Sure, we’re over 300 days from the next Masters, but the beloved major technically starts in June the preceding year. That’s because the Masters ticket application lottery is officially open for you … and everyone else in the world. The application period for 2027 Masters tickets opened on Monday, June 1 and will run through June 20.

Often called “the toughest ticket in sports,” there are millions of entries for a finite number of spots. And yet, someone has to win. Why not you? Or me? Rory McIlroy will have an opportunity to go back-to-back-to-back. Anything is possible.

The “lottery” is the only authorised way to buy Masters tickets—and unless you’re Harry Styles or Wayne Gretzky, you’re going to need to win this to get through the Augusta National gates. Here’s what you need to know if you’re going to try your hand at the lottery of all lotteries.

When is the 2027 Masters?

The 2027 Masters will run from April 5-11. Practice rounds will be from Monday-Wednesday, April 5-7, with the Par-3 Contest on Wednesday. And then, tournament rounds will be played from Thursday-Sunday, April 8-11.

How much are tickets?

Despite demand, tickets are relatively inexpensive. Monday and Tuesday are $125 apiece, and Wednesday will be $150. Daily tournament tickets are $160 each.

How will you know if you’ve won?

Once the random selection process is done, you’ll receive an email (even if you didn’t get tickets). Daily tournament tickets are handed out first, according to Augusta National. And then those who didn’t win those will have a chance at the practice rounds. The emails will be sent out in late July, along with payment details, if you’re lucky enough to win.

Augusta National

What are Masters Series Badges?

Okay, now we’re getting a bit big for our britches, aren’t we? Masters Series Badges are lifetime access tickets for all four tournament days. They’re the most sought-after of tickets and cover entry over the course of the competition’s four days. There’s a Masters Series Badge waiting list, and you’re not allowed to transfer the Badge down to your family.

OK, so how do I enter to get tickets?

All you have to do is go to this link right here and sign up. You can apply for up to four tickets for any or all days, but you can win only one day.

Also, if you want to expand your Augusta National/Masters reach, you might want to sign up for Drive, Chip & Putt tickets and/or the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Tickets for the Drive, Chip & Putt are $35 each. The first two ANWA rounds, played at Champions Retreat Golf Club, are free. The final Saturday round, played at Augusta National, is $150.

Best of luck out there. Maybe it’s time to get into religion or even hire an Etsy witch. Every bit counts. And to be fair, the odds are 50-50 you get into Augusta National. You either win tickets or you don’t. That sounds like flipping a coin. (There’s a reason I’m a journalist and not a statistician.)

The first Thursday of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is already arguably the least productive work day of the year. Well, it’s about to get even less productive if you head on over to the Masters website.

That’s because the Masters has a new feature that lets you search for any shot from any final round of the tournament between 1968 and 2025. And it’s spectacular.

RELATED: Rory McIlroy reveals Masters champions dinner menu

Thanks to Kyle Porter at Normal Sport for alerting us to the Masters Vault:

Oh wow, the Masters launched a search function where you can find video of any shot hit from 1968-2025. pic.twitter.com/BGDsa4u2oQ

Talk about going down a rabbit hole. This thing is awesome. For some reason, my first thought was to look up Jeff Maggert hitting himself with his own golf ball on No. 3 in 2003 (Sorry, Jeff). And boom, there it is:

Just absolute heaven for golf sickos. Heck, you might not even want to watch the basketball games this afternoon anymore.

Many questions swirl around Rory McIlroy’s return to Augusta National in a few weeks’ time. Can he repeat as Masters champion? How’s the back? Is the fire still there? But none more pressing than, “What’s for dinner?” Thankfully, we got that answer on Wednesday when McIlroy unveiled the menu for his 2026 Champions Dinner. Read it and <del>weep</del> and salivate.

Served in honor of Mr. Rory McIlroy. #themasters pic.twitter.com/hUp3uaQeNl

— The Masters (@TheMasters) March 18, 2026

McIlroy has gone upscale with his selections, opting for a wagyu filet for his cut of beef and a yellowfin tuna first course inspired by Le Bernandin, chef Eric Ripert’s iconic three-Michelin Star NYC seafood institution.

“It’s a really thin slice of French baguette with a really thin slight of foie gras on top of that and tuna carpaccio. So raw slices of tuna on top of that,” McIlroy explained. “It’s a really simple dish, but every time we go to that restaurant, that’s the one thing that I have to have. I can sort of change up everything else in my order but that tuna carpaccio is the one that stays. They [Augusta National chefs] went up to the restaurant and worked with the chefs, and made sure—they obviously wanted to get it right for the night, so that’s really cool.”

But McIlroy’s menu is not entirely a white-table-cloth affair. The bacon-wrapped dates are a tribute to those that his mother makes—”thanks to Rosie for that,” McIlory quipped—while the rustic grilled elk sliders represent a bit of a good-luck charm, as McIlroy says he ate elk several times in the build-up to last year’s triumphant Masters.

But McIlory’s most-anticipated part of the meal isn’t food at all.

“My favourite part of the menu is that you obviously get access to the wonderful wine cellar at Augusta National,” McIlroy said.

The wine list for McIlory’s Champions Dinner will begin with a 2015 Salon Brut Champagne, followed by a 2022 Domaine Leflaive Batard Montrachet, a 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild—the wine McIlory drank in celebration of his 2025 victory—and a 1989 Chateau D’Yquem dessert wine in tribute to his birth year.

RELATED: This new teaser for the 90th Masters will have you juiced out of your mind

On the whole, McIlroy’s menu shouldn’t ruffle too many feathers. It has a little something for everyone—a little sweet, a little savoury, and sometimes even both at the same time—and according to the 2026 champ, that’s by design.

“I always thought about if I did win the Masters one day, what would I want it to look like? What would I like to serve?” McIlroy said on Wednesday. “I didn’t really want to go with a theme … hopefully this isn’t my last time hosting the dinner, so I felt I wanted to do something that I would enjoy, but also all the other champions would enjoy as well. So it wasn’t put together off the top of my head. I tried to be pretty thoughtful with it and tried to incorporate some of the things I like and a few personal touches along the way.”

It’s hard to argue with that. Even Sir Nick Faldo, one of the Champions Dinner’s toughest food critics over the years, shouldn’t have too much to complain about it. Perhaps he’s more of a ribeye guy, but McIlroy’s menu is certainly a big step up from “Chuck E. Cheese’s.”

The Players Championship is officially in the books. Despite Cameron Young’s career-defining breakthrough and all the “fifth major” chatter throughout the week, that can only mean one thing:

It’s Masters season, babyyyyyy.

Of course, the marketing geniuses down at ANGC HQ didn’t miss a beat either. On Monday morning, mere hours after Young prevailed at TPC Sawgrass, they released a new teaser for the 90th playing of the Masters that sent golf fans into a state of pure delirium. Sound up, lock in.

Set to the invigorating tones of James Brown, this 90-second feast celebrates 90 years of Masters magic, from Jack’s charge in ’86 to Tiger’s chip in 2005 to Rory’s rollercoaster last spring. It’s a glorious time machine, and if it doesn’t have you chomping at the bit for next month, then you may want to check your pulse.

RELATED: Here’s everybody in the field (so far) at Augusta National

Though the 2026 Masters will clearly have one eye on the past in celebration of its 90th birthday, there’s no shortage of storylines in the here and now. Will Rory repeat? Can Ludvig Aberg avenge his Players collapse? Will Scottie Scheffler shake off his (relative) struggles or will Brooks Koepka announce his return to the PGA Tour with authority? We’ll get the answers to those questions and plenty more when the 90th Masters begins Thursday, April 9th.

Jack Nicklaus said what many were thinking after Rory McIlroy won the Masters: “It will take the world off his shoulders and you’re now going to see a lot more of really good golf out of Rory McIlroy,” Nicklaus said during the CBS broadcast. After 11 years of trying to complete the Grand Slam, McIlroy had finally done it. He would be unstoppable, right?

But that isn’t what has happened. The weeks and months after McIlroy’s Masters win have been uneven. In May, he finished T-47 at the PGA Championship, where it was leaked that his driver had been tested and deemed non-conforming. He didn’t speak to the press after any of the rounds at the PGA Championship. When he did talk after the third round of the U.S. Open in June, he wasn’t happy.

“I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah,” McIlroy said of skipping media.

At Oakmont, McIlroy slammed clubs and broke a tee marker. When he made the cut by a shot, he joked about his indifference to being there.

“It’s much easier being on the cut line when you don’t really care if you’re here for the weekend or not,” he said, chuckling.

After a final-round 67 to finish T-19, McIlroy again spoke to the media—this time, about motivation.

“If I can’t get motivated to get up for an Open Championship at home, then I don’t know what can motivate me,” McIlroy said of the final major of the year to be played at Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland in July. “As I said, I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind. I probably haven’t been there the last few weeks.”

“I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you’ve got to make your way back down, and you’ve got to look for another mountain to climb,” McIlroy said. “An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those.”

Rory McIlroy. Image by Warren Little

McIlroy’s talk about a lack of motivation feels unexpected in part because of how different it is from the last player to complete the Grand Slam. After Tiger Woods won the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 2000 to complete the Grand Slam, he went on to win the next two majors.

Although Woods and McIlroy’s reactions and results after completing their Slams were very different, McIlroy’s isn’t completely unexpected, sports psychologist Dr. Deborah Graham, says. Dr. Graham has spent decades working with and studying professional golfers. She says what we’ve seen with McIlroy could be a bit of “post-success melancholy.” Maybe you’ve heard of it in reference to Olympians, and the lulls some athletes experience when the Games are over,

McIlroy’s completion of the Grand Slam was unlike Woods’ experience given where each were in their careers. Woods was just 24 years old, and achieved the goal relatively quicky. He didn’t have to spend 11 years listening to speculation. With McIlroy, meanwhile, it was a persistent focus, which carries even a risk even when successful.

“Some people call it post-success downer or post-success melancholy where you’ve had a single goal, a single purpose, and it’s not exactly single but it feels like it because that’s what everyone wants to talk about,” Dr. Graham says. “I can picture him having that as a very big target for quite some time. And like he said, when you reach a goal, you have to find something to replace it with, otherwise it leaves a void.”

By saying he needs another mountain to climb, McIlroy is addressing the fact that after the Masters, he didn’t have a plan. And he’s the type of player who appears to need to have a goal solidly in place to prepare and play his best.

The way to address this void, and find something new to replace it with, would be to take some time, Dr. Graham says. But the schedule didn’t allow for that. McIlroy played in two majors in the two months following the Masters. Taking all of this into account, McIlroy’s uncharacteristic comments and club slams start to make a bit more sense.

“We don’t even think about it, but when we reach a major goal, we kind of lose that sense of purpose,” Dr. Graham said.

When your goal is based on a result, there is an emptiness that can follow achieving that result. This highlights one of Woods’ superpowers. When he talks about golf, he emphasizes finding a reward in the work.

“The enjoyment is going out there and working for it, and grinding it out and going toe-to-toe with two of the best players in the world,” Woods said after the 2001 Masters. “David (Duval) and Phil (Mickelson), playing really well, to go toe-to-toe with them, that is work, but that’s what it’s all about. That’s the fun of it. And to have that challenge, whether you win or not, that’s why we play, to be able to experience that. That, to me, is the reason why I practice, to have that feeling, coming down the stretch knowing that you have to hit golf shots against the best players and somehow be able to do it.”

The power in this is that this work will always exist. No matter how many tournaments Woods wins, the work is always there. That’s why in the wake of winning his Slam, Woods was calm, collected, and ready to win the next two majors. It was all part of a process he enjoyed.

What McIlroy is going through is different. One response isn’t right and one isn’t wrong; McIlroy might just need some more time.

And luckily, now he’ll get it.

The week after Oakmont, McIlroy went to Connecticut to play in the Travelers Championship. He shot rounds of 64-71-68-65 and talked about feeling more confident with his driver. And said he’ll be going back to the United Kingdom and taking a couple weeks off before playing the Scottish and then the Open Championship.

“I think more so than anything else it will just be good for me mentally to take a little bit of a break and, yeah, as I said, get back to my neck of the woods, get back to the U.K. for a little bit, excited for that. I’ve alluded to the fact I probably haven’t taken enough time off or time to reflect after what happened in April, so I’m excited to do a little bit of that over these next two weeks,” McIlroy said after his final round in Connecticut.

What McIlroy is talking about wanting is exactly what Dr. Graham would prescribe.

“After you’ve had time to just enjoy it and do something completely different, get some balance back, then just take a little time and redefine your purpose,” Dr. Graham says. “What is my mission here? Some players have to even go back and say, Why am I competing? And then find that motivating goal. And then structure their life around that.”

Just because McIlroy has felt a bit unlike himself after completing the Slam doesn’t mean he’ll feel that way forever.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-101073" class="size-full wp-image-101073" src="https://golfdigestme.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Rory-McIlroy-Image-by-Harry-How.jpg" alt="Rory McIlroy.
Lydia Ko achieved a long-term goal of qualifying for the LPGA Hall of Fame, which is notorious for being one of the hardest to get into in sports. By winning gold at the Olympics in Paris, she earned her final point to qualify and was asked to compare what she went through with what McIlroy is experiencing.

“I thought my life or maybe the way I thought about myself would change when I got in the Hall of Fame and did a lot of the things I wanted to do before it actually happened, and I’m sure Rory is thinking the same in similar parts, where everybody was like, Oh, Masters is the one he was missing. Like, what if? And then he did it. And as much as I’m sure he’s so happy and relieved, he’s just as good the day before he won it,” Ko said. “I think that’s what I realized most, and that’s what made me realize I’ve still got to go out there and practice and put in the time to play well the week after.”

“We’re greedy in that sense, like nothing will fulfill us fully until we’re done,” Ko continued. “I think that’s the reason why we play. That’s why he’s at his level because of his competitiveness.”

There’s no right or wrong reaction to achieving a long-term goal. There’s just the reality of what certain personalities experience. McIlroy’s experience isn’t what was expected. He doesn’t look like a man who’s had the weight of the world lifted from his shoulders, ready to win any tournament he enters. Yet.

There’s a “Big Four” for fashion weeks: Paris, Milan, New York and London. But it might be time to add in a fifth, as Augusta National has somehow become just as integral when it comes to the very niche (but equally important!) world of golf fashion.

Between Jason Day’s controversial Malbon looks to the critical Masters scripting that every brand drops weeks before the major to loud tees becoming the norm, golf fashion lives and dies at Augusta National. And now, it’s time to add a new trendsetter to this vaunted list: Cam Smith.

Cameron Smith bringing a more "formal approach" to his practice session on Wednesday at the Masters. pic.twitter.com/DnHxjWyOJG

There are formal looks and then there are formal looks, and Smith is certainly pulling off the latter. A full suit jacket during an Augusta National Wednesday practice session is certainly something we haven’t seen before, and even the “On the Range” broadcasters felt the need to comment … and chuckle.

“This we don’t see that often. Looks like a 36 regular. Cam Smith, a very formal approach to his practice session earlier today. I mean, if he buttons it, does the button pop? Is that why he’s going no button? It matches the pants, too, which is a good look.”

It appears that this look is coming from a partnership between Cam Smith, Ripper Golf Club and luxury golf brand Greyson Clothiers. The team dropped a sneak peek last week, but we can’t say we expected this look to make it all the way to the Augusta National range.

LIV Golf’s official X/Twitter account made sure to add in a “love to see it,” just to remind everyone where Smith’s been playing golf nowadays.

This isn’t that surprising as the Masters has become the hub of debuting new style trends, especially for a game that has become more and more in vogue as of late. Shameless plug, but we just dropped our own Style Issue. That’s how far things have come!

Perhaps Cam Smith saw that he didn’t make our “Best Dressed Golfers on Tour” list and felt the need to throw his name into the conversation. To be fair, this is certainly memorable.

We’re excited to see what’s next for Smith & Co. Perhaps a leather jacket on Moving Day or some penny loafers at the par-3 contest. If Cam Smith is in the final group on Sunday, we might be seeing the first August National tuxedo. And we know there’s one jacket Smith wants more than anything. We’re betting he’d trade all these looks for something green.

Don’t expect LIV Golf to receive a formal invitation to the Masters anytime soon.

Earlier this year, the USGA became the first governing body to provide players from the LIV Golf League a direct pathway into a men’s major championship. Because LIV’s competitive makeup failed to qualify the league for Official World Golf Ranking points, many LIV players who haven’t won majors and previously used the OWGR exemptions to get into the elite fields have seen their chances of earning spots into the sport’s four biggest tournaments diminish. But for this year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont, a full exemption will be awarded to the top player who is not otherwise qualified for the field and in the top three of the 2025 LIV Golf Individual Standings as of May 19. Additionally, exemptions into Final Qualifying will be awarded to the top 10 players from the 2025 LIV Golf Individual Standings as of April 7.

Five days later, the R&A announced a new provision for the top player in the LIV individual ranking not already qualified to get a spot after LIV’s event in Dallas, which is being held June 27-29. The Open is set for July 17-20.

But speaking Wednesday, Augusta National and Masters chairman Fred Ridley downplayed the idea that the Saudi-backed circuit have an annual qualifying criteria carved out for the tournament.

“I think that some of the issues that have been raised in connection with world golf rankings, and that is pathways for players to come and go on the LIV Tour as well as the team aspect of the LIV Golf, certainly creates some concern in that regard,” Ridley said. “As it relates to the USGA and the R&A, they certainly act independently. We respect their decisions. We are an invitational tournament.”

Ridley did say the club will continue to evaluate individual international invitations on a case-by-case basis. For the past two years, LIV’s Joaquin Niemann has received special exemptions, particularly for his success outside LIV-sanctioned events, although it’s worth noting that in both instances LIV was not named in the announcement.

As for the ongoing schism in professional golf—with worries the cold war between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment may reheat after a breakdown in negotiations—Ridley expressed his hope for the world’s best to reunite for more than four tournaments a year.

“I’m not really in a position to say what form that should take as far as how the two organizations should come together, what legal structure that may be or what the financial aspects of that may be, but what I would do and what I am doing is just encouraging again … sometimes if you start kind of at eye level, and that is to encourage cooperation and trying to figure out a way to get something done, regardless of what the structure of it is, to where everyone can play together again,” Ridley said. “So I’m going to continue to be saying that and encouraging the leaders of the organizations involved to try to work together to come up with a solution. But I think we all agree that four times a year is not enough to have the great players of the game together.”

There are 12 LIV Golf members in this week’s Masters field, including past winners in Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson. Additionally, new LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil is expected to be on the grounds this week, a guest of Augusta National Golf Club.

The Masters Par 3 Contest is something of an anomaly in pro golf. Holes-in-one are a dime a dozen, the etiquette is atrocious and guys go out of their way NOT to win. In an environment like that, it takes a lot to earn the attention of the masses, but don’t that tell that to Sammy Spieth. On Wednesday, Jordan Spieth’s first-born delivered the signature highlight of the 2025 Par 3 Contest with a single swing of his pint-sized driver. Watch it and weep tears of joy, for the Masters is finally, officially here.

Let it rip, Sammy Spieth. #themasters pic.twitter.com/oqTqIp2uSC

Way to get your hips square, Sammy! Just like his old man, Sammy isn’t afraid to grip it and rip it. Though dear old dad did show some caution on Wednesday. By allowing Sammy to tee off on the 2nd hole, Papa Spieth became ineligible to win the Par 3 Contest. As the superstition goes, no one to ever win the Masters’ short-course showdown has ever gone on to win the green jacket in the same year, so clearly Jordan has his eyes on a bigger prize.

Will see if Spieth’s newfound pragmatism holds up on the course this weekend, but in the meantime it looks like Sammy will keep his dad’s endearingly chaotic spirit alive and well.

Less than three weeks and counting. That’s how much longer golf fans have to wait until the start of the 2025 Masters and the beginning of the men’s major golf season. Everyone got an early taste here in March, watching Rory McIlroy pull out a playoff victory at the Players Championship two weeks ago and speculating as to whether this helps or hurts his chances of winning at Augusta National and (finally) closing out the career Grand Slam he’s been striving for since 2015. Plus the Valspar Championship had a dramatic finish between Viktor Hovland and Justin Thomas, two other popular players looking like they could be factors in Georgia.

Mind you, anticipation for the Masters has been bubbling ever since late December when Augusta National started sending out its first batch of invitation to players who had already claimed spots in the field.

Signs of the season. #themasters pic.twitter.com/iiYgmQlDcW

To date, there are 92 people expected to play in the tournament, not including past champions who aren’t playing and two amateurs who qualified but turned pro and are no longer eligible. The number grew last month when Augusta National announced that Nicolai Hojgaard and Joaquin Niemann had accepted special invitations to compete, and most recently when Justin Hastings won the Latin America Amateur Championship and Joe Highsmith won the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches, the last tour pro to be added to the field with a victory.

There remains two qualification criteria still open for players to qualify to compete this April:

Winners of upcoming PGA Tour events that award a full-point allocation (Houston Open and Valero Texas Open)

The 50 leaders on the final Official World Golf Ranking published during the week prior to the tournament

This second critiera will become an interesting narative in the coming weeks. Players Championship runner-up J.J. Spaun, for instance, jump from 57th to 25th in the World Ranking and thus has essentially claimed a spot in the Masters now. And there are a few others that are projected to do so, or sit right near the bubble, according to social media’s resident OWGR expert, Nosferatu:

Augusta National announced Wednesday that Joaquin Niemann and Nicolai Hojgaard have received special exemptions to play in the 2025 Masters.

Hojgaard, 23, finished T-16 at Augusta National last spring in his Masters debut. The 2023 Ryder Cupper is currently 60th in the Official World Golf Ranking. His twin brother, Rasmus, will also be competing in the Masters, marking the first time that twins will compete in the same tournament.

Niemann, 26, won twice on LIV Golf last year and captured the Asian Tour’s PIF Saudi International in December. However, because LIV Golf has failed to meet criteria for Official World Golf Ranking points, many of its players continue to plummet down the OWGR standings, thus restricting their opportunities to qualify for major championships. Though many of LIV’s constituents have long complained about the league’s failed accreditation, Niemann has been especially vocal on the subject.

Niemann did receive a special invite last year, spurred by winning the 2023 Australian Open. Interestingly, for the second straight year, Augusta’s press release failed to mention his play on LIV Golf. It will be Niemann’s sixth Masters appearance. His best finish is a T-16 in 2023.

“In support of Augusta National’s efforts to develop interest in golf globally, deserving international players not otherwise qualified have been invited throughout the tournament’s history,” Augusta National and Masters chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement. “The tradition continues as we welcome Nicolai and Joaquin back to the Masters, as both players have showcased their talent while competing around the world. We look forward to their arrival this April.”

This is the 16th time the Masters has given special invitations since the tournament implemented OWGR as an exemption category. Last year it awarded three invites to Niemann, Ryo Hisatsune and Thorbjorn Olesen. The invites bring the 2025 tournament field to 87 competitors.

The 2025 Masters begins April 10. Scottie Scheffler is the defending champ.
