Champions!

Karin Schmedes and Caroline Rosentock were waving more than the mighty German flag after capturing the inaugural event of the new ‘2018 Nations Tour presented by OMEGA’. Call the win at The Address Montgomerie Dubai a personal triumph within a greater victory for women’s golf in the UAE.

The German duo are relative newcomers to the sport – Rosenstock has been playing four years, 12 months longer than Schmedes – but it didn’t stop them emerging from a field of seasoned male amateurs to win the unique pairs aggregate stableford event with 75 points - on a countback from Irishmen John Hughes and Damien Murray. Rahul Yadav and Vikram Malhotra, representing India, finished third with a net aggregate of 71.

Rosentock (pictured second from right) and Schmedes were quick to acknowledge respected UAE pro Sandy Meyer and her Women’s Golf Middle East initiative, not just for helping hone their games but also for keeping them engaged in a game that can be dismissive of players who take up the sport later in life, and especially by “50 something” women.

Even more surreal for the duo than their win were the quality of the prizes they collected – spots in the OMEGA Dubai Ladies Classic Pro-Am in December along with a pair of season hospitality passes to the Ladies European Tour event. Both admitted afterwards they had no idea what a Pro-Am is.

They are soon to discover the joy of Pro-Am golf and given their focused play at The Monty, are sure to do Meyer, their WGME peers and themselves proud.

The top-10 pairs from each qualifying event automatically progress to the 2018 Nations Tour presented by OMEGA Grand Final at Emirates Golf Club in November. The next qualifier, which also carries coveted Pro-Am spots to the men’s and women’s OMEGA Classics, is scheduled for April 26 at Trump International Golf Club Dubai.
