Scottie Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament, becoming only the second player to win the event in consecutive years. The other was Tiger Woods, which seems fitting given that Scheffler uses TaylorMade P7TW irons based off Woods’ muscleback blades.

“I grew up playing Nike clubs like Tiger, so these had a special appeal to me,” Scheffler told Golf Digest in 2022. “I figured if he was using the irons they had to be pretty good.” Scheffler’s irons have True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips.

“If somebody were to go buy a set, there’s no difference [to what Scottie is playing],” TaylorMade tour rep Adrian Rietveld said. “They’re the same thing. The highest quality product, from every tolerance to the grooves and milled grind sole. There’s no belt that’s hitting these clubs.”

Scheffler’s maintenance of the clubs, which he used to rank second in strokes gained/approach as well as greens in regulation, might be the most interesting aspect. While tour pros routinely have fresh grips put on their clubs, Scheffler’s rarely see the inside of the tour truck for that purpose.

“He’s never approached me or the tour truck and asked us to change his grips,” Rietveld revealed. Apparently, Scheffler is so particular about hand placement and feels that he’d prefer to break a grip in and use it until the club needs to be replaced.

Speaking of which, when a pro replaces a set of irons, he usually pulls every club out of the bag. According to Rietveld, Scheffler does the exact opposite and replaces each iron as it begins to wear out.

“I would honestly say that he treats each change as one [club],” Rietveld said. “He treats it as a set of irons, but he also treats it as an individual, as each iron is its own piece of equipment. If his pitching wedge is worn, he’s gonna replace it with a pitching wedge. He’s not replacing a full set.”

This year, no one replaced Scheffler as Memorial champion, either.
