Boo Weekley, one of golf’s great folk heroes, is finally back on top.

Weekley, 52, picked up his first career win on the PGA Tour Champions on Mother’s day, going bogey-free for 54 holes at the Insperity Invitational. His final putt would not have made a difference, as Weekley went on to win by three, but the fact it 360’d around the hole and dropped to stay blemish-free made the win extra special.

“It’s just been a long time,” said Weekley, who had previously made 63 starts on the senior tour without a win. “I’m finally starting to get healthy again and swinging the golf club good again.

“It feels good to be actually able to come out and play the way I know I can play, and compete the way I competed this week. Kept my mind straight, didn’t let myself get a little out of line or anything. Just focused on my targets, focused on my greens, focused on my putts.”

Weekley’s 15 under total at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas was enough to beat all-time great Ernie Els by three, though it was much closer than the final tallies would appear. His lead was only one on the 17th hole, where Els’ approach found the water, leading to a tournament-ending double bogey. Weekley found the putting surface and holed a long, uphill, left-to-right insurance birdie putt that gave him all the breathing room he needed with one to play.

“Unfortunately, didn’t make as many putts as I wanted to today,” said Weekley, who made three birdies and 15 pars on Sunday. “But we got lucky the good lord blessed me with a win today.”

An emotional Weekley was embraced by fiancé Susan Harp on the final green, leading to some tears. “You gotta stop… you gotta stop now,” Weekley told her.

For Weekley, this was his first win on any tour in nearly 13 years, his third and last coming on the PGA Tour at the Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial in 2013.

The world’s best golfers over the age of 50 headed to Sunningdale Golf Club last week for the 39th edition of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open.

All of the reigning Senior Major champions were in action with Angel Cabrera, Pádraig Harrington and Miguel Ángel Jiménez joining K.J. Choi in teeing it up. Four-time winner and 12-time Senior Major champion Bernhard Langer was also in the field alongside Welshman Stephen Dodd, who lifted the trophy the last time the event was held here.

Add in a further 14 winners of The Open, Masters, U.S. Open and US PGA Championship, along with numerous Ryder Cup players and Captains and it was a recipe for a memorable week.

Padraig Harrington’s career needs no burnishing, given that he’s already in the World Golf Hall of Fame, yet he continues to augment it in a major way, this time by winning the ISPS HANDA Senior Open on Sunday.

The victory was his second senior major this year, coming a month after he won the U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Harrington shot 67-65-65-67 for a 16-under 264 total at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England, and won by three over Justin Leonard and Thomas Bjorn.

“One of the things that myself and my caddie talk about a lot as you get older you reflect on your wins and where you win,” he said at the trophy presentation. “Winning here at Sunningdale is very special. It’s really nice to win at the great venues of golf.”

RELATED: Here’s the prize money breakdown for each golfer at the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open

Harrington has built his Hall of Fame resume on his performances on the game’s biggest stages. He won three major championships—two British Opens and a PGA Championship—in a two-year span in 2007 and 2008, and was ranked as high as third in the world ranking in the midst of Tiger Woods’ dominance.

This latest victory, his 11th on the PGA Tour Champions, was his third senior major championship, adding to a record that also includes a U.S. Senior Open victory in 2022. In addition to his two senior majors in 2025, he also tied for second in the Senior PGA Championship.

Moreover, he became only the fifth player in history to have won both the Open and Senior Open, joining Bob Charles, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Darren Clarke.

“I’m thrilled to have won, but very satisfied that I’ve won a Senior Open with my two Opens,” he said. “The fact that only five people have ever done it is quite special. I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to survive this long in the game. Longevity, at this stage, I think we look for a lot of things about our legacy in the game. The fact that I’m only the fifth person to have done that double, that’s pretty special.”

Harrington took a two-stroke lead into the final round, notwithstanding the fact that he was not comfortable with his swing. “I don’t feel very good about how I’m hitting the ball,” he said after Saturday’s round. “So trying to get away from that and not worry so much about that because clearly I’m scoring well. Better off shooting 13 under par and not feeling so good about it than thinking you’re swinging it great and being level par.”

He remained dissatisfied with his swing on the practice tee ahead of the final round.

“I really had a bad warmup, like really bad, again,” he said. “And I just think when you go out like that, you are prepared to get the job done with wherever the ball goes. You’re going to hit the shot. Your expectations go down. I managed myself very well. I tried to swing the smoothest, slowest I could all day. Just tried to really swing within myself. Just try to tone it down and as I said just get around it.

“I happened to play quite well as it turned out. I didn’t over think it when I was on the golf course. I hit some beautiful iron shots to start off. So yeah, it worked very nicely but I was prepared for a fight to be honest, and I was surprised I probably played as well as I did. But there was a little bit of turmoil in my own head at times.”

It isn’t supposed to be easy, of course, but en route to completing the Open-Senior Open double, he made it look easy, an historic 18-hole victory lap.

Former ISPS HANDA Senior Open winners Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenéz and two-time Masters Tournament champion José María Olazábal are the latest stars confirmed for this year’s Championship, which returns to Sunningdale next month, from July 24-27.

Some of golf’s most renowned names are set to tee it up on the Old Course when Europe’s only Senior Major returns to the famed Berkshire venue. Sunningdale will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time in its history, following on from 2009, 2015 and 2021.

The trio join defending champion K.J. Choi, record 12-time Senior Major Champion Bernhard Langer, Major Champions Pádraig Harrington and Ernie Els and European legends Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjørn in what promises to be a star-studded field.

Darren Clarke understandably was smiling after becoming just the fourth golfer to win the Open and Senior Open as he wins the Senior Open at Gleneagles. Mark Runnacles

In 2022, Clarke became the fourth player to win both The Open and The Senior Open when he triumphed at Gleneagles, finishing one stroke ahead of Pádraig Harrington. Clarke won The Claret Jug at Royal St George’s in 2011, becoming the first Northern Irish winner of The Open in more than 60 years.

The 56-year-old finished third the last time the Senior Open was held at Sunningdale, just two strokes behind eventual winner Stephen Dodd.

“I’m very proud to have won both The Open and The Senior Open and I’m very much looking forward to going back to Sunningdale this Summer,” said Clarke. “It’s fantastic that the Senior Open gives us the opportunity to play on a number of the best courses in the country and the Old Course at Sunningdale is certainly a worthy test.”

Miguel Angel Jimenéz lifted the trophy in 2018.

Jiménez claimed The Senior Open trophy in style in 2018 as he triumphed on the Old Course at St Andrews. It was his second Senior Major Championship and earlier this month he won his 16th title on PGA TOUR Champions at the Principal Charity Classic. He was runner-up to Dodd four years ago at Sunningdale.

“The Senior Open is a very special event to me and I’m so proud to call myself a winner of the Championship,” said Jiménez. “I’ve been wanting to go back to Sunningdale since my runner-up finish there a few years ago and I’m hopeful I can go one better in a few weeks’ time.”

José María Olazábal captured the Masters on two occasions.

Olázabal, who won the Masters Tournament in 1994 and 1999, will be making his eighth appearance at The Senior Open. The Spaniard formed a formidable Ryder Cup partnership with the legendary Seve Ballesteros as they returned 12 points from 15 matches together across four editions. He went on to captain Europe in 2012 as he masterminded the Miracle at Medinah, seeing his side overturn a four-point deficit on the final day to win 14½ – 13½.

“I’m excited to return to Sunningdale next month,” said Olazábal. “The Senior Open is a great event and one which we all look forward to playing in.”

ISPS HANDA Ambassadors Thomas Bjørn, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie are the latest players confirmed for the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open, which will return to the Old Course at Sunningdale this summer from July 23-27.

The trio join three-time Major Champion and fellow ISPS HANDA Ambassador Pádraig Harrington in the field, which will include a host of Major winners, Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players and former champions from the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

ISPS HANDA, founded by the Japanese philanthropist Dr. Haruhisa Handa, was recently announced as the new title partner of The Senior Open. The organisation is a long-term partner of professional and amateur golf, promoting the ethos that sport has the power to unite and inspire communities around the world.

Sunningdale will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time in its history, following on from the 2009, 2015 and 2021 editions.

Colin Montgomerie

Montgomerie was the dominant force in European golf during the 1990s, winning a record seven consecutive Order of Merits from 1993 to 1999 and then adding an eighth in 2005. The Scotsman made eight appearances in the Ryder Cup and captained Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010. He won 31 times on the DP World Tour and has 13 over-50s titles, including three Senior Major Championships.

“The Old Course at Sunningdale is an excellent test of golf and we are all looking forward to returning there later this year,” said Montgomerie. “It’s always a pleasure playing in front of fans in the United Kingdom and they are in for a real treat this summer. The standard of golf in the over-50s game is so high, so the stage is set for a special week.”

Ernie Els – Ross Kinnaird

Former World Number One and four-time Major Champion Els made his Senior Open debut at Sunningdale in 2021, finishing in a share of eighth. Els made eight appearances for the International side at the Presidents Cup and captained the team in 2019. The South African has won seven times on PGA TOUR Champions, including his first Senior Major victory at last year’s Kaulig Companies Championship.

“I’m really excited for this year’s ISPS HANDA Senior Open,” said Els. “Sunningdale is an incredible venue and it would mean a lot to me to get a win so close to my home at Wentworth. My game is in good shape, and I hope to carry that form into the Senior Open in July.”

Captain Thomas Bjorn of Europe holds the Ryder Cup with his European team after a lopsided win at Le Golf National in 2018 – Christian Petersen

Bjørn is Denmark’s most successful golfer in history, winning 15 times on the DP World Tour and captaining Europe to a victory at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. He also made three appearances in golf’s greatest team contest, being a member of the winning side on each occasion. The 54-year-old is a regular fixture on PGA TOUR Champions and has recorded 11 top ten finishes in the United States since the start of last season.

“It’s great having ISPS HANDA on board as Title Partner of this wonderful Championship,” said Bjørn. “I’ve only had the chance to play in The Senior Open a couple of times, but the standard is so high, you really have to be on your game to compete at this level.”

Padraig Harrington – Jared C. Tilton

Three-time Major Champion Harrington, who won The Open in 2007 and 2008 and the US PGA Championship in 2008, has finished inside the top five in three appearances at the Senior Open. He was runner-up on his first two appearances and finished fifth at Carnoustie last year.

“Sunningdale is a fantastic golf course and I’m looking forward to seeing the challenge it presents us with a Senior Open setup,” said Harrington. “I’ve had a few close calls in this Championship so far and would love to be in contention again going down the stretch.”

Padraig Harrington thought he had been let off the hook. The 53-year-old Irishman birdied half of the first 14 holes Sunday at Congressional during the final round of the Senior PGA Championship and was seemingly in control. Feeling confident, he promptly hit a big hook off the par-4 15th tee that resulted in a double bogey. Three holes later, at the historic 18th on the Blue Course, he missed a three-footer for par.

Thirty minutes later Harrington was meeting with the media while also keeping an eye on the television coverage. Angel Cabrera was aiming to win his second major in six days and held a two-shot lead over Harrington standing on the tee box on 18. Cabrera blew his drive way right, still found the green with his approach but three-putted to make bogey and only top Harrington by one, magnifying Harrington’s short par miss on the 72nd hole.

“I’d just really like him to two-putt,” Harrington said while watching Cabrera on 18. “And he’s not. Oh, God.

“Yeah, look, I’m disappointed now.”

On this championship Sunday outside the nation’s capital it was the two-time major winner (Cabrera) who topped the three-time major champ (Harrington), with both looking for their second Champions Tour major. Cabrera shot a final-round 69 to end the week at eight-under-par total, one ahead of Harrington and Thomas Bjorn. He just won the weather-plagued Regions Tradition, the first Champions Tour major of the year, on Monday before heading to Washington, D.C.

Angel Cabrera wins the 85th Senior PGA Championship!#SrPGAChamp pic.twitter.com/87gbEiC2Ky

So, yes, that’s two majors in six days, and three Champions Tour titles in the last seven weeks.

Cabrera’s win at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in early April was his first in 10 years and nine months. The former Masters and U.S. Open champion was jailed for 30 months in Brazil and Argentina for domestic assault and released in August 2023. He had played in 11 Champions events in 2019 and 2020 before his conviction. He returned last year to play some and is now the best player on the Champions Tour and its only three-time winner.

MORE: Angel Cabrera returns to winners circle for first time since release from prison

“I thought that I was going to fail, especially after being sitting without touching a club for a while,” Cabrera said. “But I’ve been working very, very hard and I feel that all the hard works pays off and this is what I’m having right now, like winning this tournament.”

The 55-year-old Argentine had a roller-coaster round of his own. He opened par, bogey, birdie, bogey, par, eagle and played Nos. 6-15 in five under par before finishing with two pars and a bogey on the last. He collected the $540,000 first-place prize and still has three majors remaining on the schedule, where he most certainly will be the favourite to win.

“I feel very emotional,” Cabrera said. “Maybe you cannot see but I’m very, very emotional inside, especially after all the things that I went through. I can’t believe that I made it but I’m here and very happy of myself.”

Harrington will lament the 72nd-hole three-putt for a while, but it was the tee shot on the 15th hole that he’d like back. The always introspective Irishman went into great detail about how he felt on the 15th hole and how his confident nature in that situation has hurt him in many key spots in the past. He won the 2022 U.S. Senior Open and has seven top-five finishes in majors the last three years.

“I’ve had a lifelong problem with getting confident and cocky and I did on the 15 tee box it was such a simple tee shot,” he said. “Five-wood, a little draw down there, and I just totally didn’t get into it enough and then panicked at the last moment and hit a big hook.

“It’s always plagued me my whole life since I’ve been a kid. Just get over-confident and just don’t. I’d be much better off if I got to the 15th hole and there was water everywhere. Probably would’ve done a better job. I just sometimes just—it follows me around. I can get overconfident.

“I lost a tournament when I was 18 years of age back—what was it called, the Irish Youth and I did the exact same thing. Two ahead with three to play and relaxed. I’m much better off in with nerves and tension.

“I was just relaxed on 15 and then I did it on 18 tee, 72nd hole at Carnoustie. Couldn’t see myself hitting a bad —that was the exact same. Stood there so confident, and at the last moment I had a little bit of doubt,” he said, referring to the 2007 Open Championship where he made double bogey on the last hole but still topped Sergio Garcia in a playoff.

“If you start off with doubt, when you feel doubt over the ball it doesn’t feel so bad,” he continued. “If you start off confident then you feel doubt it’s like a blowup. So, yeah, I was just too confident. Happens.”

Angel Cabrera just added some extra luggage for his trip to Augusta National this week, winning his first PGA Tour Champions event 20 months after being released from prison.

The 2009 Masters champion hasn’t been to the Masters since 2019. A lot has happened in his life since he was last able to drive down Magnolia Lane.

Angel Cabrera returns to winners circle for first time since release from prison

Cabrera, 55, last made the cut at the Masters in 2016, when he tied for 24th place at age 46. He lost to Adam Scott in a playoff in 2013 and won his first major, the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

But the Argentinian has only played in 25 PGA Tour Champions events since he turned 50 because he was in jail—starting in early 2021—stemming from criminal charges that included assault, theft and illegal intimidation. He was later sentenced to two years in prison, followed by a second assault charge that ended in a 28-month sentence. He was released in August 2023 and cleared to play in PGA Tour-sanctioned events shortly thereafter.

Which brings us to Sunday at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational at the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Florida. Cabrera was in control for most of the day, but a bogey on the 15th hole dropped him back into a tie with K.J. Choi. But he made birdie on the 17th hole, and Choi bogeyed the last for Cabrera to shoot 71 and win by two shots. He shot 68-66-71, good for an 11-under-par total for the week.

The 2-time major champion now has full status through 2026.@JamesHardieInv pic.twitter.com/0UigPeueCZ

“It’s very emotional after everything that I’ve gone through the last couple years, so being here to have these chances again and win again for me is very much,” Cabrera said. “And obviously it was a hard battle out there.”

Last year, Cabrera had nine appearances on the Champions Tour and collected two top-10 finishes. Cabrera’s last win on the PGA Tour came at the 2014 Greenbrier Classic, nearly 4,000 days ago.

Now Cabrera heads north to Augusta for the Masters. Not only has he missed playing in the tournament for the past six years, that means he also hasn’t attended the Champions Dinner, which annually is on Tuesday evening. This year, of course, it’s hosted by 2024 champion Scottie Scheffler.

But Cabrera doesn’t want to think about all of that yet.

“Right now, I want to enjoy this,” Cabrera said. “The Masters, I’m going to be walking hole by hole, but I want to enjoy this right now.”

The legend that is Bernhard Langer continues to grow unimpeded either by age or injury, suggesting as it does that there is truth to the superiority of German engineering.

Langer, a German native who now is a youthful 67, in a season derailed for nearly four months by a torn Achilles in February, engineered what has to be among his most satisfying victories on the PGA Tour Champions.

On the verge of kicking away what at one point seemed inevitable, the 47th victory of his senior career, Langer somehow regrouped at the 18th hole by holing a 35-foot birdie putt to win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club. It was the 18th consecutive year he has won at least one tournament on the senior circuit.

“I’m like you. I’m speechless,” Langer said. “Was that exciting, or what? The start I had was just incredible. I was totally in the zone. The easiest putt I had, a six-footer, I missed it for my fifth birdie in a row. I played good and then got a little unrattled there on the back nine, and Steven Alker got going.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

Bernhard Langer claims the season finale in style @SchwabCupFinale

“It’s unbelievable. I can’t describe it. To win this big tournament after what I’ve been through, to make it 18 years in a row out here, it’s quite amazing. I’m very grateful. I’m very blessed.”

Langer, who took a one-stroke lead into the final round, birdied the first four holes and five of the first six on Sunday en route to a front-nine six-under-par 30 to open what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.

But consecutive bogeys to begin the back nine gave those in pursuit hope, notably Alker and Richard Green. Eventually a bogey at 17 dropped him into a three-way tie for the lead with Alker and Green, and a misguided tee shot at the par-5 18th jeopardized his quest for victory. Then came the long birdie putt that gave him a one-stroke lead over Alker, who then missed his birdie putt to tie.

“That’s Bernhard Langer for you, you know what I mean?” Alker said. “That’s the way he finishes.”

Alker’s consolation prize was that he won the seasonlong Charles Schwab Cup for the second time.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-88185" class="size-full wp-image-88185" src="https://golfdigestme.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Steven-Alker-congratulates-Bernhard-Langer-on-the-18th-green-during-the-final-round-of-the-Charles-Schwab-Cup-Championship-at-Phoenix-Country-Club-Ben-Jared.jpg" alt="Steven Alker congratulates Bernhard Langer on the 18th green during the final round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club.
“Yeah, it means a lot,” he said. “It’s a seasonlong race, so consistency, you want to try to get some wins in there as well. I’m proud of the fact that I kept that consistency over the last few years. Just competing with Bernhard and everybody out here on the Champions Tour, it’s just made me a better player. I’m very grateful for that.”

Langer closed with a five-under 66 and a 72-hole total of 18-under 266.

“When we arrived here on Monday, I mentioned to Terry [Holt, his caddie] that we haven’t won this year and we’ve only got one more chance,” Langer said. “This was the least likely one to win because I’ve just never done very well here for some reason. But I had one of the best putting weeks of my life.

“Obviously, this is even more exciting to be holding this trophy, one that’s eluded me so many years.”

John Daly told the PGA Tour that he lost his Florida home during last week’s Hurricane Helene that impacted much of the southeastern United States.

Reports emerged Friday that the two-time major winner’s residence in Clearwater was destroyed from the category-4 storm. On Wednesday, Daly confirmed the stories to the tour’s website, calling the hurricane “devastating, the worst I’ve ever seen.”

“I’m just glad everyone is healthy, that’s the main thing,” Daly told the PGA Tour’s Paul Hodowanic. “You live in Florida, you have to understand that’s going to happen, but not like this. I didn’t think it would be this bad.”

Daly’s primary home is in Arkansas, although told Hodowanic that three houses belonging to family members and friends were also lost in the Clearwater area. As of writing over 180 people have died because of the storm, with hundreds still missing. Millions in the region remain without power.

“I hope everyone gets safe and gets their homes back,” Daly said. “My heart just goes out to everybody.”

Daly, 58, is playing in this week’s Champions Tour event in Jacksonville.
