Chase Kyes just completed his freshman season at Tennessee where he helped the Vols to a seventh-place tie last week at the NCAA Championship.

On Monday he was in Ball Ground, Ga., hoping to battle through 36 holes of U.S. Open qualifying at Hawks Ridge Golf Club, something that he said he realised was unlikely. But there he was late, after a lengthy weather delay pushed the final few holes up against darkness. The Alabama native birdied the 36th and final hole to sneak to 11-under total and grab the last of the five spots offered at the Georgia site. Kyes shot 67-66.

He’ll be heading to Shinnecock Hills next week to play in his first major championship.

But … in this interview on Golf Channel, where you can clearly see his laid-back vibe, you’ll notice one funny detail, among others. Kyes wasn’t aware that the U.S. Open was coming up so soon.

“I didn’t know it was next week,” he said, without a hint of jest. “I don’t even know man.”

Well, Chase, you do now. And you better get cranking on accommodations and travel arrangements because, as you just found out, the biggest tournament of your life is only a few days away.
