As Emirates Golf Club prepares to host some of the biggest names in golf to contest the Hero Dubai Desert Classic from January 16-19 next week, meticulous efforts are being made behind the scenes to prepare the iconic Majlis Course for the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood to do battle.

Here’s the prize money breakdown for each golfer at the 2025 Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Matthew Perry, Course Superintendent at Emirates Golf Club, oversees a team of over 100 who work while most of the UAE is sleeping, to ensure the golf course lives up to its reputation as one of the very best in world golf.

“The preparation for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic is all about attention to detail,” said Perry. “Regular maintenance efforts are taken to an entirely new level for this tournament. It’s important for us to give the course a little rest in the build-up to the event but then we hit it pretty hard come tournament week, rolling greens, increasing cutting frequency, and adjusting grass heights to achieve the desired tournament conditions.”

Preparation is a year-round effort, starting immediately after the conclusion of the previous tournament.

“Planning begins as soon as the last event wraps up,” explained Perry. “We assess areas for improvement, such as extending holes or refining specific aspects of the course. A lot of the big projects will then be done over the summertime to minimise disruption.”

Sustainability at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic

With an emphasis on sustainability, the team collaborates closely with the GEO-certified event’s organisers Falcon and Associates, to minimise water usage, employ moisture probes, and conserve resources. These eco-conscious initiatives have earned Emirates Golf Club accolades, including a sustainability award at the DP World Tour Championship.

Managing Dubai’s unique climate poses additional challenges. Cooler weather post-overseeding is ideal, but excessive rain can impact the firmness of fairways and greens.

“We prepare for all possible scenarios to ensure the course meets tournament standards,” Perry said.

As the tournament approaches, efforts are focused on refining greens to meet the desired speeds, with last year’s greens achieving speeds averaging 13.3 on the Stimpmeter.

During tournament week, the team grows to include 105 staff members, including seconded staff members from Yas Links, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

“Early tee times mean much of the work is done in the dark,” said Perry. “From hand-mowing greens to perfecting every blade of grass, every team member plays a critical role.”

2024 Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, praised the dedication and hard work put in by the Dubai Golf agronomy team to achieve such a high standard.

“The work that Matt and the team do is amazing, it is an exact science to bring the course to peak at the right time. It is a very complex process and the Emirates Golf Club team deliver successfully year on year to championship standards,” said Corkill. “It’s vital that we communicate with Matt’s team to make sure that the tournament infrastructure dovetails seamlessly with their preparations. The synergy between our teams ensures that we deliver a world-class experience for both players and fans.”

The Majlis Course, renowned as the first course to host a European Tour event outside Europe, holds a special place in the golfing world, with the Hero Dubai Desert Classic consistently attracting a world-class field. Gaining accolades from some of the greatest players ever to play the game, makes it all worthwhile for Perry and his team.

“Seeing the course showcased on TV and receiving appreciation from players is huge for us,” said Perry. “It really is a massive team effort, we all work really well together and have a great synergy in the team so to see it all come together during tournament week is extremely rewarding for everyone.”

With a star-studded field and a course prepared to perfection, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic continues to set the standard for golfing excellence and highlights Dubai’s position as a leading sporting destination on the world stage. Established in 1989, the tournament is a key fixture on the DP World Tour and a part of the esteemed Rolex Series, instrumental in introducing golf to the Middle East and producing some of the sport’s most memorable moments.

Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club (SGSC) played host to one of its most eagerly anticipated events on Sunday, 16th December 2024: the 15th edition of the ‘Ultimate Pairs’ tournament.

A competitive field of golfers gathered at SGSC to take on the challenge of 36 holes, played across four distinct formats, all vying for the prestigious prizes on offer. After a thrilling day of golf, it was the dynamic brother duo of Hanief and Rian Sallie who emerged victorious, successfully defending their title to be crowned the 2024 ‘Ultimate Pair.’

The Sallies dominated all four formats, posting scores of 33, 36, 33, and finishing strong with a 36 in the challenging Foursomes format. Their total score of 138 saw them edge out the competition by a narrow margin of just one shot. “We are absolutely delighted with the win,” said Hanief Sallie. “The event was brilliantly organised, and the course conditions were superb, which made the competition all the more enjoyable.”

In second place were Ramli Sulaiman and Steve Duque, who played a superb round of golf. Their total score of five under par fell just one shot short of the top spot, earning them the runner-up position. Rail Shavaleev and Naveen Mishra claimed the Best Gross prize with an impressive total of 135, highlighting their exceptional skill on the day.

Additional prizes were awarded for performances in specific formats. Gurbax Singh and Satnam Kaur took home the Best Texas Scramble award with an outstanding three-under-par score, while Amiya Ranjan and Joe Bautista were crowned winners of the Best Greensome prize, posting a remarkable score of 33. The Betterball prize was claimed by Josh Vardy and Humayun Kaleem, who carded an impressive three under par. Lastly, the Foursomes prize was won by Yu Wei Dong and Yu Tang Lee, whose excellent score of 31 sealed their victory in the final format of the day.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, with participants thoroughly enjoying the challenge presented by the four different formats. The day showcased the competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and camaraderie that the SGSC Ultimate Pairs Championship is known for, making it a memorable occasion for all involved.

The 2025 Challenge Tour is a little over one month away and is gearing up for its most exciting season yet.

With a record €9,000,000 prize fund on the line and 29 global tournaments across 18 different countries, a big part of this year’s action will once again be in the United Arab Emirates, where the UAE Challenge and Abu Dhabi Challenge are set to be pivotal events for the region.

These two tournaments are not only key moments on the Road to Mallorca, but also highlight the growing importance of the UAE in the global golf scene.

Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 2024 UAE Challenge Champion – Octavio Passos / Getty Images

Between April 10–13, the UAE Challenge returns, this time at the new venue of Al Zorah Golf Club in Ajman, marking a new chapter for professional golf in the emirate.

This will be the first time the Challenge Tour visits the Jack Nicklaus design layout. Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen claimed the 2024 edition of the tournament at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, one of three victories that season, which earned him automatic qualification onto the DP World Tour.

England’s Garrick Porteous – 2024 Abu Dhabi Challenge Champion – Octavio Passos / Getty Images

But that’s not all! The Abu Dhabi Challenge follows the week after, once again at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, continuing the UAE’s tradition of hosting world-class golf events. Having hosted the Challenge Tour event in 2024, the club has also played host to the Faldo Junior Tour Europe Grand Final and the UAE Cup this year.

As part of the European Tour Group’s long-term partnership with the Emirates Golf Federation, both events in the United Arab Emirates will offer another exciting chance for up-and-coming golfers to shine.

UAE’s Joshua Grenville-Wood – Octavio Passos / Getty Images

For all the players on the Road to Mallorca, these two tournaments offer more than just valuable ranking points—they’re a chance to showcase their skills in one of the most prestigious golf destinations in the world.

After an 11-month-long stretch of 28 events, the end-of-season Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final will take place in Mallorca from October 30 – November 2, as the top 45 players on the Rankings battle it out for one of the life-changing 20 DP World Tour cards.

Those 20 players who benefit from this formal pathway to the DP World Tour will then be eligible for the DP World Tour’s Earnings Assurance Programme, guaranteeing them minimum earnings of $150,000 for the 2026 season if they play in 15 or more events.

Arabian Ranches Golf Club has reopened its back nine holes with major renovations having been completed over the last five months.

After the significant rainfall that hit the UAE back in April, the damage caused by the flooding created an opportunity to repair and enhance not only the flooded areas but also parts of the course that had historically experienced groundwater issues.

During the closure of holes 10 – 18, the club has undergone significant enhancements to improve the playing experience for all, and after seeing them in person, I go into further detail on those alterations, as it welcomes back the UAE’s golfers to its full 18 holes.

Harry Grimshaw

TEE BOXES

Firstly, all the tee boxes on the back nine right from the red tees at the front, to the black championship tees at the back, have been entirely resurfaced and rebuilt. All have been laser graded, levelled and resurfaced with new paspalum.

The tee boxes on the front nine will be a work in progress over the next 12 months to match those on the back nine.

CART PATHS

The second modifications are the raising of the cart paths in key areas where they were prone
to flooding.

With any amount of rain, these were areas where accessibility became a problem. Whether it’s maintenance vehicles or golf carts, the flooded parts caused a problem for anyone getting around the golf course. So, now with the new raised paths, that risk is significantly lower.

It also benefits the maintenance vehicles getting access to the course quicker and more easily after a potential storm, and get golf carts around more quickly.

ISOLATED AREAS

Hole 15
There were some isolated problem areas which needed to be addressed. The main one being around the front right section of the short par four risk-reward 15th hole. This area short right of the green was an area always renowned for sitting in the water table and leading to having poorer quality turf because the root base was below the water table. That meant, the turf health was negatively affected by that.

Harry Grimshaw

That area has now been raised higher, and as a result, the turf will be much healtheir going forward and still being able to keep the original design intent of the golf course retained.

Hole 10
The biggest damage experienced on the 10th hole was around the green. At times of heavy rainfall, the green would get completely flooded. The forward section of the opening hole on the back nine has now been raised between 30 to 40cm in places. Still keeping in mind the original design with it’s contours and topography, it’s a very similar green in terms of slopes, but just slightly higher than it previously was to now protect it from any future flooding.

Harry Grimshaw

Additionally, parts of the 10th fairway, particularly on the forward half of the hole in the 100 yard range, has been raised by up to 40cm to guarantee that the turf is as healthy as possible by ensuring it is out of the flood line. This also allows the agronomy team to ensure better drainage on the hole overall. When it does rain again the water will drain off into the desert areas and into the hollows around the grass in the fairway, rather than lying on the actual surface on the fairway and causing damage.

Hole 13
The par five 13th was the biggest challenge of the whole project. Very similar procedure to hole ten, in that the fairway on the approach from approximately 150 – 170 yards out all the way up to the front of the green, was raised in areas up to 70cm. Historically, this was one of the biggest problem holes just because of the water table.

Harry Grimshaw

Now that forward part of the fairway, where in the past was prone to flooding even in times when it wasn’t raining, has now has been raised up.

So similar to the drainage on the 10th, it will be much better going forward. The water won’t lie on the fairway. It’ll drain into the lower lying desert areas around and because the root base of the grass is now out of the standard water table, the turf health improves dramatically.

All of those areas were re shaped and are now following the “grow-in” period now.

THE FUTURE

Going forward, a big part of the project at Arabian Ranches is essentially around detail work.

The surrounding desert areas are quite overgrown, primarily because of the good water that they’ve been receiving. After all the rain and the ground water being higher than usual, as well as the warmer conditions through summer, it has all come together to make prime growing conditions.

All of the fire grass, rough and shrubbery, around the desert areas, has become slightly overpowering and very difficult to manage. So now as we enter the winter, the growth slows down and the agronomy team will be able to get it under control and effectively make the golf course more playable.

Additionally, the team will continue to work on those details to make sure that the visual appeal of the golf course is as good as possible.

When standing on the tee boxes, you can already start to see on some of the holes, where they’ve been doing some work. The hard edge is now more defined down the side of the fairways and there is now a clear line that visually frames the fairway for you

It’s a concept and theme to tie throughout the entire golf course going forward. Once it all comes together, it means a lot less lost golf balls on the high-volume play areas, but still delivering a golf course that suits the eye and is more visually appealing for the club going forward.

McIlroy, with trophies in tow, also took part in a “Putt for Purpose” challenge on the court. In a bid to raise AED 1 million for charity, Rory attempted a hole-in-one, but his shot narrowly missed the target by a few inches. Despite the miss, the crowd roared in support, showing their admiration for McIlroy’s efforts.

Dubai Basketball’s, JaCorey Williams, reflected on how the home crowd, along with the presence of Rory McIlroy, pushed his team’s performance. “It’s always tough to play before a break, but we stayed focused defensively, and our offence flowed from there.

“Rory is a world-class athlete, and it was amazing to meet him and see his Race to Dubai trophy in person. It was a cool moment.”

This week the DP World Tour arrives in the largest of the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first of two season-ending playoff events. Sadly, however, what should be a big deal on what used to be the European Tour is lacking in a couple of important respects.

The non-attendance of six eligible players—Billy Horschel, Ludvig Aberg, Jon Rahm, Matthieu Pavon, Zander Lombard and Aaron Rai—means the 70-strong field contains those ranked 71-76 on the Race to Dubai. But perhaps the biggest downside to the $9 million event is an almost total absence of suspense when it come to the destination of the Harry Vardon Trophy that will go to the man who eventually tops the season-long rankings.

As things stand, Rory McIlroy has amassed 4,532.33 points in the 10 DP World Tour events in which he has participated this season. As a mark of just how well the Northern Irishman has played in pursuit of what will surely be his sixth Race to Dubai rankings victory, his nearest challenger this time round is Thriston Lawrence. The burly South African has 2,959.04 points from 24 starts. In third place is Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard, who has 2,612.05 points from his 21 starts.

In other words, McIlroy, who will equal the record of the late Seve Ballesteros should he pick up his sixth title and trail only Colin Montgomerie’s eight Race to Dubai titles on the all-time list, has outperformed his fellow competitors by an almost ridiculous margin. While the four-time major champion has won only once—at the Dubai Desert Classic in January—on the DP World Tour in 2024, he has four second-place finishes (the U.S. Open finish counts in the total), as well as owning two other top-five showings. Only twice, at the Masters and the recent Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, has he finished outside the top 20. And only once, at the Open Championship, has the 35-year-old missed the cut. Overall, his level of performance has been outstanding.

All of which only adds to the notion that this thing is all but over. Still, undaunted, the DP World Tour website this week details a series of possible scenarios whereby McIlroy’s 1,572.39-point lead might just disappear. Statistically, as many as 36 players still have a chance of ending the season as European No. 1. Perhaps the only certainty, however, is that Lawrence and Hojgaard must stay within 2,000 points (which will go to the winner of next week’s DP World Tour Championship) of the leader going into the final tournament.

Elsewhere, the website details a series of almost comical possibilities. For example, fifth-placed Tommy Fleetwood needs to earn at least 541.93 points this week to stay in what might loosely be called “contention.” Sixth-placed Matteo Manassero requires at least 568.91 points. And the man in seventh spot, Niklas Norgaard, has to earn a minimum of 580.91. All those from 15th-placed Romain Langasque down to Sam Bairstow in 37th have to win this week on the 7,425-yard Yas Links course to keep their almost invisible hopes alive.

Here’s the clincher though. All of those requirements are dependent on one more crucial result: McIlroy finishing last this week. Chances are, that ain’t going to happen.

The Orient Travel Monthly Medal made a triumphant return on Saturday, 2nd November, as members gathered at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, which was in outstanding condition.

Junior member Dehan Ungerer stole the show, claiming this month’s title with an impressive net score of 69. Dehan’s round featured five net birdies and a remarkable gross birdie on a hole where he received two strokes. He was delighted to take home the fantastic prizes generously provided by the sponsors.

Taking the runner-up spot was Naveen Mishra, who also delivered a strong performance with a score of 71, finishing one under par. Low handicapper Josh Vardy matched that score but placed third following a countback.

The prize for the best gross score went to Ramli Sulaiman, who recorded a solid 76.

The Gross and Net Order of Merits will continue alongside the Orient Travel Monthly Medal, allowing us to see who emerges at the top by the end of the winter season.

The eyes of the golfing world will be firmly fixed on the UAE next month as the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, featuring the 70 highest-ranked available players on the DP World Tour, is held at Yas Links on November 7-10, taking up a new position on the calendar, before the top 50 available players battle it out during the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates one week later on November 14-17, where the DP World Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai champion will be crowned.
