When the last putt dropped, the one that beat him, Scottie Scheffler glanced at his caddie Ted Scott, raised his eyebrows and tilted his head. It was a look that seemed to suggest that the No. 1 player in the world was mighty impressed.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2026 RBC Heritage

Which says all you need to know about Matt Fitzpatrick’s playoff victory over Scheffler on Sunday at the RBC Heritage.

After flubbing a chip shot on the 72nd hole that enabled Scheffler to complete a rally from three shots down with four to play, Fitzpatrick collected himself to deliver an epic 4-iron that set up a winning 13-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole for his second win in five weeks and second victory at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Fitzpatrick also won the signature event in Hilton Head, S.C., in 2023, making him the first foreign-born player to win the event twice. He is the second player, after Chris Gotterup, with two PGA Tour titles this season after a victory last month at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. He earned $3.6 million with his fourth career tour victory.

“It means the world. It means the world,” Fitzpatrick repeated when asked about winning a second time at a place where he used to visit with his parents and brother for vacations. “This is a tournament I wanted to win growing up, arguably more than any of the majors before I understood about the game. To win it twice means the world. To go out today and go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line there on the 73rd [hole] is special.”

Scheffler was relegated to runner-up behind a European player for the second week in a row after losing by a stroke to Rory McIlroy at the Masters. Yet again the talented Texan, who suffered only three bogeys all week, was forced to embark on a furious weekend rally to get into contention only to come up just shy again. Scheffler was 11 under par the final two days, including a closing four-under 67, for an 18-under 266 total. Fitzpatrick shot a final-round 70.

“I think in both weeks I put myself behind the eight-ball going into the weekend and had really nice Saturdays and Sundays in order to get myself into contention,” said Scheffler, who has finished in the top 25 in 29 straight starts. “On Sunday it’s a shot here or there that makes a difference. This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen. He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf.”

He played with resilience. Or, as he said himself, “a lot of grit.”

“I knew Scottie was going to make some birdies down the stretch, and I kind of had to hang in there a little bit,” Fitzpatrick said.

His play of late has been quite impressive considering that his two wins have come after a 72nd hole bogey at the Players Championship relegated him to second place behind Cameron Young. There had to be a feeling of déjà vu at Harbour Town as Scheffler began to surge over the closing holes and the pro-American gallery began pulling for their countryman, a scenario Fitzpatrick encountered playing beside Young at TPC Sawgrass.

https://twiter.com/PGATOUR/status/2045989969265672404

Still clinging to a one-stroke lead, Fitzpatrick missed the green long and right on the par-4 18th hole, but it looked like he might escape when Scheffler missed the green in almost the same spot. Each faced pitch shots of just over 69 feet, and Scheffler, hitting first, coaxed his effort to less than a foot from the hole. Playing quickly, Fitzpatrick, who chips cross-handed, didn’t hit his recovery nearly hard enough, leaving himself a putt of 22 feet for the win. He missed the right-to-left putt on the low side, setting up overtime at the Heritage for the fourth time in five years.

Of course, Fitzpatrick thrives in extra holes at Harbour Town. He defeated another Texas product, Jordan Spieth, in a playoff three years ago when his 9-iron approach into 18 on the third extra hole checked up less than a foot from the cup. This time, the 4-iron he carved into the wind from 204 yards was more impressive. His right hand came off the grip in the follow through, but the ball tracked at the flagstick, landed a few yards in front of the cup and came to rest 13 feet behind it.

He admitted in the aftermath that he pulled that shot slightly.

Scheffler fanned his approach from 186 yards well short of the green but pitched his third to eight feet. He didn’t have to hit again as Fitzpatrick rolled in the left-to-right downhiller for birdie and the title. That’s when Scheffler delivered that knowing look to Scott.

At almost the same time, Fitzpatrick was playfully putting his hand to his ear, listening for the crowd reaction. This time, the former U.S. Open winner sent American fans home disappointed. Sounds were muted along Calibogue Sound.

The man who carries a headcover featuring the iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse behind the 18th green became the 11th player to win the Heritage multiple times.

Tracy Wilcox

“Obviously, absolutely delighted. To do it the way I did was special,” said Fitzpatrick, whose wife Katherine is expecting the couple’s first child in July. “Yeah, it’s tough to put into words. The 18th hole was playing so different today compared to the first three days. It was quite funny that the playoff was just going to keep playing on 18. I was thinking it was going difficult in a way to separate ourselves because it’s such a difficult hole.”

Fitzpatrick also took satisfaction from winning in front of a boisterous crowd pulling for his opponent. That’s something he got a taste of the Ryder Cup last fall in New York.

“It didn’t get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great,” he said. “I’m all for it. I love the people; they’re supporting Scottie. That’s great. You want golf to have an atmosphere, in my opinion. I grew up watching football. I’m paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds, having them chanting at you every week. It’s great feeling. However, there’s no better feeling than coming out on top against that. There isn’t a better feeling.”

No, there probably isn’t.

The Project has turned out to produce some mighty impressive results.

Yes, that was Kurt Kitayama’s nickname in college while at UNLV because those around the program saw his potential but knew his game needed a lot of work. That nickname followed him early in his professional career as it took a while for him to gain his footing. The now 32-year-old from California competed on 10 tours around the world for eight years before earning a PGA Tour card for the 2022 season.

That Project name can be officially put to bed, if it wasn’t already. Kitayama won the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational in his 50th PGA Tour start—holding off the likes of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler.

This week at the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, the man who was outside the top 100 in FedEx Cup standings to start the week made the cut by only two shots, then went berserk over the weekend with rounds of 60-65 to shoot 23-under 261 and top Sam Stevens by a shot.

After shooting the Saturday 60, which was nearly a 59, Kitayama opened the final round with birdies on five of the first six holes to take control. He shot 57 on the front side combined on the weekend (28-29) and made 20 total birdies in two days to thrill the gallery in Blaine, Minn.

Although there were some nervy moments down the stretch, Kitayama held sturdy, used a laser approach game and walked away with the $1.512 million first prize. He’s now 53rd in FedEx Cup points and is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs when they begin in two weeks in Memphis.

“I just think I was in control of my irons, especially getting off to the start today was my wedges got me into those positions,” Kitayama said. “I hit them tight. Kind of trusted that early on and took advantage of the shorter holes with the wedges. You know, you don’t expect to come out like that after shooting 11 under, and to come out like that was special.”

Kurt Kitayama reacts to his winning putt with his caddie and brother Daniel behind him. Andrew Wevers

Making this week more special for Kitayama was having his older brother Daniel on the bag for only the second time this year. Daniel said that the highlight of his week was watching his younger brother grind to make the cut then nearly shoot golf’s magic number on Saturday. They’ll get to spend more time together now as Kurt said there’s no chance he’s going to mess with a winning combination.

Kurt Kitayama said after the victory that he believed something like this was in the offing. He believed in his preparation, he knew he was working on the right things, and he knew that results were sure to follow. He just wasn’t always sure when they would come, whether it would be before or after the regular season ended.

Thankfully for him they came just in time. There were so many shots that were key on Sunday but two in particular, both from bunkers, immediately spring to mind. Kitayama found a right fairway bunker on the dogleg left par-4 14th hole. He was 192 yards out and opted to take a 7-iron and fire at the pin even though it meant his ball needed to travel over water. He hit it to two feet and made birdie to take a three-shot lead with four holes remaining.

Shot of the day

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 27, 2025

Then on the par-5 home hole, with everything on the line, Kitayama found a bunker back, right of the green. Facing a downhill lie, with an awkward stance, he blasted out to 17 feet and two putted to win.

For the week Kitayama led the field in strokes gained/approach, gaining nearly 10 shots on the field for the week.

“I think just what I’ve been working on is starting to kind of show overall,” said Kitayama, who only had two top-10 finishes this season. “I feel like my ball-striking kind of dipped a little bit earlier this year and now it’s starting to come into form, I think. That’s kind of been—last year I felt like I hit it really well and my putting kind of let me down last year. Now it’s starting to feel a lot better, starting to see some results there. That’s been the last probably month or two months that I’ve kind of noticed.”

Stevens was Kitayama’s closest pursuer in the end, although there was a time earlier in the round when there were 10 players within a shot of the lead. The 29-year-old Texan was looking for his first PGA Tour title and shot consecutive 66s on the weekend. However, he did not birdie the par-5 18th hole either day, something that cost him a chance on Sunday.

“I’m not too disappointed,” Stevens said. “I would have liked to have had a chance to go for it on 18. That’s a pretty tough driving hole and I hit a pretty good drive. Just kind of overcut it just a little bit. But yeah, over all I’m very pleased. I needed a good finish here in the last couple weeks to kind of move solidly inside the top 50, which is a big deal for next year, and I would think that I’m in a good spot for that now. Now I’m in the top 30 in the FedEx Cup. I’m happy about that. You know, get to tee it up again next week and give it another crack, so that’s good.”

Sam Stevens (left) and Jake Knapp shake hands on the last hole Sunday at TPC Twin Cities. David Berding

Jake Knapp was another who came to 18 with aspirations of doing something dramatic. He was only 196 yards from the green and hit what he thought was the perfect approach shot for an eagle chance. He could not believe it when the ball found a watery grave, ending his hopes of a second PGA Tour title and pushing him down and into a third-place tie when he ultimately made bogey.

“Obviously that second shot on 18 sucks,” he said. “I thought it was pretty perfect, to be honest. Other than that I feel like I hit it really solid. Even got just kind of a couple unfortunate bounces that either ended up just off the fairway in the rough or maybe just around the greens in the rough and did a good job of kind of grinding out, and gave myself some good looks on 15 and 16, wasn’t able to make them, but yeah, overall just a solid week.”

The biggest disappointment on Sunday came from the two men who actually held the lead standing on the first tee at TPC Twin Cities. Akshay Bhatia and Thorbjorn Olesen were co-leaders looking to make some noise. Bhatia was not pleased with his season to this point and Olesen was looking for his first PGA Tour title after winning eight times in Europe.

But both men played some of the worst golf of the day. Bhatia, a two-time tour winner, bogeyed three of his first four holes and shot a front-nine 39 en route to a 75 and a 25th-place tie. Olesen made three front-nine bogeys and shot a two-over 73 to tie for 14th place.

They were the only two players who finished inside the top 25 to shoot over par in the final round.

In the hours after he was named the PGA Tour’s first CEO on Tuesday, Brian Rolapp walked around the driving range at TPC River Highlands. Dressed in a grey suit, the former NFL chief media and business officer introduced himself to as many players as he could, marking the start of a seismic shift in the PGA Tour’s leadership structure.

Though Rolapp hasn’t had the time to meet nearly everyone—including World Nos. 1 and 2 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy—he will in the coming weeks as he begins to take over day-to-day duties from PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan later this summer. In the early days, Rolapp has already received praise from several notable tour pros. Ahead of the opening round of the Travelers Championship on Thursday, Scheffler, McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Keegan Bradley all expressed excitement over his hire when speaking with the media. Among the things that’ve stood out to four of the tour’s brightest stars: Rolapp has an impressive background, and he’s said all the right things.

“I think he seems like a steal from the most successful sports organisation in the world and someone who was on the path to becoming potentially commissioner over there, to coming over and taking the PGA Tour forward,” said Spieth, who met Rolapp on Tuesday.

Having spent the last 22 years with the NFL, Rolapp was seen by some as a potential successor to Roger Goodell whenever his tenure as commissioner ended. However, he said at his press conference on Tuesday that he couldn’t turn down the PGA Tour’s “unique” opportunity.

Despite Rolapp’s impressive background, he has limited golf experience; he said he plays around eight to 10 rounds a year and wouldn’t disclose his handicap. When Scheffler was asked whether tour membership is on board with bringing someone from outside of the golf world in, he didn’t express that it was a negative.

“I liked what I got to hear yesterday, so I would assume that’s pretty much the opinion of most people in the room,” Scheffler said. “There definitely wasn’t anybody grumbling or shouting or anything like that, so it seemed like all good news.”

Even without golf experience, Spieth mentioned Rolapp brings a wealth of experience to the Tour. And alongside it, the three-time major winner added Rolapp is “super open to learning more about golf and the PGA Tour’s business and the product itself from those that know more about it until he gets caught up.”

What Rolapp is fully caught up on has McIlory excited. The career Grand Slam winner noted Rolapp helped the NFL “expand internationally and basically become the behemoth that they have become.” This prompted McIlory to give Rolapp a huge vote of confidence, saying it’s amazing he’ll bring that experience to the PGA Tour. Rolapp’s signature achievement with the NFL is launching Thursday Night Football, which he championed from its 2006 launch.

Additionally, McIlory said it was great that Monahan will be there to help smooth out the transition period. Monahan is slated to remain in his role through the end of 2026 before stepping away and letting Rolapp run the show.

“I think it’s a really positive thing for the tour,” McIlory said of Rolapp stepping in as CEO.

As the tour continues to strive in expanding its global outreach, Spieth noted that Rolapp resonated with players regarding challenging the television networks in how they show the product. Meanwhile, Spieth said Rolapp noted he was “open and willing to adapt and change while maintaining the integrity of the game.”

Bradley, the current U.S. Ryder Cup captain, also met Rolapp on Tuesday. Paired with highlighting his incredible résumé, Bradley said Rolapp “seems like a really smart guy.” And just a short time after he felt uncertain about the PGA Tour’s future, he expressed he had the utmost confidence going forward.

“I just think the PGA Tour is in such a great spot,” Bradley said. “A handful of years ago, when all this started, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was nervous. I didn’t know how this was all going to end up, but now, years later, I’m really confident in where the PGA Tour is and where it’s going. I’m proud to play on this Tour.

“It’s never been better than it has been right now. That was a worry, and now I’m even more excited about the future. It’s going to be great.”

As he continues acclimating to the role, it’ll take more than walking around and having brief conversations in a grey suit to grow the PGA Tour and keep its players happy. But with some of the tour’s most influential figures already speaking highly of him, Rolapp’s tenure is off to a hot start.

The PGA Tour is tapping an NFL executive as its new CEO, according to an ESPN report.

Football insiders Adam Schefter and Seth Wickersham wrote on Thursday that the league announced to teams via memo that Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s chief media and business officer, is leaving to take the position with the PGA Tour. Rolapp has been NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s right-hand man, with a strong background in negotiating media deals.

Though other names had been in the mix—including former Ticketmaster chairman Jared Smith and NASCAR head Steve Phelps—Rolapp had been long considered the favourite for the newly-created position with the tour.

The CEO role was announced in December by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

“We are bringing new perspectives on our team to help us realise the incredible opportunities for our sport,” Monahan said in a statement. “We can learn so much from the world of sport and entertainment and I’m excited to meet candidates for this role.”

Tour sources have told Golf Digest that the CEO position will primarily focus on business relationships and media rights, while the commissioner position oversees the administration and operations of the tour’s competition. The CEO will report to the tour’s board of directors and the policy board.

The move comes as the PGA Tour weighs its future direction. Two years have passed since the surprise framework agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s financial backer, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. However, talks have yet to bring a deal to fruition and discussions have gone cold in the past few months after a White House meeting did not go as planned.

Conversely, in 2024 the PGA Tour announced it came to an agreement with the Strategic Sports Group for private equity investment, which coincided with the creation of a for-profit venture. SSG will invest up to $3 billion in the tour, with an initial input of $1.5 billion. The initial framework called for PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan to be co-chair of PGA Tour Enterprises. Arthur Blank, one of the members of SSG, oversaw the CEO search.

The Oscars may have come and gone, but Awards Season isn’t over. And on Tuesday, the PGA Tour won an . . . Emmy?

Yep, an Emmy. And golf fans will agree it’s a well-deserved honour.

The PGA Tour’s Live Drone AR won the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award at the 46th Sports Emmy Awards.

So what is the Live Drone AR exactly? Here’s how the PGA Tour describes it:

A TOUR-owned, patent-pending technology, Drone AR was developed through a collaborative effort between six partners — the PGA TOUR, Bolt6, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Virtual Eye and Kaze Aerial Production — that came together in early 2024 with a shared vision to successfully track ball-in-motion data from a live moving drone on the PGA TOUR. Highlighting the skill of TOUR players and the challenge of iconic golf courses, the cutting-edge innovation allows fans to watch towering drives like never before, as the augmented reality experience combines live aerial video with real-time analytics.

Although, again, if you watch golf, you’ve certainly noticed these technological enhancements to tournament coverage on TV.

In the category, the tour beat out Games of the XXXIII Olympiad (Immersive Audio at Scale), NFL Live (StatusPro Visualizer—VR Technology), NHL Big City Greens Classic | Simpson’s Funday Football | NBA Dunk the Halls (Modified Character Scaling), and OptiMotion.
