The phone started ringing early and often on Monday morning. It’s a sound J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, Titleist director of player promotion, has become accustomed to hearing every May when new product is released.

Even years are metalwoods, odd years are irons. It didn’t take players long to realise it was an iron year when photos hit social media.

“The phones were pretty busy when we leaked photos on Monday morning,” Van Wezenbeeck said. “Plenty of requests and interest from guys.”

Unlike previous years, Titleist commenced tour seeding at Colonial Country Club instead of Muirfield Village Golf Club. The location change wasn’t an indictment of Jack’s place but rather an opportunity to introduce an iron lineup at a course that prioritises approach shots.

MORE: Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge

A look at the latest T100 in the address position. (Jonathan Wall/Golf Digest)

“It’s a good chance to showcase the stuff that we’re really excited about with a lot of players and a lot of players looking to test,” said Van Wezenbeeck. “This is a great golf course, because there are a number of challenging iron shots, particularly long irons, whether it’s long par 3s or tee shots.”

But enough about why Colonial is a good fit for an iron launch. The obvious question on every gearhead’s mind is what’s going on underneath the hood. Titleist tour reps weren’t ready to talk about all the technical stuff quite yet, but they dropped some gear morsels over the first three days.

The buzzword, at least for this week, is “feel.” While it isn’t the sexiest storyline, how an iron feels (and sounds) can make or break a testing session — and it was on display this week with some of the best players in the world.

Joseph Bramlett poses after hitting a shot with Titleist’s T250 4-iron on the Colonial driving range. (Jonathan Wall/Golf Digest)

It didn’t take Joseph Bramlett long to notice something was different about the T250 4-iron as he took cuts on the range. The 37-year-old has relied on a T200 off the tee and into the green, but the overall feel didn’t check every box. Even when you’re mixing and matching different iron models, the goal is to find a way to keep sound and feel consistent through the set.

“It only took a few balls to notice a big difference,” Bramlett said. “My current 4-iron feels almost like a hybrid, but this one is definitely clicky. It felt a lot more like my 8-iron. That kind of difference in sound makes me excited.”

Of course, Bramlett wasn’t the only pro who gave T-Series high marks in the feel department. Defending Charles Schwab Challenge champion Davis Riley also raved about how the irons felt during initial range testing with Van Wezenbeeck.

“We want to focus on performance, but feel resonates with so many players,” Van Wezenbeeck said. “You really want to nail it with the players. We had guys like Davis hitting it and going, ‘Wow, these just feel so good.’ That kind of feedback reinforces all the work that went into each iron.”

Jordan Spieth conducted head-to-head testing between 2023 T100 and 2025 T100 on Monday morning. (Jonathan Wall/Golf Digest)

Other aspects that earned high marks were the cleaner overall look and subtle changes to the shaping at address. — something Jeremy Paul noticed as he admired the T100 head shape in between shots.

“This one is a touch more like my old [T100] irons,” said Paul. “The previous version looked too skinny on top. I’m always looking for something that’s pleasing to the eye. I really liked the 2021 T100, and this one is more similar to that.

“I’ve always noticed they are a touch less hot out of the rough and spin a bit more from wet conditions, too. Those are things you want when you hit it offline. More consistency from those different conditions is a good thing.”

When everything is clicking with a new set of irons, it’s natural to want to put them in play right away. Charley Hoffman conducted testing ahead of time at TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) in Oceanside, California, and opted to put the irons in play for U.S. Open qualifying. Peter Malnati went the same route and played a blended set of T100 and T150 during qualifying, following a FaceTime testing session where he conversed with Titleist tour rep Nick Geyer over the phone and offered one-on-the-fly feedback.

Titleist T100 Iron

“Peter’s always one who’s super excited to test new stuff,” Van Wezenbeeck said. “Last week it was, ‘Hey, I really want to test these at home and see if it’s something I could use in the U.S. Open qualifier.’ He and Nick did a little bit of a FaceTime fit, and Peter played great but missed by one. It was still a cool first set to get in.”

As for the other marquee names in Titleist’s tour stable, they’ve all tested or played a role in the development of T-Series, particularly the T100, T150 and T250, prior to this week.

Earlier this season, during the West Coast Swing, Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Young, Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Aberg and Wyndham Clark descended upon TPI and worked directly with R&D to offer thoughts on the final product. The goal was to give the irons a final sign-off or offer possible last-minute changes before the design was finalised.

It’s all about offering up a compelling product that gives them a reason to switch during a pivotal stretch in the season. Based on the feedback emanating from Colonial this week, the new T-Series is already resonating with players.

There are some things that are certainties. Death, taxes and the biennial tour debut of Titleist irons, the latest of which occurred today at the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge and DP World Tour’s Soudal Open.

The collection includes new iterations of the company’s T100, T150, T250 and T350 irons along with T250•U and U•505 utility irons. Titleist irons have been the most played irons on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour for more than a decade, and the introduction is part of the company’s venerable tour validation process.

“It’s years of research, player feedback, player testing,” said JJ Van Wezenbeeck, Titleist’s senior director of club promotions. “To bring the product out, see it tested on the golf course during a tournament week and prove itself—it’s super exciting to see all that finally come to fruition.”

Titleist firmly believes that leveraging its tour staff and listening to the needs of the best players in the game is an integral part of creating products that work for all players.

Titleist brand ambassador Russell Henley, one of the best ball strikers on tour, knows what he is looking for in an iron.

“[With] 9-iron, what I want to do is hit one really hard and be able to put it way up in the air. And then I also want to [have the ability] to take a lot of speed off and take spin off, but I still want it to land soft,” said Henley on his process.

“And then when I get into my [long] irons, I want to be able to get that ball up in the air, but I don’t want to get it up in the air with too much spin. … Golf is getting to be more and more specific, and the more technology, the more that we’re learning about the game, the more every shot needs to be approached a little bit differently and be attacked in a different way.”

Henley ranks inside the top five on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation and proximity to the hole this season. The 36-year-old won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March with a blended set of T200 (4) and T100 (5-9) irons.

Although Titleist was mum on the details, photos show the T100 and T150 appear to have a dual-cavity design while the T250 and T350 feature a more blade-like back. Given that these irons have habitually been the most forgiving in the line it will be interesting to see if Titleist has possibly gone with a hollow-body design in these clubs. Stay tuned.

Tour validation” has been a staple of Titleist’s product introduction process for decades. That makes the introduction of 10 new Scotty Cameron putters at this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii not only notable for who might put the flat sticks in play, but also as a sneak peek for to what may find its way to retail stores in the coming months.

The prototype putters, with various head and neck configurations, including mallets and blades, are noteworthy as they provide a departure from previous Cameron putters with cutouts and thick, black-striped horizontal alignment lines.

Although a departure for Cameron, the look is familiar to Austie Rollinson, senior director for putter R&D for Titleist, who spent the bulk of his career at Odyssey where such designs were common.

Paul Vizanko, Scotty Cameron’s director of putter fitting & player development, along with tour reps Drew Page and Brad Cloke are at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu this week to work with players as they test the new models and begin to dial-in their setups.

“Tour validation is an important part of our R&D process,” Vizanko said. “We’re excited to be out here showing new product that we’ve been working on with players behind the scenes for the past year. Sound and feel play a huge role in distance control and overall putter performance, which all translates into confidence. These new designs deliver the craftsmanship we’ve always been known for while elevating performance and technology to a new level.”

And possibly a new line at retail, too. Stay tuned.

The Sentry marks the beginning of equipment release season for numerous brands. Pros show up with the newest gear in their bags. Spy photos from Kapalua turn into full-fledged retail releases — and away we go. It’s a cadence gearheads are used to experiencing.

But things are different this year. Instead of waiting until the Tour’s season-opening event to offer a peek at what’s coming down the pipeline, nearly every manufacturer chose to move up the tour releases. The list includes Callaway, Cobra, Ping, Srixon and TaylorMade.

In other words, practically the entire industry. With one exception.

On Monday, Titleist announced it was unveiling a GT280 mini driver to pros in the field at Kapalua that’s sure to raise some eyebrows. The release is a massive detraction from Titleist’s usual metalwoods release schedule that began back in June when GT drivers and fairway woods were first introduced at the Memorial.

It’s safe to assume GT280 isn’t your average metalwood, which is why Titleist opted to do a separate tour launch. The beginning of its tour validation process will offer pros the opportunity to test the mini product and put it in play. As for the name, it’s plausible the 280 denotes the head size — 280cc’s.

Titleist refrained from offering specifics behind the design but did confirm several staffers, including Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris, worked with R&D to design another option at the top of the setup. Both Young and Zalatoris have been working on 13-degree heads that can be used off the tee and from the fairway.

While GT280 is a new addition to the GT lineup, a mini driver prototype has been floating around on tour since March when a TSR prototype 2-wood surfaced at the Players Championship. Unsurprisingly, Young was the first pro to put it in the bag.

Mini drivers have been growing in popularity since Phil Mickelson deployed Callaway’s Phrankenwood at the 2013 Masters, and a 13-degree X Hot 3Deep as his “driver” en route to winning the Open Championship later that same year.

The mini isn’t a club for everyone, but it’s gained enough traction in recent years to become a credible secondary option off the tee. Tommy Fleetwood and Bryson DeChambeau both carry a mini driver in their regular equipment setups, due in large part to the greater variability of launch and extra spin when compared to a 460cc driver. A larger profile than a smaller-headed 3-wood adds an additional layer of off-center forgiveness.

Similar to the TSR prototype 2-wood, the GT280 boasts a deeper profile than even the larger “Plus” fairway wood with white scoring lines on the face. Earlier this year when Young put the TSR 2-wood in play, Titleist tour rep JJ Van Wezenbeeck said the lines offered the ideal visuals for a less-than-driver club.

“Putting the score lines on it with the fairway shaping and having the leading edge sit tighter to the ground with that bigger volume was the mix we were looking for,” he said. “This isn’t a one-trick pony.”

The GT280 is a tour-only offering at the moment, but if it’s out amongst the pros, it’s very likely it’ll be coming to retail in 2025.

Scottie Scheffler remains the closest thing to a human cheat code in professional golf. Earlier this week, the 28-year-old secured his third PGA Tour Player of the Year award, joining Tiger Woods as the only men to be honoured three consecutive years.

The following day, Scheffler was identified as Google’s most-searched golfer for 2024, breaking a two-decade run for Woods as golf’s king of the interwebs. All of the Tiger-Scottie talk eventually led to comparisons between Woods’ incredible 2000 season and Scheffler’s banner 2024 campaign.

Tiger won nine times, including three major championships. Scheffler won nine times, including a major and an Olympic gold medal. It’s natural to compare seasons and wonder if one is better than the other.

When asked during a Jack Nicklaus Aware presentation at a PGA Tour Superstore in Plano, Texas, how his season stacked up to Tiger’s 2000, Scheffler quickly squashed the comparisons.

“I think they’re a bit silly,” he said. “I think we’re always looking to compare somebody to Tiger Woods. I saw it a lot growing up. … There’s really only one Tiger, that’s just kind of it.”

Most golf fans would agree three consecutive major wins—which would eventually become four straight at the 2001 Masters—trumps a green jacket and gold medal. But if you need another reason to view Woods’ season as the best of all-time, just remember the 15-time major winner switched golf balls midway through the season at the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Hamburg, Germany.

And it wasn’t just any ball change. Unhappy with his performance at the 2000 Byron Nelson Classic (where he finished T-4), Woods opted to replace his Titleist Professional, which featured a liquid-filled core and wound construction, with Nike’s Tour Accuracy—a three-piece, solid construction prototype.

On the scale of drastic equipment changes, this one ranked right near the top. Not only was Woods changing balls mere weeks before the U.S. Open, but it was into a ball that boasted a markedly different construction than the Professional.

Woods was seeing roughly 2-3 mph of additional ball speed with the Tour Accuracy, which required him to adjust his carry yardages through the bag. It would have been natural to expect an adjustment period to the new ball, but Woods didn’t blink.

One week after playing the ball in Germany, Woods returned Stateside and won the Memorial by five shots. Then came a 15-shot win at the U.S. Open, followed by four wins in the next six starts.

Woods changed balls, arguably the one piece of gear pros are most hesitant to alter, and didn’t blink. To be clear, not every ball change is so seamless. Two years ago on the Chasing Majors podcast, Woods’ former caddie, Steve Williams, recalled Greg Norman’s switch to a high-spin Spalding ball, during the 1980s, that had the polar opposite effect on the Shark.

“When Tiger went to that Nike ball, it absolutely suited him,” Williams said. “But way back in the 1980s, Greg Norman played Spalding and went to the Tour Distance ball—he was obviously paid a lot of money to play Spalding and this new golf ball—and that ball was so detrimental to his career. It was the worst thing he ever did. That ball would’ve cost him two shots a round.”

For Woods, the drastic ball change allowed him to gain one to two shots per round, according to his looper, as he put together a stretch of golf that will most likely never be replicated.

“Every time you have a golf ball reacting to the way you want to hit it, I think that just frees you up and gives you confidence,” Williams said. “You’d have to say it was worth one or two shots per round, for sure.”

Scheffler may have the same number of wins at Woods, but only one can boast winning three majors immediately following a ball change.

On this week’s Golf IQ equipment podcast, we took a closer look at the Scheffler versus Woods debate and highlighted the ball change that’s rarely discussed. There’s also a deep dive into TaylorMade’s all-new Qi35 drivers, Justin Thomas’ driver hack and much more.

Ever since the debut of the original Pro V1 at the Invensys Classic in October 2000, Titleist has traditionally used the Las Vegas stop on the PGA Tour to reveal its latest iteration of the most-played ball on tour to its tour staff. This week at the Shriners Children’s Open, the company is doing that once again with the reveal of its 2025 versions of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls.

It has been two years since the last models were introduced, and while the company, as per its custom, is mum on details at this time, it is part of its long-held seeding and validation process with its players. The prototype balls will be delivered to players lockers this week and the process will continue over several months as the company seeks feedback from the game’s best on its latest product.

TPC Summerlin is where Titleist’s original Pro V1 prototypes were introduced to PGA Tour players. Billy Andrade won that event after being one of 47 players who put the ball in play that week, marking a seismic shift toward multilayer, urethane-covered golf balls.

Andrade credited the win with resurrecting his career. “I remember I was not having a very good year entering that event,” he said. “I was around 160th on the money list and there were only a few events left. I had already sent my check in for qualifying school. I was desperate. I vividly remember the first time I put it into play during a practice round. The ball was 20 yards longer than the Tour Prestige I was playing at the time. I chalked some of it up to altitude, but the distance, in addition to the overall performance of the ball, was like nothing I had ever played.”

Since that time the adoption from tour pros and sustained play with the ball over time has been unlike anything the industry has seen. From the 2000 Invensys Classic through last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship, Pro V1 and Pro V1x models have been played in competition on the PGA Tour more than 97,000 times, greater than six times the nearest competitor’s total ball count, according to Darrell Survey.

Despite scant details, this latest Pro V1, like previous models, is a three-piece multilayer ball (single core, mantle layer and cover) and the new Pro V1x is a four-piece multilayer ball (dual core, mantle layer and cover). From photos provided by the company, the sidestamp has solid-black arrows pointing in two directions. Another detail given that ball’s history is this: expect a number of players to switch over—and quickly.

Some guys have all the luck. The phrase “Holy Grail of Golf Goodwill Hauls” might seem like a bit of an exaggeration, but that’s before you see the deal of all deals that this golfer got on a set of Titleist clubs. It’s time for the rest of us to start scavenging our local Goodwills for even 1/100th of what this individual was able to find.

Holy Grail of Golf Goodwill Hauls
byu/Kobblur ingolf

“Me and my buddy came across a full set (8) of t100’s, three Titleist wedges, and a Titleist hybrid while looking for t-shirts at the goodwill near where we work,” said Kobblur on r/golf. “They were marked at $2.99 for each club, which we ended up buying and taking to the Golf Galaxy 5 minutes away. They offered us $410 in-store credit for all the clubs but I believe we could easily get around double?”

It’s quite the deal, and fellow Redditors have started guessing that a divorce or death is the reason for this stash making it to Goodwill. A commenter who made a similar find said as much about his beloved putter: “I got my white hot 2 ball putter from goodwill and it was 100% from an old guy that kicked the can. I saw his shoes, polos and clubs throughout the store. Kind of weird now to think of it.”

Maybe the Golf Gods would be happy that the clubs made it into the hands of a fellow golfer? Just trying to be optimistic here. The Reddit commenters, however, forced the original poster’s hand, and he eventually dropped the receipt for all the nonbelievers.

$17.94 before tax… It’s not getting any better than this. The moral of the story here is that we all have to make a daily pilgrimage now to nearby thrift stores and hope that we find something.

As a kid, I used to steal my dad’s Vokey wedges – that’s how obsessed I was with the Titleist brand. I just love how they feel and the performance in the club for me. I’ve always played a Titleist ball, so I’m pretty much a Titleist girl!

DRIVER

SPECS: Titleist TSR 4 – 10° – shaft ACCRA TZ Six

I have played this since it came out and it’s just a match made in heaven. Look wise, feel wise, it’s always been the best for me. I actually have the same shaft in my driver, and fairway woods which is a strange set up, different weights though.

FAIRWAY WOODS

I have a three wood and a seven wood. Some people are surprised that I actually have a seven wood. Safe to say it’s the favourite club in my bag.

HYBRID

SPECS: Titleist TSR 2 – 24° – Fujikura Ventus Blue HB

This hybrid replaces my four iron. It’s just more forgiving than having to hit a long iron, plus out the rough it’s super.

These T100 irons are actually forged with a dual-cavity, this therefore gives me a more solid feel at impact.

WEDGES

I’m obsessed with these wedges, ever since I grew up all I wanted was Vokey wedges and that’s why I used to always practice with my dad’s ones – I eventually had to get my own!

SPECS: Titleist Scotty Cameron Super Select Fastback 1.5; P2 grip

I have putted with this since 2020, so this is the start of it’s fourth year with me. I love this putter. This one is a circle T, which I got when I won in Jeddah, so it means a lot to me and is very special.

HOME COMFORT

Much was made during the week that Robert MacIntyre had his father on the bag at the RBC Canadian Open. The son made his papa more than proud by remaining steadfast during the final round and notching his first PGA Tour win in what seemed like a walk, but ended up being a nailbiter.

MacIntyre dropped a 10-footer on No. 7 for birdie and followed that with a staked tee shot at the 193-yard, par-3 eighth to three feet for another birdie. At the 11th a 22-footer fell for another birdie, stretching the lead to five shots before things got interesting.

A pair of bogeys at 12 and 13 and a three-birdie binge from 15 through 17 from Ben Griffin cut the margin to one, but MacIntyre held on for the win, annoying those who put a few dollars on Griffin to win at 30-1 odds on the 11th hole.

It’s not often a winner ranks outside the top 25 in both strokes gained/off the tee and approach to the green (29th and 44th, respectively), but MacIntyre came up big around and on the greens.

Ranking first in strokes gained/putting, the Scot was a remarkable 11-plus strokes better than the field average for the week. Of course it doesn’t hurt when you’re making 106 feet worth of putts per round, second in the field. MacIntyre’s putter is TaylorMade’s Spider Tour T3 mallet, a model similar to that used by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Around the greens he was served well by his Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges, ranking eighth in strokes gained while getting up and down 14 of 21 times.

Our broad range of Hot List player testers reveal the clubs that worked best for them. Find the player who fits your game

By Mike Stachura and E Michael Johnson
What do real golfers like you think about the latest clubs? That’s why our panel of players is such a key part of our process. Together, they provide input that helps the Hot List judges determine the leading clubs in Performance and Look/Sound/Feel, two of our four Hot List criteria which together account for 65 percent of a club’s score.

But we know you want as much specific advice as you can get about what club is exactly right for you. So why not see which of our players matches best to your game and see what they were thinking. What follows are some of the top choices in each of our full swing categories from each player on our panel, choices that are informed by data from the Rapsodo MLM and GCQuad launch monitors. Certainly, you’ll see a lot of repeats as you go through these lists (that’s why those products tended to do well on the Hot List overall), but consider this another piece of information as you continue the search for the right club for you. Of course, we firmly believe that search needs the wisdom of a good clubfitter to finish the process, too. Each player’s basic data is listed below, along with their individual lists and accompanying swing videos from the Rapsodo MLM app.
