This week marks the PGA Tour’s second event of the season, but first full-field tournament at it remains in Hawaii for the Sony Open. Taking the flight from Maui to Honolulu was Hideki Matsuyama, the record-setting victor from The Sentry last week at Kapalua. The 32-year-old from Japan shot an eye-popping 35-under-par total for four days. Matsuyama won the 2022 Sony Open in a playoff.
Now he leads the field of 144 players who are competing for $8.7 million with the winner taking home $1.566 million. Other top-20 ranked players competing are Keegan Bradley (12), Sahith Theegala (13), Robert MacIntyre (14), Billy Horschel (15) and Russell Henley (17).
Amateur Luke Clanton earned a sponsor exemption this week after playing in eight PGA Tour events in 2024, collected four top-10 finishes, including a T-2 at the John Deere Classic and the RSM Classic. He’s very close to earning his PGA Tour card through the PGA Tour University Accelerated points system.
The Sony is also important for another reason—it begins the Aon Swing 5 where the top five FedEx Cup point earners after these next three events will qualify for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a signature event.
Last year Grayson Murray won the event with a long, dramatic 40-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff against Keegan Bradley and Ben An. Murray tragically took his own life four months later.
Here’s the rundown of what each player will earn this week who makes the cut.
