Another week, another signature event. On the heels of the Cadillac Championship and Cameron Young winning, the tour was at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., for the Truist Championship, which was played in Philadelphia this year.

The top field did not include World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, but World No. 2 Rory McIlroy was there in his first start since winning the Masters. He tied for 19th place.

It was Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan who stunned everyone in golf, including himself, by walking away with a breakthrough victory. Not all that long ago he thought about walking away from competitive golf to be a full-time YouTube golfer, but he shot 64-69 on the weekend to capture his first PGA Tour title. He collected $3.6 million from the overall $20 million purse and heads to the PGA Championship full of confidence.

Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard tied for second place. Alex Fitzpatrick continued his impressive run with a tie for fourth place after winning two weeks ago with his brother Matt and then tying for ninth place last week at Doral.

On one hand, you could be forgiven for calling 28-year-old Kristoffer Reitan the story-killer. If he hadn’t shown a composure that belied his experience on the back nine at Quail Hollow on Sunday, cruising to a two-shot victory at the Truist Championship as his opponents faltered around him, we might be talking about something like:

—Rickie Fowler earning his first tour win in three years —Alex Fitzpatrick putting the doubters to rest after they questioned his two-plus year exemption for winning the Zurich Classic with his brother —Nicolai Hojgaard becoming the first Danish man to win on the PGA Tour

All great stories, yes, but to regret their nonfulfillment is to sell Reitan short: he’s got a pretty good story, too.

The Norwegian has been quietly creeping up on the top levels of the game, earning his PGA Tour card for 2026 by capturing two DP World Tour events last year, and then hanging around the top half of leaderboards in America through the spring. In the last month, a T-10 at the Texas Open and a T-14 in Doral spoke to his potential.

At the Cadillac Championship a week ago, he made it into the field on Thursday afternoon, when Jake Knapp withdrew with a thumb injury. It felt so improbable to both him and his caddie Tim Poyser that Poyser flew back to Scotland. He had to hurry back on the first available flight, arriving on Friday to loop for the man that eventually finished inside the top 15. A double bogey on the last hole in that event seemed to doom him for this week’s Truist, but in the arcane formulas that determine fields at signature events, a late Alex Smalley bogey moved enough pieces around to give Reitan qualification through the Aon 5.

And now look at him.

Kristoffer Reitan's first career victory!

He's just the second player from Norway to win on the PGA TOUR, joining Viktor Hovland. pic.twitter.com/TuJ88pYOFE

Reitan’s Saturday 64 vaulted him to just one shot off Alex Fitzpatrick’s 54-hole lead, but when the latter faded early on Sunday, Reitan seized a quick lead. An even par front kept him near the top, though by early on the back nine, the crowded leaderboard included four players at 13 under. To win, he’d have to outduel Fowler, Hojgaard, and several others. But the tension took effect, as did the difficulty of Quail Hollow, and arriving to the relatively easy 14th and 15th holes, Reitan had a chance to put his stamp on the tournament.

That’s exactly what he did, with two consecutive birdies. An up-and-down from the sand on 14 and a two-putt from 55 feet on 15 gave him a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Fitzpatrick’s double bogey on 17 saw his chances come to an end, and when Hojgaard couldn’t sink his birdie putt at the last to apply any pressure, Reitan capped off the improbable win with a simple two-putt par.

“I don’t have any words, to be honest,” he said in the moments after his victory. “This is way more than I expected, and for it to happen this quickly is just unreal. Dream come true.”

Reitan has been quietly creeping up on the top levels of the game, earning his PGA Tour card for 2026 by capturing two DP World Tour events last year, and then hanging around the top half of leaderboards in America through the spring. In the last month, a T-10 at the Texas Open and a T-14 in Doral spoke to his potential.

The improbability, though, doesn’t stop with just making the field. In 2022, in the midst of serious struggles with his game, he took most of a year off from the sport. He even entertained the idea of making a career from YouTube golf. He recommitted to the idea of finding joy in the game, and the joy led to the success he’d been chasing.

“It helped me find my game again,” he said. “It helped me discover my talents again. It was something really important to me, which I try to remind myself of every single day.”

Jared C. Tilton

On the nuts and bolts, Reitan has excelled off the tee in 2026, been slightly below average on approach, and genuinely struggled putting. That all changed this week, when he finished with 5.158 strokes gained/putting, better than anyone in the field except Patrick Rodgers. He was similarly top-10 off the tee and on approach, but on Sunday, it was the pair of clutch birdie putts on 14 and 15 that made up the ultimate margin of victory.

Alex Fitzpatrick, despite positive words from Rory McIlroy and his own brother, stumbled both at the start and the finish, and could only muster a solo fourth-place finish despite showing impressive resolve early on the back nine, with three birdies in four holes to surge back to the top of the leaderboard. He was joined there by Fowler, who came out scorching hot to post a 30 on the front nine, and reached 14 under before a bogey on 18. His 65 gave him the clubhouse lead, and it lasted all the way until the final putt when Reitan closed the deal. Cameron Young, fresh off a Saturday 63—the best round of the tournament—and his win last week in Doral, struggled from the start and limped to a closing 74 for a T-10 finish.

Reitan will tee it up this coming week at the PGA Championship, his first time in that event and just the fourth major of his career. A victory at Aronimink feels far-fetched, even after capturing a signature event, but when you consider the trajectory of Reitan’s career, and especially his last month, “far-fetched” starts to look like a better bet than you’d expect.

If you scratched your head when the name Kristoffer Reitan appeared on the leaderboard in the Truist Championship, you’re not alone. There’s really been no reason to notice the 28-year-old Norwegian who is a rookie on the PGA Tour, other than a late Sunday charge a few weeks ago in the team Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Reitan arrived to compete in America this year on the strength of a top-10 finish in last season’s DP World Tour standings. It’s a handsome reward for those toiling on the European circuit, and then there is this: The PGA Tour has its promotion model into the big events in the form of in-season ladders—the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5.

Put simply, play great early in the season and now you’re truly competing in the big leagues.

That leads to Reitan, who’s posted three top-14s in his past four starts, including a T-2 in the Zurich Classic, where he and Kris Ventura made some noise with a final-round 65.

It looked as if Reitan had played well enough to advance into his first signature event, the Truist, but then he was crushed by making two double bogeys, including at the 72nd hole, in the final round of the Cadillac Championship last week.

“On the 18th tee on Sunday last week I was not in the tournament this week,” Reitan recalled on Saturday. “Because I made double and one more player bogeyed, [Alex] Smalley hopped up a couple spots on the leaderboard, which then put him in the Aon 10, which then put me in the Aon 5.

‘It was a little bit mind blowing,” Reitan said. “But I’ll take it.”

Of course he will because Reitan heads into Sunday’s final round at Quail Hollow trailing only fellow rookie Alex Fitzpatrick (14 under) by one shot after both players scored 64 in the third round. It figures to be a nervy final round for each, as they’re most closely trailed, at 12 under, by World No. 4 Cam Young, whose Cadillac victory last week followed his earlier triumph in the Players Championship.

Asked what he was most excited about for the final round, Reitan said, “Just the opportunity to be near the leaderboard on a Sunday at a PGA Tour event … rookie season, I’m just over the moon about that.”

The trio at the top have some interesting ties. Reitan and Fitzpatrick go back to their junior golf days together in Europe, and they now belong to the same golf club in Florida. It was also Alex, along with brother Matt, who beat out Reitan and Ventura in capturing the Zurich.

Meantime, Alex Fitzpatrick and Young overlapped for one college season at Wake Forest.

“He’s great. I have nothing but good things to say about Cam,” Fitzpatrick said. “Him, and then there was probably two other seniors—Kyle [Sterbinsky], his caddie—they all looked after me and took my under their wing. … I love him to bits. Happy to be out here with him.”

Young thought of Fitzpatrick enough to text him when the Englishman won his first DP World Tour title in March in India. At that point, Fitzpatrick hadn’t earned his PGA Tour card. That came with the win in New Orleans.

“Didn’t think he was thinking he would see me in the next two weeks,” Fitzpatrick said, “but, yeah, he sent me a nice text. Every time he’s played well, I feel like I’ve tried to message him as well. Yeah, the feeling is mutual.”

Even before locking up his second victory of 2025 at the Truist Championship on Sunday, Sepp Straka was hardly a lock to make the European Ryder Cup team. In fact, he was nowhere near the top 12 of the European Team standings, and miles away from the top six that earn automatic spots.

Wait, what?

Quail Hollow closed to spectators on Monday due to heavy rain as early week weather looks rough

How is it possible that a top 20 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, even prior to Sunday, who already won this calendar year and who played on the winning European side in 2023 and earned a point as a rookie, was not even close to the top 12?

Well, as seven-time European Ryder Cupper Rory McIlroy reminded Straka Sunday afternoon, his Truist win meant just a little more than his American Express victory back in January.

“He told me at least this win counts for Ryder Cup points,” Straka said. “Yeah, really, really happy for that. I’ve been kind of behind in the points because of that win at Amex not counting.”

Not just behind, but 20th in the standings before outlasting Shane Lowry at Philly Cricket Club. Lowry and Straka played together twice in Rome in 2023, going 0-2. With Lowry second in the European standings behind only McIlroy, the Irish-Austrian duo may have a chance to rectify that at Bethpage Black this fall.

“I knew that, if I just kept playing good golf, I would have a chance to be there,” he added. “I’m sure this will probably help me out with the rankings a lot. So very grateful, and hopefully I can keep the good play going and keep getting some more points.”

More than a lot. Straka is now fifth in the standings, a 15-spot jump that places him among the six automatic qualifiers, a group filled out by Lowry, McIlroy, Rasmus Højgaard, Tyrrell Hatton and Justin Rose. Behind them at No. 7 and No. 8 are Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood. A squad is forming, to say the least.

Of course, there is still much to be decided and many more points to be accumulated. The top six does not lock in until the end of the Betfred British Masters, which ends August 24. But Sunday’s win will go a long way for Straka, who would love to add two-time Ryder Cupper to a resume that includes four PGA Tour victories, a pair of major top 10s and the distinction of World No. 9, the highest ranking of his career in the OWGR.

It was called the Truist Championship for the first time. It was the Wells Fargo Championship last year. This year the event was a Philadelphia Cricket Club, which received rave reviews. Last year it was at Quail Hollow Club. Last year Rory McIlroy won. This year it was Sepp Straka, who collected his fourth PGA Tour title.

Straka, 32, earned $3.6 million from the $20 million purse for winning the signature event. He joins Rory McIlroy as the only two players to win twice on tour this year. Straka won the American Express event in Palm Springs earlier this season. He topped Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry by two shots. Lowry had a birdie putt to tie Straka on the 72nd hole but three-putted to drop back with Thomas, who shot 67.

Nine of the top 10 players in the world were in the field, highlighted by McIlroy, a three-time winner this year including the Players and the Masters. He opened with 66-67 and tied for seventh place. He now heads to the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club looking to win a second major this year at a place where he’s won multiple times on the PGA Tour.

Scottie Scheffler, of course, hopes to have something to say about it all. The World No. 1 won his first PGA Tour title of the year two weeks ago in Texas and is clearly rounding into form. Xander Schauffele, last year’s PGA champion, tied for 11th place at the Truist.

Not that you would ever dismiss a player ranked 17th in the world, but Straka is entering a different stratosphere after his two-stroke victory Sunday in the $20 million Truist Championship. With a final-round two-under 68 at Philadelphia Cricket Club, Straka outdueled European Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry for his second victory of the year. He joins Rory McIlory as the only multiple winners on the PGA Tour this season.

A native of Austria, who spent many of his formative years in Georgia, Straka finished at 16-under 264 and collected $3.6 million in bettering the elite field in the year’s sixth signature event. Straka now has four career titles, all gathered in the last three years.

“It’s huge, the biggest win of my career,” Straka, 32, said. “Yeah, just so grateful for the process and the whole team that kind of makes me play as well as I do. Every week … my coaches weren’t here this week, but they’re there almost every week. Even this week when they weren’t here, there’s always a back and forth, and they’re always working on my game to help me succeed. It’s great to see their hard work pay off.”

And hard work it was, with Straka admitting that the day-long pressure was taxing. “It’s hard to eat. You just feel kind of nauseous,” he said. “You can’t feel your arms, legs, whatever. You’re just kind of fighting through it, but that’s what makes it fun, when you’re pulling off shots with that feeling. It makes it real special.”

Lowry, 38, bogeyed two of the last three holes in his head-to-head duel with Straka, which constituted the difference on the scoreboard after they began the day sharing the 54-hole lead. The Irishman closed with a 70 and 266 total and shared his second runner-up finish of the year with Justin Thomas, who shot 67 in his bid for a second straight signature event win. Thomas has three second-place finishes this year (two of them to Straka, the other coming at the American Express) and 10th of his career.

Straka managed to forge a two-stroke lead at the turn only to bogey 10 and 11 to restore a tie with Lowry that remained unbroken until the pivotal par-three 16th. Lowry pulled his tee shot into heavy rough above the bunker and then deftly pitched to six feet only to miss the par attempt.

He still had a chance at the par-4 home hole, but his tying birdie try from 20 feet skittered six feet by. When he missed the comeback attempt, Straka could breathe easier and rolled in a four-footer for par and the win. Putting was crucial for Straka; he ranked second in strokes gained/putting at plus-8.660 after entering the week ranked 63rd for the season on tour. He was third in total feet of putts made on the tricky Philadelphia Cricket Club greens.

Straka and Lowry each moved inside top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking—Straka for the first time. Definitely time to take this guy seriously, especially when he admitted to not having his best ball-striking performance.

He’s come a long way since his days as a fairly average player in junior golf.

“I would say consistency, consistency of working at it regardless of where I was in my in game,” he said of his rise in professional golf. “Junior golf, I wasn’t all that good. I definitely had some talent. I could hit the golf ball fairly well, but very rough around the edges. At Georgia I just felt like I kept getting better. Had a quick bout with the chipping yips my junior year and redshirted, but other than that, I felt like I just kept getting better.

“After I graduated, same thing. I just kept trying to improve my golf game regardless of where I was compared to other people in my class because my high school class was pretty stacked. A lot of guys ended up finishing early and going onto the PGA Tour, and I was definitely not one of those. Regardless of where I was, I just kept trying to improve my golf game and hoped that at the end of it, it would be good enough to play out here.”

It’s definitely good enough. Better than most at the moment.

Truist Financial Corporation, the PGA Tour and Quail Hollow Club announced Tuesday that Truist has signed a seven-year agreement to take over title sponsorship of the tour event at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. It will now be known as the Truist Championship and will continue to be one of the tour’s eight signature events.

Although Quail Hollow will continue to be the host of the event, the club is holding the PGA Championship next year for the second time. So the first edition of the Truist Championship will be played at Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course in 2025. It is scheduled for May 8-11. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion after winning the tournament title in May when he played a six-hole stretch in six under par on the back-nine Sunday to shoot 65 and topped Xander Schauffele by five shots despite making a double bogey on the 72nd hole.

“We are honoured to be the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s Charlotte-based signature event and thrilled that Philadelphia and Charlotte, two vibrant growth markets for Truist, will be featured on the PGA Tour,” said Truist chairman and CEO Bill Rogers. “We look forward to partnering with the PGA Tour to elevate this wonderful championship event and Truist’s deep community impact, and to further fulfil our purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities.”

Said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan: “We are delighted to welcome Truist to the PGA Tour family as the new title sponsor of the Truist Championship, a signature event that has continued to grow in size and stature since its introduction to the golf calendar more than two decades ago.”

The event debuted in 2003 when David Toms topped Robert Gamez by two shots. It was called the Wachovia Championship from 2003-2008. After two years of being named the Quail Hollow Championship, Wells Fargo took over sponsorship in 2011 until this year’s event. It was played at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., in 2017 because Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship that year. And two years ago, the Presidents Cup was at Quail Hollow, so the tour event moved to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland.

McIlroy has won four times, including his first PGA Tour victory in 2010. He also won in 2015, 2021 and then his win this year, which is his most recent tour title.
