US Open, where he’ll attempt to win his 3rd gold medal. He spoke to Flushing It Golf at Valderrama about his preparation ahead of Shinnecock Hills and whether he feels any pressure after missing the last 2 cuts in… https://t.co/qjCrfjNdbj pic.twitter.com/mf8tCo6RZ4

If you’re the “I ain’t reading all that” type, here are the highlights.

+ DeChambeau doesn’t believe his missed cuts are systemic: “I might miss all four of them in majors this year. That’s just golf.”

+ Despite countless errant shots, especially off the tee, at Aronimink, DeChambeau likes where his swing is at. “I’m working on my golf swing really hard. I feel like it’s in a really solid place. It’s very close to some of my best golf ever.”

+ LIV Golf’s switch to 72 holes is paying dividends for him: “I feel like I’m actually playing the most consistent I’ve ever played on LIV, which is great. And I think it’s attributed to the switch to four rounds. No question.”

+ He’s not skimping on course reconnaissance. With no LIV event on the schedule until after the British Open, DeChambeau told Flushing It he’s headed to Shinnecock early to put in “extended work.” He also revealed that he hasn’t played the fabled Long Island links since the 2018 U.S. Open.

One thing we know for certain is when DeChambeau tees it up at Shinnecock next week, there will be fireworks. Whether they’re celebratory explosions or distress flares, we’ll just have to wait and see.

In the aftermath of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, after his hopes of winning a second career major championship drowned on a waterlogged course arguably unfit for the finish of a national championship, Adam Scott received a text message from USGA officials.

“I think they were just checking my temperature that I wasn’t steaming,” Scott recalled. “I didn’t reply.”

Which probably said plenty about how the amiable Australian veteran felt about the conditions in the final round last June when the USGA opted to splash on at Oakmont after another deluge of rain caused a 90-minute suspension and left the storied course on the edge of unplayable. It also undoubtedly was an indication that USGA officials knew deep down they erred in finishing even as rain continued to fall.

Scott said Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club that he wished he would have insisted on halting play or consulted with playing partner Sam Burns and simply put their collective feet down and stopped rather than continue in the sloppy conditions. Scott was in the day’s final pairing with Burns, who was one stroke in front of Scott and eventual winner J.J. Spaun.

“I feel in the moment I was like, ‘I’m not going to be the guy complaining.’ But looking back on it, of course, I think I should have,” Scott, 45, said after opening with an even-par 72 in the Memorial Tournament. “Maybe not complain but spoken up after my shot at 11.”

With his club hydroplaning through casual water, Scott hit a wedge that flew 170 yards, landing over the green, and he went on to make a double bogey. He struggled to a nine-over 79 and ended up tied for 12th at six-over 286, seven strokes behind Spaun, the only player to finish under par at 279. Only one player shot a higher score than Scott, who was seven over par for his remaining 11 holes after the weather delay.

Burns, meanwhile, shot 78 and tied for seventh at four-over 284. He played the last 11 holes in six over par. Playing a few groups ahead, Spaun closed with a 72 that included a remarkable 45-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win by two over Robert MacIntyre.

In the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews, Brooks Koepka refused to continue as he watched his ball on the 11th green moving amid winds gusting to 40 miles per hour. Eventually, after Koepka argued with a rules official for five minutes, play was suspended.

Winner of the 2013 Masters, Scott will be competing in two weeks at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, N.Y., for his 100th consecutive start in a major championship, joining Jack Nicklaus as the only players to appear in at least 100 majors in a row.

“It wasn’t great,” Scott said of how challenging the difficult Oakmont layout, one of the most challenging in the U.S. Open rotation, became after the already soaked course near Pittsburgh sustained another deluge. “Obviously, it was great for J.J. in the end, but everybody else probably feels like it wasn’t a great finish.

“I was trying to think in my head, there’s no one else dealing with this? There’s a ton of other groups on the course. Is everyone OK? I mean, I was kind of thinking someone might speak up, but I wish it was me now looking back on it. Yeah. I mean, Sam did and didn’t get him very far, actually.”

A former LIV golfer left in the middle of a playoff at a U.S. Open final qualifier on Monday.

The unusual situation happened at Dallas Athletic Club during a six-way playoff for the ninth and final spot available in the field next month at Shinnecock Hills. But after current LIV golfer Caleb Surratt birdied the first extra hole, there were still two alternate spots to play for.

That’s when Eugenio Chacarra decided to leave the premises, forfeiting his chance of getting into the U.S. Open. Monday Q Info’s Ryan French originally reported the bizarre scene.

According to a few people. Very odd scenario in the 6 for 1 playoff.

On the first hole Caleb Surratt made birdie to win. The other five players made par and moved on to play for 1st and 2nd alt. Both VERY important at this site.

And Eugenio Chacarra just left. Not sure what…

— Monday Q Info (@acaseofthegolf1) May 19, 2026

But on Chacarra, who now plays on the DP World Tour after three years on LIV, responded to explain why he left. And it makes more sense.

I left because my goal it’s to get my pga tour card through the Dp tour and for me to prepare Belgium the right way was to get that flight.
When you fly to Europe you lose one day and that’s was the only chance I had to get there on time to get some rest and practice the course

— Eugenio Chacarra (@Eugeniochacarra) May 19, 2026

As you can see, he had a flight to Belgium that he wanted to make in order to get there in time to prepare properly for this week’s DP World Tour event, the Soudal Open. And that his bigger focus is earning his PGA Tour card by being in the top 10 of that circuit.

Chacarra also explained that he chose the Dallas site instead of Walton Heath in England because he lives in Tulsa, doesn’t prefer links golf, and qualified for the 2024 U.S. Open in Dallas. So, again, his abrupt departure makes more sense, but it was still a strange sight.

Chandler Phillips and Henrik Norlander earned the first- and second-alternate spots in Dallas, while Peter Uihlein was medalist, one shot ahead of Tom Kim.

Chacarra is currently No. 18 on the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai ranking, but several players above him already have PGA Tour status for next year. Recent Truist Championship winner Kristoffer Reitan is an example of one such player who used that category to come to the PGA Tour.

For those who have not recently checked on Tom Kim’s career trajectory, doing so would be a bit of a shock. At 23, he seems like he’s been around forever. He has three PGA Tour wins, 12 victories total on various tours around the world, and has twice been an International team agitator against the U.S. in the Presidents Cup.

Kim also has fallen off the competitive map for the better part of the last three years—which is why he found himself in his current hometown of Dallas on Monday trying to qualify for his fifth U.S. Open. Since the start of the 2024 season, the South Korean has notched only four top-10 finishes in his past 61 starts and his last wins came in back-to-back victories in Las Vegas in 2022-23. Kim’s best chance at a more recent victory came when he lost a playoff to Scottie Scheffler in the ’24 Travelers Championship.

It’s been a bad run that has dropped Kim to 141st in the Official World Golf Ranking, a plunge from being as high as 11th. That kind of position doesn’t get one qualified into any majors, and Kim felt that sting by already missing this year’s Masters and PGA Championship, snapping a string of 15 consecutive majors played.

Duly motivated and coming off his best finish of the season—a T-6 in the opposite-field Myrtle Beach Classic—Kim played well in a strong field of professionals on Monday at Dallas Athletic Club. He opened with a 66 and backed that with an afternoon 68 to finish eight-under 134, one shot behind medalist Peter Uihlein (67-66).

The top nine players scorers advanced out of Dallas to play next month at Shinnecock Hills, and another who earned his spot was the winner of the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Like Kim, he’s been mostly off the radar because he’s been playing on LIV Golf. With his exemption from that victory expired and McDowell not having a U.S. Open start since 2020, the 46-year-old Northern Irishman reached the championship again by shooting four-under 138 in Dallas to tie for fifth.

Baylor alum Dossey Cooper finished alone in third, followed by UCLA product Manav Shah. Three players were tied with McDowell—Jimmy Stanger, TK Kim and Adrien Dumont de Chassart.

A six-way tie for the ninth and final position required a playoff, and it was Tennessee product and LIV golfer Caleb Surratt who prevailed. Among those eliminated was longtime PGA Tour player Kevin Streelman.

Among other notable players who did not advance out of Dallas: Sergio Garcia, Eric Cole, Joel Dahmen, Nick Dunlap, Charley Hoffman and Harold Varner III.

The Dallas final qualifier, as well as one at Walton Heath in England, kicked off the schedule of 13 events that will fill out the U.S. Open field. Japan hosts a qualifier on May 25 and then comes “Golf’s Longest Day,” on June 8, when 11 qualifiers are played around the U.S. and Canada.

In England, home countryman and DP World Tour player Nathan Kimsey—ranked 241st the world—medaled by topping his opening 68 with a 62. The top seven players qualified, and Frenchman Ugo Coussaud earned the final spot in a four-man playoff that included LIV Golf’s Thomas Detry. No one who advanced out of the English event is ranked in the top 200 in the world.

Adam Scott, who will make his 100th straight major appearance, and three-time major champion Jordan Spieth were among the 35 additional golfers who have reached next month’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock, as announced on Monday by the USGA.

The cutoff for the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking ended on Sunday with the conclusion of the PGA Championship, with 24 players earning their place via that route, and the winner at Aronimink, Aaron Rai, was also among those who reached the field who hadn’t otherwise done so. The current U.S. Open field now stands at 86.

Scott, who is 49th in the OWGR, will join only Jack Nicklaus in making his 100th straight start in a major. The Australian began his streak at the 2001 Open Championship, and the 2013 Masters champion has played in every U.S. Open since 2002.

Spieth, who began the season outside the qualifying bubble at No. 80, has three top-20 finishes in signature events this season and tied for 11th in the Masters to move up to No. 47.

Also qualifying is former LIV Golfer Patrick Reed, who at No. 21 was the highest-ranked player in the OWGR who had not previously been exempt. Reed finished fourth in the last time the U.S. Open was played at Shinnecock in 2018.

Kristoffer Reitan, the recent winner of the signature Truist Championship, will make his U.S. Open debut after jumping 48 spots in the OWGR. Alex Smalley moved up 36 spots to No. 42 after his T-2 finish at the PGA Championship and will make his second U.S. Open start, and first since 2017 at Erin Hills.

The other players who earned full exemptions through the current OWGR are: Nicolai Hojgaard, Kurt Kitayama, Min Woo Lee, Ryan Gerard, Rickie Fowler, Jake Knapp, Jason Day, Marco Penge, Daniel Berger, Michael Kim, Matt McCarty, Nicolas Echavarria, Samuel Stevens, Ryan Fox, Michael Brennan, Pierceson Coody, David Puig and Ryo Hisatsune.

Ten other players earned exemptions based on their performances in four additional categories. The top five players in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings are Alex Fitzpatrick, Sahith Theegala, Sudarshan Yellamaraju, Patrick Rodgers and Matthias Schmid. The top two players from the final 2025 DP World Tour Race to Dubai Rankings, who were not otherwise exempt, are Laurie Canter and Adrien Saddier. Jayden Schaper is the highest ranked player on the current Race to Dubai Rankings who was not otherwise exempt.

Joaquin Niemann is the top player who is not otherwise exempt and finished the top three of the 2025 LIV Golf League individual standings. Lucas Herbert is the top player who is not otherwise exempt and in the top three of the current LIV Golf League individual standings.

Just when you think we’ve debated and #shrinked and #expanded and #eradicated and #nuked it all on Golf Twitter, another niche topic comes along to remind us that we’ll never stop finding things to be mad about. This Wednesday’s discussion of choice – is it OK for a golf creator to film every shot of his U.S. Open Local Qualifier?

That’s the talk surrounding a man who goes by “youngdalt” on Instagram, real name Dalton Joyce. Joyce, who has over 54,000 followers on Instagram, teed it up this past Monday in a local qualifier for our national open at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. The amateur shot a 10-over 82, missing out on advancing to the Final Qualifying stage by 13 shots. He took it well, even joking on his Instagram page that “one guy beat me by 20 shots.”

His very next post was a shot-by-shot video of his worst hole of the round, a quadruple-bogey 8 on the 380-yard par-4 sixth on the Nicklaus Course. On one hand, you have to respect it. Social media is full of low-to-mid handicappers who only post their best swings, shots and holes. Showing the bad ones is relatable and humbling. People can get behind that.

On the other hand, this is a U.S. Open Local Qualifier, not some throwaway game up in Rochester. X/Twitter user @FlatironFlusher had some thoughts …

Golf "creators" are ruining competitive golf. It's one thing to film yourself shooting 82, it's another to invite your cameraman ONTO the green, DURING PLAY.

It’s intrusive, disrespectful, and a distraction your playing partners didn’t agree to.

Embarrassing behavior. pic.twitter.com/TkB0hoDkqD

— Flatiron Flusher (@FlatironFlusher) April 29, 2026

Some interesting, albeit aggressive, thoughts, that is. No one asked for my opinion, but it does seem a bit crazy that we’ve reached a point where creators have a cameraman out there filming them shoot 82 in what’s supposed to be a serious qualifier. That’s not to say Joyce isn’t taking it very seriously, but we could be entering “slippery slope” territory. Next thing you know you’ll see a YouTube video titled “I ate one donut per hole and shot 93 in a U.S. Open Local Qualifier.”

FlatironFlusher was not alone, either:

It’s a US Open qualifier. Dude should be escorted back to the parking lot for doing this https://t.co/1NdfQejQ6b

— Steve Schale (@steveschale) April 29, 2026

This shouldn’t be allowed.

I’ve seen more US Open qualifier videos this year than any year before.

It’s becoming a rite of passage for every social media influencer with a handicap and a pulse. https://t.co/xFcNDqpf0a

— Tour Swings Tommy (@TourSwingsTommy) April 29, 2026

As Tour Swings Tommy astutely points out here, this is only becoming more and more prevalent. Would be surprised if the USGA continues to allow it, and if they do, it’ll get out of hand sooner rather than later.

Inverness Club will host a fifth U.S. Open, the USGA announced on Saturday, with the club slated to host the 2045 U.S. Open—66 years after its last national championship. It will be 52 years since Inverness’ last major championship, the 1993 PGA Championship won by Paul Azinger.

The historic Ohio club has a long tournament history, having hosted the 1979, 1957, 1930 and 1921 U.S. Opens, the 1993 and 1986 PGA Championships, the 2021 Solheim Cup, the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1973 U.S. Amateur, the 2003 and 2011 U.S. Senior Open and the 2009 and 1944 NCAA Championships.

Inverness Club will look much different than the last men’s major it hosted—as Andrew Green performed a complete restoration of the course in 2018, returning the course to its Donald Ross roots. The work followed changes to the course before the 1979 U.S. Open made by George and Tom Fazio that eliminated four original Ross holes from the layout in an attempt to make the course play more difficult.

The club remains one of just 21 courses in the U.S. to have been ranked on every edition of Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses. It’s currently 62nd on our list.

The club was also awarded the 2033 U.S. Girls’ Junior and the 2036 U.S. Women’s Amateur. Inverness had already been named host of the 2027 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2029 U.S. Amateur.

Here are some comments from our Golf Digest course-ranking panellists on Inverness Club:

“Inverness charms you at the first tee with the blended fairway, practice putting green with the tee boxes, and the memorials to past golf legends.”

“There were some excellent holes, including the 12th — the only par 3 remaining that was designed by Ross; the 10th, a shortish par 4 with an outstanding green setting, the 7th, a difficult bunkerless hole, and the 18th a devilish, short par 4.”

“The short par-4 18th hole was a great example of how bunker placement can challenge players off the tee box. One of the toughest courses in the country to get home.”

“A great test of golf. Use of elevation to run out fairways makes club selection very important. Very much a shot-maker’s course, but extremely playable and fair.”

“Aside from the slight variations in trap locations and pin placements design variety (and memorability) lacks. Every hole started to feel the same, with a drive to the end of a plateau, followed by a drop in elevation to the creek that is crossed on nearly every hole and rise back up to the green.”

Following an incident at the U.S. Open, Wyndham Clark has been suspended from Oakmont.

The club notified its members this week in a letter, referencing Clark’s damage to the locker room during the week of the national championship, which went viral on social media after a picture was taken of the damage. Golf Digest has obtained a copy of the letter, which reads as follows from club president John Lynch:

“Several of you have inquired about the situation involving Wyndham Clark and the steps being taken in response to his recent behaviour. Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property.

“This decision will remain in effect unless formally reconsidered and approved by the Board.

“Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board’s choosing, and the successful completion of counselling and/or anger management sessions.

“Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

Clark, who won the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023, apologised the following week at the Travelers Championship. He spoke again of the incident last week at the Genesis Scottish Open.

“Yeah, I mean, I made a mistake in a moment of rage with, you know, a bad year and everything coming together and it just was more than anything a good wake-up call for me to say, ‘Hey, you know what, let’s get back on track and things aren’t that bad,’” Clark said. “I live a great life and I’m not that far off from playing good golf, so I feel like I’ve turned a page and we’re now maybe on the right track of playing some good golf.”

Clark also had an incident at the 2025 PGA Championship, where a thrown club resulted in a damaged tee sign. Oakmont, which has been named an anchor site for the USGA as part of the organisation’s new strategy to create a rota for their flagship events, is set to host the U.S. Open again in 2033.
