We can only imagine the sinking feeling Michael Brennan had when he saw his lie during the playoff of Monday’s US Open final qualifier at Woodmont Country Club. After a second-round 65 put the Wake Forest junior into extra holes, his heroic effort looked like it would be all for naught with an approach shot that managed to get buried into thick rough atop a steep bunker. Talk about a brutal break at the most brutal of times.

But the reigning ACC men’s champ found a stance and figured out a way to pull off the most insane — and most clutch — par save of his life. And now he’ll get to play in his first US Open next week.

OK, let’s get to the shot, which fortunately was caught on video. And if you think we’re exaggerating about its difficulty, well, think again. Just look at this situation!

That is absolutely dead right there. Or so it appeared. But here’s the miraculous shot and subsequent putt to earn the final spot up for grabs at the Maryland qualifier:
