The world’s best golfers over the age of 50 headed to Sunningdale Golf Club last week for the 39th edition of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open.

All of the reigning Senior Major champions were in action with Angel Cabrera, Pádraig Harrington and Miguel Ángel Jiménez joining K.J. Choi in teeing it up. Four-time winner and 12-time Senior Major champion Bernhard Langer was also in the field alongside Welshman Stephen Dodd, who lifted the trophy the last time the event was held here.

Add in a further 14 winners of The Open, Masters, U.S. Open and US PGA Championship, along with numerous Ryder Cup players and Captains and it was a recipe for a memorable week.

The prize purse for the 2025 edition was $2,850,000, with the winner taking home over $400,000.

Padraig Harrington’s career needs no burnishing, given that he’s already in the World Golf Hall of Fame, yet he continues to augment it in a major way, this time by winning the ISPS HANDA Senior Open on Sunday.

The victory was his second senior major this year, coming a month after he won the U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Harrington shot 67-65-65-67 for a 16-under 264 total at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England, and won by three over Justin Leonard and Thomas Bjorn.

“One of the things that myself and my caddie talk about a lot as you get older you reflect on your wins and where you win,” he said at the trophy presentation. “Winning here at Sunningdale is very special. It’s really nice to win at the great venues of golf.”

RELATED: Here’s the prize money breakdown for each golfer at the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open

Harrington has built his Hall of Fame resume on his performances on the game’s biggest stages. He won three major championships—two British Opens and a PGA Championship—in a two-year span in 2007 and 2008, and was ranked as high as third in the world ranking in the midst of Tiger Woods’ dominance.

This latest victory, his 11th on the PGA Tour Champions, was his third senior major championship, adding to a record that also includes a U.S. Senior Open victory in 2022. In addition to his two senior majors in 2025, he also tied for second in the Senior PGA Championship.

Moreover, he became only the fifth player in history to have won both the Open and Senior Open, joining Bob Charles, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Darren Clarke.

“I’m thrilled to have won, but very satisfied that I’ve won a Senior Open with my two Opens,” he said. “The fact that only five people have ever done it is quite special. I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to survive this long in the game. Longevity, at this stage, I think we look for a lot of things about our legacy in the game. The fact that I’m only the fifth person to have done that double, that’s pretty special.”

Harrington took a two-stroke lead into the final round, notwithstanding the fact that he was not comfortable with his swing. “I don’t feel very good about how I’m hitting the ball,” he said after Saturday’s round. “So trying to get away from that and not worry so much about that because clearly I’m scoring well. Better off shooting 13 under par and not feeling so good about it than thinking you’re swinging it great and being level par.”

He remained dissatisfied with his swing on the practice tee ahead of the final round.

“I really had a bad warmup, like really bad, again,” he said. “And I just think when you go out like that, you are prepared to get the job done with wherever the ball goes. You’re going to hit the shot. Your expectations go down. I managed myself very well. I tried to swing the smoothest, slowest I could all day. Just tried to really swing within myself. Just try to tone it down and as I said just get around it.

“I happened to play quite well as it turned out. I didn’t over think it when I was on the golf course. I hit some beautiful iron shots to start off. So yeah, it worked very nicely but I was prepared for a fight to be honest, and I was surprised I probably played as well as I did. But there was a little bit of turmoil in my own head at times.”

It isn’t supposed to be easy, of course, but en route to completing the Open-Senior Open double, he made it look easy, an historic 18-hole victory lap.

Thursday’s opening round of the British Open had a bit of an Old-Timer’s Day feel with Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood sharing the early lead at various points. And then there was the man who hit the first shot at Royal Portrush.

That would be Padraig Harrington, who had the honour of striking the opening tee shot. And setting his alarm clock really, really early for the occasion.

Although the three-time major champ said after he hates “the idea of being ceremonial,” the moment hit him in the feels more than expected.

Following his round, Harrington was asked about getting emotional—specifically, when was the last time he shed some tears. And he provided a hilarious response. Here’s the entire exchange.

Q. When was the last time you had an emotional reaction like that on the golf course or felt maybe a tear welling up a little bit?

PADRAIG HARRINGTON: Usually when I’m watching a movie on an airplane. Does everybody not well up on airplanes? I think airplanes do that to me. Could be a comedy or something like that. It doesn’t have to be that serious. (Laughter).

Q. But on the golf course?

PADRAIG HARRINGTON: I wouldn’t say I get too emotional, not like that, no. It was definitely—it felt like they were there for me, giving me a clap, yeah. I expected the nerves; I didn’t expect that. So I did have to adjust myself for that.

Q. It was special.

PADRAIG HARRINGTON: Yeah, it was very special, I’ve got to say. It’s a great honour to do it, as I said. I really hate the idea of being ceremonial, but I was prepared to take that to do it because it was here. I’m glad I did.

So good. This is as steely of a competitor as they come, but even Harrington, who turns 54 next month, knows there are only so many more times he’ll get to tee it up at his favourite golf tournament.

And we think Paddy might be onto something here. Who hasn’t cried watching a movie on an airplane? “Crazy, Stupid, Love” gets me every time. Am I right? No? Well, forget I said that then . . . I was just kidding . . .

Anyway, Harrington’s first-round score of 75 wasn’t quite as special, but he’ll always have that cool moment. And if he misses the cut, there will be plenty of movies to have another cry to on his flight home.

It was for Padraig Harrington a week that began with double-doubles (burgers, not bogeys), a lost ball and losing a specious debate. It ended with a declaration of profound gratitude and another U.S. Senior Open championship.

The Irishman, 53, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, prevailed in a veritable 18-hole match race with Stewart Cink on the East Course at the Broadmoor on Sunday.

They began the day in a three-way tie for the lead, though the third wheel, Mark Hensby, bowed out of contention early. Harrington and Cink made the turn tied for the lead and were tied again with four holes to play, before a Cink bogey on the par-3 16th ultimately delivered the victory to Harrington.

In the aftermath, Harrington expressed his gratitude, noting that he won with his wife and one of his two kids in attendance, the other watching “from around the world,” he said.

“As much as I’ve won tournaments back in the day, I didn’t get to enjoy the experience with my kids,” Harrington said. “They were there for some of them, but they were only little. Now they understand it.”

"For 63 holes, we talked a lot, and for the last 9 holes things were a little quieter! But it was always in good spirit."@padraig_h on playing all four rounds with U.S. Senior Open runner up Stewart Cink. pic.twitter.com/cjcmgpyZi2

— USGA (@USGA) June 29, 2025

The PGA Tour Champions, too, has offered “an opportunity to relive our past glories” while also allowing him to enjoy the experience substantially more, including formerly taboo dietary options.

“When you finish up [preparation] on Wednesday night … I went for an In-N-Out burger,” he said. “Like, I didn’t eat a french fry or a burger for 10, 15 years of my career. It was all about the right diet, all that sort of thing. I actually had two double-doubles.”

Meanwhile, his overall enjoyment of his week was temporarily interrupted by what occurred during the second round on Friday. Harrington hit a wayward shot into bushes and was unable to find his ball. After the round, he has words with NBC Sports’ on-course reporter Roger Maltbie for not helping look for the ball. Maltbie argued that he was on hand to report on the proceedings, not to participate in them.

Nonetheless, Harrington posted a second straight round of three-under 67, followed by a 68 on Saturday to share the lead with Cink and Hensby. He followed that up with a third 67 and a one-stroke victory, two years after winning the Senior Open for the first time, and three years after receiving some valuable advice from Hale Irwin.

“I was coming down 18, I said to my caddie Ronan [Flood], ‘look, if I birdie this hole, I win.’ It takes all the permutations out of it. Ronan then said something to me, reminded me of something that Hale Irwin told me. He said, ‘always hit the shot you would hit if you’re one shot behind,’ and that kind of gave good clarity to what I was going to do.

“Obviously if you’re one shot behind, you’d be hitting at that pin, you’ve got to take it on,” Harrington continued. “I think it made the decision. It gave me clarity to that decision that I was confident that I was doing the right thing.”

He hit his approach eight feet, basically sealing the victory with a two-putt par.

Harrington, who won two British Opens and a PGA Championship among his 14 European Tour and four PGA Tour victories, has now joyfully won 10 PGA Tour Champions events

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “We’re so much better together at this stage of our careers. Everybody is happier and friendlier. We’re not half as grumpy as we were when we were young guys. We’re much more relaxed when we’re on the golf course. We want to play great golf, but I think the environment around the Champions Tour is really nice.

“Most of us would have burnt out in golf. You put so much into your golfing career, you burn out. Usually you last about 20 years is the burn-out period, 15 to 20 years. The Champions Tour is a new lease on life. The only way you can kind of do it is do it with a different attitude and a new attitude.

“As I said, it’s about, I suppose, enjoying your past glories now and reliving them.”

ISPS HANDA Ambassadors Thomas Bjørn, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie are the latest players confirmed for the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open, which will return to the Old Course at Sunningdale this summer from July 23-27.

The trio join three-time Major Champion and fellow ISPS HANDA Ambassador Pádraig Harrington in the field, which will include a host of Major winners, Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players and former champions from the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

ISPS HANDA, founded by the Japanese philanthropist Dr. Haruhisa Handa, was recently announced as the new title partner of The Senior Open. The organisation is a long-term partner of professional and amateur golf, promoting the ethos that sport has the power to unite and inspire communities around the world.

Sunningdale will host the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time in its history, following on from the 2009, 2015 and 2021 editions.

Colin Montgomerie

Montgomerie was the dominant force in European golf during the 1990s, winning a record seven consecutive Order of Merits from 1993 to 1999 and then adding an eighth in 2005. The Scotsman made eight appearances in the Ryder Cup and captained Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010. He won 31 times on the DP World Tour and has 13 over-50s titles, including three Senior Major Championships.

“The Old Course at Sunningdale is an excellent test of golf and we are all looking forward to returning there later this year,” said Montgomerie. “It’s always a pleasure playing in front of fans in the United Kingdom and they are in for a real treat this summer. The standard of golf in the over-50s game is so high, so the stage is set for a special week.”

Ernie Els – Ross Kinnaird

Former World Number One and four-time Major Champion Els made his Senior Open debut at Sunningdale in 2021, finishing in a share of eighth. Els made eight appearances for the International side at the Presidents Cup and captained the team in 2019. The South African has won seven times on PGA TOUR Champions, including his first Senior Major victory at last year’s Kaulig Companies Championship.

“I’m really excited for this year’s ISPS HANDA Senior Open,” said Els. “Sunningdale is an incredible venue and it would mean a lot to me to get a win so close to my home at Wentworth. My game is in good shape, and I hope to carry that form into the Senior Open in July.”

Captain Thomas Bjorn of Europe holds the Ryder Cup with his European team after a lopsided win at Le Golf National in 2018 – Christian Petersen

Bjørn is Denmark’s most successful golfer in history, winning 15 times on the DP World Tour and captaining Europe to a victory at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National. He also made three appearances in golf’s greatest team contest, being a member of the winning side on each occasion. The 54-year-old is a regular fixture on PGA TOUR Champions and has recorded 11 top ten finishes in the United States since the start of last season.

“It’s great having ISPS HANDA on board as Title Partner of this wonderful Championship,” said Bjørn. “I’ve only had the chance to play in The Senior Open a couple of times, but the standard is so high, you really have to be on your game to compete at this level.”

Padraig Harrington – Jared C. Tilton

Three-time Major Champion Harrington, who won The Open in 2007 and 2008 and the US PGA Championship in 2008, has finished inside the top five in three appearances at the Senior Open. He was runner-up on his first two appearances and finished fifth at Carnoustie last year.

“Sunningdale is a fantastic golf course and I’m looking forward to seeing the challenge it presents us with a Senior Open setup,” said Harrington. “I’ve had a few close calls in this Championship so far and would love to be in contention again going down the stretch.”

I’ve been coming here for a few years, and I think the first year I came here, the fairways were the narrowest I’ve ever seen. Which is strange, because when you make the fairways narrow, it means everybody hits more drivers, as you’re likely to miss them, so you might as well whack it down there.

So, I’ve been encouraging them to expand some of the fairways towards the hazards. This way, they’re wider targets, but there’s actually more danger, so it becomes more of a risk-reward situation.

Take the 18th here as a perfect example. The fairway, when we first came, was probably 18 yards wide, but now it’s 40 yards wide. However, it’s actually a tougher tee shot now. So, it’s fairer but tougher — more risk-reward.

It’s the same around the greens. We’ve brought a few of the hazards into play that were near the green run-offs. So, when you miss the green, the ball runs down 10-15 yards, and you have to chip off the fairway, which is tougher for us than chipping out of the rough. Again, it’s more manicured, it looks good, but it’s actually tougher.

READ: Here’s the prize money breakdown for each golfer at the 2025 Ras Al Khaimah Championship

There are a few places where we’ve made it a little easier, and we’ll be correcting that at the end of the week! But in general, it’s more of a risk-reward course, yet a fairer one.

This course can change quite a lot in the wind. Certain holes can be really difficult, with tough tee shots. The tee shot on the 3rd is very tricky, and the stretch of holes 9, 10, 11, and 12 can change significantly depending on the wind direction. You could get a good break depending on your tee time in the first two days, but come the weekend, it’s the same for everyone. It can be brutally tough at times, but then sometimes you get a nice, advantageous wind, and it’s all cheery!

I love consulting; I really enjoy it. I’ve done it at quite a few places now. Officially, I do it at the Renaissance Club for the Genesis Scottish Open. But I’m always looking to give feedback. I want to make golf holes look and play better. Ideally, a golf course should be very playable for the handicap golfer and difficult for the professional. What we tend to see is golf courses that are incredibly difficult for amateur golfers and very easy for the pros.

Sometimes they get it the wrong way around. Clubs should always prioritise the needs of your membership and playing community, much more than the pros, because we only come once a year. You’re much better off considering the playing members, making the golf course enjoyable and playable for them, and then adding in certain elements, like a bank running down to a hazard, which you can keep at a certain height so the ball won’t run down. Then, when the tournament comes, you cut it down to fairway length, and the ball will run into the water. Very simple. Little things like that can change the character of a golf course and suit everyone playing it.

The 2025 Race to Dubai sees the UAE playing a central role as always, with the Ras Al Khaimah Championship forming part of the International Swing, known as the Middle East swing for the old guard.

The event is number three on their early schedule to be held in the United Arab Emirates, and one of five across the Middle East, promising an exciting start to the new season while offering a chance to see both new faces and familiar ones.

Padraig Harrington. Sam Greenwood

Pádraig Harrington, a three-time Major champion and two-time Senior Major winner, will return to familiar territory in January. The Irishman had a stellar 2024, racking up three victories on the PGA Tour Champions and earning top-10 finishes in two Senior Majors. His form also saw him finish tied for 22nd at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Though he has shifted his focus largely to the PGA Tour Champions circuit since turning 50 a couple of years ago, the 2021 Ryder Cup skipper remains confident in his ability to compete with the best, and age is very much just a number.

RELATED: DP World Tour: 2025 Middle East Swing

Harrington has made the cut in each of his last three appearances at Al Hamra Golf Club, and he’s looking forward to adding another chapter to his Middle Eastern journey at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in 2025.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing in the Middle East, and Al Hamra is one of my favourite courses,” said Harrington.

“The layout suits my game, and I feel like I’ve got a real chance to contend if I bring my best stuff. I’m excited to get back out there and challenge for a win.”

Al Hamra Golf Club

A victory in Ras Al Khaimah would be more than just another title for the 53-year-old—it would make him the oldest winner in DP World Tour history, a record currently held by Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez at the 2014 Open de Espana, when he was aged 50 years and 133 days.

“One of my big goals is to break Miguel’s record and become the oldest winner on the DP World Tour,” he added. “Ras Al Khaimah is definitely a place where I think that could happen.

“The course is in great shape, and the hospitality in the UAE is second to none. We’re always well taken care of, but the welcome we get at Al Hamra is something special.”

Having made its debut on the global stage by hosting three European Challenge Tour events, including the 2018 Challenge Tour Grand Final and the DP World Tour since 2022, Al Hamra Golf Club is ready to host another exciting chapter of the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, with Paddy aiming to make history himself, with a bit of the luck of the Irish of course.

Pádraig Harrington, a multiple Major Champion and father of two, has stressed the importance of fostering a love for golf in children before focusing on the skill side of the game.

Speaking ahead of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the Irishman encouraged making the sport of golf enjoyable, getting kids to “smash it, find it, and have fun getting it in the hole.”

Harrington, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2024, notes that parents often rush their children’s progress, forgetting they have plenty of time to improve. He advises parents to step back and allow kids to make mistakes, intervening only when asked.

Pádraig recalls how his own children sometimes saw his advice as criticism, reminding parents to be mindful of their language.

“Even with my own kids, I’d be aware of this and tell my kids things, but they would always tell me if I told them something they took that as a criticism.”

Harrington also recommends taking a few extra minutes after practice to bond with kids, such as sharing a Coca-Cola. This small moment helps children associate positive feelings with
the sport, leaving a lasting impression.

The Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship returns to the Royal Golf Club from January 30 to February 2, 2025, and will feature a field headlined by defending champion Dylan Frittelli, three-time Major winner Pádraig Harrington, 2016 US PGA Champion Jimmy Walker, and other notable DP World Tour stars.

The tournament, part of the International Swing on the Race to Dubai, will once again be supported by Bapco Energies. Last year, the event marked the return of the DP World Tour to the Kingdom for the first time since 2011.

South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli will return to defend his title after claiming his third DP World Tour win and first in seven years.

Pádraig, who enjoyed a successful 2024 season with three wins on the PGA TOUR Champions and two top-ten finishes in Senior Majors, will return to Bahrain for the first time since 2011. The 2021 Ryder Cup captain and three-time Major winner is looking forward to testing his game on the same course he played more than a decade ago.

“It’s been a respectable year for me, with three wins under my belt, and I feel like I’m playing some good golf,” said Harrington. “I’m starting off next year with a few weeks in the Middle East, and although it’s been a while since I was last in Bahrain, we are playing on the same course we did in 2011, so it’ll be interesting to see how much it’s changed in that time.”

Meanwhile, Jimmy Walker, the 2016 US PGA Championship winner, will make his debut in Bahrain. “It’s always exciting to visit a new country, and Bahrain is one that I’ve heard a lot of great things about.

“I played twice on the DP World Tour last year and had a couple of really positive results, so hopefully I can build on that with a strong performance at Royal Golf Club.”

Thorbjørn Olesen of Denmark, who secured his eighth DP World Tour win earlier in 2024 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, will be playing in Bahrain for the first time. Olesen sees this as an opportunity to continue his strong early-season form and set the tone for the year ahead.

Jorge Campillo of Spain, a three-time DP World Tour winner, will also return to Bahrain for his second appearance at the Royal Golf Club. After a strong finish to the 2024 season, Campillo is looking to build on that momentum in 2025. “I’m hoping to use the experience I gained last year to improve my game this time around,” said the Spaniard.

We have our very own duel in the desert, as Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm meet for the first time in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

With the DP World Tour in town, we bring you exclusive interviews with England’s Jordan Smith ahead of the Team Cup in Abu Dhabi, and South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli looks ahead to defending his title in Bahrain at Royal Golf Club.

Age is very much just a number for Padraig Harrington as he heads to Ras Al Khaimah, hoping for a record-breaking week at Al Hamra Golf Club.

Have you ever played the only golf course in Sharjah? We take a closer look at this overlooked nine-hole championship golf course in the UAE.

David Leadbetter and Tony Finau are on hand to help you improve your game, while we also explore some of the latest equipment to help you play better around the green.

All this and plenty more in the January 2025 edition of Golf Digest Middle East.
