The world’s best golfers over the age of 50 headed to Sunningdale Golf Club last week for the 39th edition of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open.

All of the reigning Senior Major champions were in action with Angel Cabrera, Pádraig Harrington and Miguel Ángel Jiménez joining K.J. Choi in teeing it up. Four-time winner and 12-time Senior Major champion Bernhard Langer was also in the field alongside Welshman Stephen Dodd, who lifted the trophy the last time the event was held here.

Add in a further 14 winners of The Open, Masters, U.S. Open and US PGA Championship, along with numerous Ryder Cup players and Captains and it was a recipe for a memorable week.

The prize purse for the 2025 edition was $2,850,000, with the winner taking home over $400,000.

Padraig Harrington’s career needs no burnishing, given that he’s already in the World Golf Hall of Fame, yet he continues to augment it in a major way, this time by winning the ISPS HANDA Senior Open on Sunday.

The victory was his second senior major this year, coming a month after he won the U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Harrington shot 67-65-65-67 for a 16-under 264 total at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England, and won by three over Justin Leonard and Thomas Bjorn.

“One of the things that myself and my caddie talk about a lot as you get older you reflect on your wins and where you win,” he said at the trophy presentation. “Winning here at Sunningdale is very special. It’s really nice to win at the great venues of golf.”

RELATED: Here’s the prize money breakdown for each golfer at the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open

Harrington has built his Hall of Fame resume on his performances on the game’s biggest stages. He won three major championships—two British Opens and a PGA Championship—in a two-year span in 2007 and 2008, and was ranked as high as third in the world ranking in the midst of Tiger Woods’ dominance.

This latest victory, his 11th on the PGA Tour Champions, was his third senior major championship, adding to a record that also includes a U.S. Senior Open victory in 2022. In addition to his two senior majors in 2025, he also tied for second in the Senior PGA Championship.

Moreover, he became only the fifth player in history to have won both the Open and Senior Open, joining Bob Charles, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Darren Clarke.

“I’m thrilled to have won, but very satisfied that I’ve won a Senior Open with my two Opens,” he said. “The fact that only five people have ever done it is quite special. I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to survive this long in the game. Longevity, at this stage, I think we look for a lot of things about our legacy in the game. The fact that I’m only the fifth person to have done that double, that’s pretty special.”

Harrington took a two-stroke lead into the final round, notwithstanding the fact that he was not comfortable with his swing. “I don’t feel very good about how I’m hitting the ball,” he said after Saturday’s round. “So trying to get away from that and not worry so much about that because clearly I’m scoring well. Better off shooting 13 under par and not feeling so good about it than thinking you’re swinging it great and being level par.”

He remained dissatisfied with his swing on the practice tee ahead of the final round.

“I really had a bad warmup, like really bad, again,” he said. “And I just think when you go out like that, you are prepared to get the job done with wherever the ball goes. You’re going to hit the shot. Your expectations go down. I managed myself very well. I tried to swing the smoothest, slowest I could all day. Just tried to really swing within myself. Just try to tone it down and as I said just get around it.

“I happened to play quite well as it turned out. I didn’t over think it when I was on the golf course. I hit some beautiful iron shots to start off. So yeah, it worked very nicely but I was prepared for a fight to be honest, and I was surprised I probably played as well as I did. But there was a little bit of turmoil in my own head at times.”

It isn’t supposed to be easy, of course, but en route to completing the Open-Senior Open double, he made it look easy, an historic 18-hole victory lap.

Major champions, Ryder Cup legends and icons of the game return to Berkshire for the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open.

The legends of the game return to the UK’s golfing heartland this week, as the ISPS HANDA Senior Open touches down at one of the world’s most well-regarded inland layouts — the Old Course at Sunningdale Golf Club.

From 24–27 July, a world-class field of Major winners and Ryder Cup stars will gather to contest Europe’s only Senior Major Championship.

Following a dramatic 2024 edition at Carnoustie, where K.J. Choi made history as the first South Korean to capture a Senior Major title, the focus now shifts south of the border to Berkshire.

Choi will return to defend his crown on a course steeped in tradition and having already committed to a rare double — playing both The Open at Royal Portrush the week prior, and then defending his title at Sunningdale.

Joining the 2024 champion in the field are a host of ISPS HANDA Ambassadors Thomas Bjørn, Ernie Els, Pádraig Harrington and Colin Montgomerie. They will be joined by four-time winner of The Senior Open, Bernhard Langer, the most decorated senior player in history, who recently brought his Masters career to a close at Augusta National. Langer will make his 17th consecutive appearance in this championship, having never finished worse than T12. He was in fact runner-up the last time this event was played at Sunningdale.

First played in 1987, The ISPS HANDA Senior Open has been held on some of the United Kingdom’s most celebrated and historic courses. Sunningdale first hosted the Championship in 2009, when American Loren Roberts defeated compatriot Fred Funk and Irishman Mark McNulty in a play-off.

Designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1901, Sunningdale’s Old Course is a classic heathland golf course. With pine tree-lined fairways, tracks of purple heather, and elevation changes, it is widely regarded as one of the finest inland courses on the planet.

Originally built on land owned by St. John’s College, Cambridge, Park’s design was a revelation at the time, showcasing how inland layouts could rival links courses in challenge and character. His architectural style is visible throughout the Old’s routing, bunkering, and signature undulating greens — features that reward both creativity and precision.

Later refined by Harry Colt, who relocated several greens including the now-iconic 4th, 7th and 12th, the course has stood the test of time without reliance on length. Instead, it demands strategic placement, shot shaping, and a deft touch on and around the greens.

Located just 45 minutes from central London and set amidst the rolling Berkshire countryside, Sunningdale offers a quintessentially English golf experience — charming, understated luxury paired with tradition-rich hospitality. With its ivy-clad clubhouse, panoramic terrace views, and admiration for the game, the club embodies everything great about British
golf heritage.

The 2025 edition of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open promises to deliver another unforgettable chapter in Senior Major Championship history.

Key Holes

David Cannon Getty Images

10th Hole
Par 4 — 488 yards
One of the toughest holes on the course, this long two-shotter plays uphill with a slight left-to-right shape. Deep fairway bunkers and a green that slopes from back to front make this a true test of distance control. The view of the hole from the Half Way Hut, behind the tee box, is something to treasure.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-101131" class="size-full wp-image-101131" src="https://golfdigestme.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Sunningdale-GC-18th-par-4-David-Cannon-GettyImages-1237681703.jpg" alt="Sunningdale Golf Club - 18th par 4.
18th Hole
Par 4 — 423 yards
A magnificent finishing hole framed by pines and heather. Accuracy off the tee is vital to avoid the fairway bunkers, leaving a mid-iron into a contoured green sitting below the historic clubhouse. It’s a hole worthy of crowning a champion with the Clubhouse and iconic Oak Tree at the back of the green.

Former ISPS HANDA Senior Open winners Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenéz and two-time Masters Tournament champion José María Olazábal are the latest stars confirmed for this year’s Championship, which returns to Sunningdale next month, from July 24-27.

Some of golf’s most renowned names are set to tee it up on the Old Course when Europe’s only Senior Major returns to the famed Berkshire venue. Sunningdale will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time in its history, following on from 2009, 2015 and 2021.

The trio join defending champion K.J. Choi, record 12-time Senior Major Champion Bernhard Langer, Major Champions Pádraig Harrington and Ernie Els and European legends Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjørn in what promises to be a star-studded field.

Darren Clarke understandably was smiling after becoming just the fourth golfer to win the Open and Senior Open as he wins the Senior Open at Gleneagles. Mark Runnacles

In 2022, Clarke became the fourth player to win both The Open and The Senior Open when he triumphed at Gleneagles, finishing one stroke ahead of Pádraig Harrington. Clarke won The Claret Jug at Royal St George’s in 2011, becoming the first Northern Irish winner of The Open in more than 60 years.

The 56-year-old finished third the last time the Senior Open was held at Sunningdale, just two strokes behind eventual winner Stephen Dodd.

“I’m very proud to have won both The Open and The Senior Open and I’m very much looking forward to going back to Sunningdale this Summer,” said Clarke. “It’s fantastic that the Senior Open gives us the opportunity to play on a number of the best courses in the country and the Old Course at Sunningdale is certainly a worthy test.”

Miguel Angel Jimenéz lifted the trophy in 2018.

Jiménez claimed The Senior Open trophy in style in 2018 as he triumphed on the Old Course at St Andrews. It was his second Senior Major Championship and earlier this month he won his 16th title on PGA TOUR Champions at the Principal Charity Classic. He was runner-up to Dodd four years ago at Sunningdale.

“The Senior Open is a very special event to me and I’m so proud to call myself a winner of the Championship,” said Jiménez. “I’ve been wanting to go back to Sunningdale since my runner-up finish there a few years ago and I’m hopeful I can go one better in a few weeks’ time.”

José María Olazábal captured the Masters on two occasions.

Olázabal, who won the Masters Tournament in 1994 and 1999, will be making his eighth appearance at The Senior Open. The Spaniard formed a formidable Ryder Cup partnership with the legendary Seve Ballesteros as they returned 12 points from 15 matches together across four editions. He went on to captain Europe in 2012 as he masterminded the Miracle at Medinah, seeing his side overturn a four-point deficit on the final day to win 14½ – 13½.

“I’m excited to return to Sunningdale next month,” said Olazábal. “The Senior Open is a great event and one which we all look forward to playing in.”

ISPS HANDA Ambassadors Thomas Bjørn, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie are the latest players confirmed for the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open, which will return to the Old Course at Sunningdale this summer from July 23-27.

The trio join three-time Major Champion and fellow ISPS HANDA Ambassador Pádraig Harrington in the field, which will include a host of Major winners, Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players and former champions from the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

ISPS HANDA, founded by the Japanese philanthropist Dr. Haruhisa Handa, was recently announced as the new title partner of The Senior Open. The organisation is a long-term partner of professional and amateur golf, promoting the ethos that sport has the power to unite and inspire communities around the world.

Sunningdale will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time in its history, following on from the 2009, 2015 and 2021 editions.

Colin Montgomerie

Montgomerie was the dominant force in European golf during the 1990s, winning a record seven consecutive Order of Merits from 1993 to 1999 and then adding an eighth in 2005. The Scotsman made eight appearances in the Ryder Cup and captained Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010. He won 31 times on the DP World Tour and has 13 over-50s titles, including three Senior Major Championships.

“The Old Course at Sunningdale is an excellent test of golf and we are all looking forward to returning there later this year,” said Montgomerie. “It’s always a pleasure playing in front of fans in the United Kingdom and they are in for a real treat this summer. The standard of golf in the over-50s game is so high, so the stage is set for a special week.”

Ernie Els – Ross Kinnaird

Former World Number One and four-time Major Champion Els made his Senior Open debut at Sunningdale in 2021, finishing in a share of eighth. Els made eight appearances for the International side at the Presidents Cup and captained the team in 2019. The South African has won seven times on PGA TOUR Champions, including his first Senior Major victory at last year’s Kaulig Companies Championship.

“I’m really excited for this year’s ISPS HANDA Senior Open,” said Els. “Sunningdale is an incredible venue and it would mean a lot to me to get a win so close to my home at Wentworth. My game is in good shape, and I hope to carry that form into the Senior Open in July.”

Captain Thomas Bjorn of Europe holds the Ryder Cup with his European team after a lopsided win at Le Golf National in 2018 – Christian Petersen

Bjørn is Denmark’s most successful golfer in history, winning 15 times on the DP World Tour and captaining Europe to a victory at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. He also made three appearances in golf’s greatest team contest, being a member of the winning side on each occasion. The 54-year-old is a regular fixture on PGA TOUR Champions and has recorded 11 top ten finishes in the United States since the start of last season.

“It’s great having ISPS HANDA on board as Title Partner of this wonderful Championship,” said Bjørn. “I’ve only had the chance to play in The Senior Open a couple of times, but the standard is so high, you really have to be on your game to compete at this level.”

Three-time Major Champion Harrington, who won The Open in 2007 and 2008 and the US PGA Championship in 2008, has finished inside the top five in three appearances at the Senior Open. He was runner-up on his first two appearances and finished fifth at Carnoustie last year.

“Sunningdale is a fantastic golf course and I’m looking forward to seeing the challenge it presents us with a Senior Open setup,” said Harrington. “I’ve had a few close calls in this Championship so far and would love to be in contention again going down the stretch.”

It’s official. Catriona Matthew is now the most successful captain of Old World golf teams—male or female—in trans-atlantic competition. Tony Jacklin led Europe to two successive Ryder Cup victories in 1985 and 1987 and followed that with a draw against the United States in 1989. But that best is now previous.

After skippering Europe to two Solheim Cup wins in 2019 and 2021, Matthew completed her hat-trick of winning captaincies as Great Britain & Ireland’s women amateurs saw off their American counterparts at Sunningdale 10½ to 9½ to claim the Curtis Cup for the first time since 2016.

“This is just as special as any of the others,” said Matthew. “It’s all the same emotions. Any time you captain a team and represent your country, there is no bigger honour. I had a fantastic team. They all played well. And they all contributed. You can’t win these things with one or two players you need everyone to play well. We had a great week. They were relaxed and they enjoyed it. They played some amazing golf, as did the Americans. They gave us a real battle. We knew they would come out strong today and they did. But this team dug deep. I couldn’t be happier for them.”

Matthew’s enthusiasm was far from misplaced. This was a raucous last day of classic match play acted out in front of large crowds on one of the world’s great courses and in beautiful weather befitting such an occasion. Adding to that almost perfect scenario, the shifts in scoreboard supremacy kept on coming, the lead bobbing and weaving, to and fro, all afternoon. Perhaps only one thing was certain throughout; the winning and losing—or halving—of the 43rd Curtis Cup was only going to occur in the aftermath of a tight finish.

Oisin Keniry/R&A

And so it proved to be. Needing 3½ points from the eight final day singles, GB&I stumbled early, recovered somewhat, then crossed the finishing line with a late dip at the tape. Seconds before University of Stirling graduate Lorna McClymont (the only member of the home side not at college in the States) closed out Megan Schofill on the 16th green in Game 7, England’s Mimi Rhodes holed from 20-feet for a half on the 17th to stay 1 up on Melanie Green in Game 5, guaranteed the clinching half-point. That Green would go on to win the final hole only served to halve the eventual margin of victory from two points to one.

“To be fair, I didn’t really know what was going on,” said McClymont. “I could hear the crowds building though, so I had an idea my match meant something.”

Rhodes, was just as nonplussed, which is no bad thing in such a pressure-filled situation.

“I didn’t even think about the putt on 17 being for par,” she said. “I was just so focused on making it, to a point where I wasn’t as nervous as I might have been. I saw the line. I saw it going in. And I knew it would make me a lot more comfortable going down 18.”

The moment that sealed victory for Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup courtesy of Mimi Rhodes pic.twitter.com/Y1dAhDqtNC

All of which was mildly surprising. Coming into these matches, the theory was that the home side would need the best player within their ranks, World No. 1 Lottie Woad, to play on a level commensurate with her elite ranking if victory was to be achieved. And she did, albeit the 20-year-old Englishwoman won only one full point. Three halved matches surrounded her lone four-ball victory and a singles defeat to Asterisk Talley.

“I was really excited to be first off against Lottie,” said Talley, the second youngest U.S. Curtis Cup player in history after Michelle Wie. “I called my mom last night and she was asking why I got the hardest person. I was like, ‘thanks mum.’ I knew I would have to make lots of birdies. And I did that, without making too many mistakes.”

Indeed, there was no great shame in any of the above for Woad, who was under par when the pair shook hands on the 16th green. The five birdies and an eagle that dotted Talley’s metaphorical scorecard illustrated only too well the potency of the 15-year-old’s performance. Still, that GB&I didn’t need more in terms of points from their leader only underlined the depth of the home team.

There was also some irony to be had within the one-point “loss” GB&I suffered in the singles. The only member of the home team who was on zero going into the final day, Patience Rhodes, turned out to be its biggest final-day winner, 6 and 5 over Zoe Campos. The home star, however, was Sara Byrne. After leaning on Woad’s formidable talents in the foursomes and four-balls, the 23-year-old Irishwoman made six birdies and an eagle in seeing off the redoubtable Catherine Park, 3&2.

Sara Byrne celebrates winning her match during the Sunday singles at the Curtis Cup – Oisin Keniry/R&A

“I don’t have words to explain this week,” said Byrne, who will turn professional in three days. “It has been the best week of my life. This is a very special feeling to end my amateur career like this. I’m not sure it has all settled in yet, although when I went 3-up on 15 I did think that was me unbeaten for the week. But that was only for a second. I knew I had to get a full point, not just a half. I locked back in quickly.”

As for the Americans, captain Meghan Stasi was predictably philosophical in the wake of what was a tough defeat. There was pride too though.

“It was a fight from Day 1, Round 1,” she acknowledged. “My guys stepped up. Nothing was easy out there and we had a lot of players new to the Curtis Cup. It’s amazing what they accomplished. The standard of play was incredible. What the fans brought and what the girls brought made this a great occasion. We lost to birdies and even eagles sometimes. The course had a lot to do with that. Sunningdale was set-up perfectly and presented a great challenge, one that was great for match play.”

For the stat geeks, there were even some scoring quirks to pour over. All 16 players scored at least a half-point. Despite regaining the cup, only half of the GB&I team—the Celtic quartet (two Scots, two Irish) of Aine Donegan, Sara Byrne, Lorna McClymont and Hannah Darling—emerged with winning records. That feat was achieved by only three members of the losing side—Talley, Jasmine Koo and Rachel Kuehn.

Appropriately though, the last words must go to Matthew.

“No one remembers individual records,” insisted the modest Scot. “This was a team affair.”

Advice, especially the good stuff, is always useful when it comes to playing golf in unfamiliar territory or conditions. Knowing that obvious truism only too well, both sides in the Curtis Cup at Sunningdale are taking advantage of those with experience in the run-up to what will be the 43rd meeting between the best female amateurs from Great Britain & Ireland and those from the United States.

For the visitors, most of the most helpful insight is coming from inside the tight-knit squad. With seven of the eight players Curtis Cup rookies, it goes without saying that the youthful Americans are leaning heavily on non-playing captain Meghan Stasi. As Meghan Bolger, Stasi was a member of the winning U.S. team at St. Andrews in 2008. But soon-to-be three-time Curtis Cupper Rachel Kuehn (whose mother, Brenda, represented the U.S. in 1996 and 1998), is another useful sounding board.

“We go to [Kuehn] with any questions as someone that’s played in three,” says teammate Megan Schofill. “It’s great to have Rachel to kind of give us that confidence and kind of tell us exactly how it’s going to be and what to expect.”

As for the home side, some big names have been part of the build-up to what they hope will be a first victory in this biennial contest since 2016. Two weeks ago, Sam Torrance, a Sunningdale member and former European Ryder Cup captain, spent a day with the squad. Breakfast on the eve of the matches was shared with former U.S. Open champion, Justin Rose, another Sunningdale member. And that left time for one last evening pep-talk from another former Ryder Cup skipper in Colin Montgomerie.

“I know the sort of feelings the girls are having,” Rose said while watching during the practice round on Thursday. “These team events are different from even the high-level events they play in as individuals. They feel different. A lot of people will be here. There will be a lot of energy. So any tips on what to be aware of can come in handy. The big thing is just to enjoy it.”

An extra person for breakfast in the Great Britain and Ireland team room this morning @RandA | @JustinRose99 pic.twitter.com/ahwkqqhd7n

— Curtis Cup (@CurtisCup) August 29, 2024

One thing the GB&I team will want to avoid, however, is the result of a story Rose told on himself. As a 17-year-old, the Englishman was part of the 1997 Walker Cup side at Quaker Ridge in New York. On the first morning he hit the opening tee shot in the second foursomes match. And he hit it out-of-bounds.

“I hope the girls all do better than I did,” he said with a smile. “I’m sure they will. The team seem relaxed and all in a great spot. The good thing about match play, of course, is that I only lost that one hole before moving on.”

One last thing on the advice front. Even some of those employed to advise the GB&I side are getting advice. The caddies for both teams are locals, all well familiar with the foibles of the Sunningdale course. Equally, however, none spend too much of their working lives carrying the bags of players who perform as well as their employers this week. Which has prompted Great Britain & Ireland assistant captain Karen Stupples to call for a “caddie chat” on the eve of the matches. The aim is to make sure all are on the same page as to the particular characteristics, needs and wants of golfers at this elite level.

The game might still be amateur, but the approach from both sides is nothing but professional.

Is playing too much golf a bad thing? Apparently, at one famed UK golf club, it is.

According to the UK Times, the exclusive Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire is being sued by a former member who says he was kicked out for teeing it up too often. The membership of John Cawood, a 72-year-old Australian, was revoked in 2015 for allegedly playing more than 30 rounds per year.

Cawood claims he hasn’t played that much golf since 2006.

“The club has a perceived idea that I play regularly over 30 times, but it’s not true,” Cawood said in court Tuesday.

“The last time I played over 30 rounds was in 2006, and I paid a pro-rata rate per game.”

Considering Cawood is a lawyer, he must think he has a pretty good case against the exclusive club, whose membership includes Sean Connery and Hugh Grant.

If you’re thinking, 30 rounds of golf isn’t that much, we’re right with you. However, there’s more to the story. The main complaint seems to be that Cawood, who spends the majority of the year in Australia, plays that much despite paying for a discounted overseas membership that costs about $1,500.

The full membership costs nearly $5,000. Either way, considering Sunningdale was No. 12 on Golf Digest’s most recent ranking of the World’s 100 Greatest Courses, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
