Rory McIlroy got his heart ripped out at the Irish Open on Sunday. On Thursday at the BMW PGA Championship, he got a clubhead ripped off.

Not that it hurt the four-time major champ. McIlroy was on fire at Wentworth during the first round of the DP World Tour event when he arrived at the par-5 12th. After a great drive, he took aim with an 8-iron. And then this happened:

OK, so there’s a LOT going on there. First, the clubhead snaps off at impact, going flying down the fairway. But the shot winds up perfect, finishing eight feet from the hole. Although a stunned Rory seems to be much more focused on his damaged 8-iron. That’s one of the weirdest golf highlights you’ll ever see.

We saw something earlier this year on the PGA Tour when Ludvig Aberg’s driver head snapped off on a tee shot at TPC San Antonio. And yet he still managed to drive the green. These guys are good.

Anyway, here’s a cool photo of the clubhead snapping off at the moment of impact:

Sadly, McIlroy didn’t convert the great eagle look, but he tapped in for birdie to grab the early lead on Day 1. And, yes, he’s allowed to replace the club. If he’s got another 8-iron handy, that is.
