With his first LIV Golf individual victory coupled with a strong overall season, Patrick Reed has put himself squarely in the United States Ryder Cup team discussion.

Last week at LIV Golf Dallas presented by Aramco, the 4Aces GC star showed off all the attributes that make him the type of player who thrives when conditions are tough. Maridoe Golf Club proved to be a difficult test. The rough was thick, the greens were firm and fast, and wind was a factor.

RELATED: Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2025 LIV Golf Dallas event

After winning a four-man playoff with an incredible shot on the first playoff hole followed by a 16-1/2 foot putt for birdie, Reed spoke about the challenge of the golf course.

“You definitely not only had to hit the ball solid, but you had to manage your game around this place because with the wind swirling and pumping quite a bit and with how hot it was,” he said. “You know how it is in Texas – one minute there’s no wind, the next minute it’s blowing 20. It was a mental and physical grind out there and luckily, we were able to get the job done.”

The Ryder Cup in late September will be held at Bethpage Black, a difficult 7,468-yard par-71 layout that challenges players with exceptional length and punishing rough, demanding both mental and physical resilience. Reed thrives on such demanding layouts, having previously conquered Bethpage Black at the 2016 Barclays with a score of 9 under, a winning total right in his wheelhouse.

Reed, dubbed “Captain America” for his past Ryder Cup heroics, has already proven he has the grit to thrive in such a test. His 7-3-2 record across three Ryder Cups, including a perfect 3-0-0 in singles, are evidence that he’s built for match play. At Hazeltine in 2016, he outdueled Rory McIlroy in a Sunday showdown that still echoes in golf lore. Reed made birdie after birdie with fist pumps that ignited the crowd. New York golf fans, known for being loud and raucous, would embrace Reed’s fire and flare for the dramatic. They don’t want golf claps; they want a fighter who thrives under pressure.

Reed’s LIV Golf breakthrough in Dallas, which moved him into fourth in the league’s season-long individual race, should come as no surprise. Starting with his win last November at the Hong Kong Open, he’s made 19 worldwide starts, with nine top 10s and 15 top 25s. In those eight months, just two other Americans on the major tours have won multiple individual stroke-play tournaments – Scottie Scheffler and athis year’s U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley.

On golf’s biggest stages, he finished 3rd at the Masters and T23 at the U.S. Open. In major championships this season, he ranks 9th among all players who’ve played at least 8 major rounds in strokes gained total per round.

The 34-year-old is showcasing a resurgent all-around game in 2025, averaging 1.01 strokes gained total per round – the highest in four years. As one of the world’s top scramblers and putters, Reed’s skills are tailor-made for the Ryder Cup, with his short-game prowess evidenced by his strokes gained around the green (+0.24) this season, which is consistent with his elite numbers over multiple years.

Bethpage Black’s punishing rough and demanding greens require finesse, versatility, and the ability to get up-and-down from tricky lies. Statistically, Reed’s best putting surface throughout his career has been Poa annua, the same grass used on Bethpage Black’s greens. In his two starts at the course in his career, he’s gained an average of 0.38 strokes per round putting.

READ MORE: Ryder Cup 2025: Is Keegan Bradley as playing captain a nightmare scenario or a big deal about nothing?

Over the past three months, Reed has quietly played his way into peak form.  His iron play has been a standout, gaining nearly 0.92 strokes per round on approach. Last week in Dallas, he gained 1.90 strokes per round on approach. He also hit 72.2% of his greens in regulation, which ranked 3rd in the field.

But it’s Reed’s mentality that seals the case. Bethpage doesn’t reward saints. It rewards those who deliver, and Reed always does.

His recent form, highlighted by his playoff victory at LIV Golf Dallas last week, signals his readiness for the Ryder Cup, an event he admitted is important to him. “It’s always on your mind,” Reed said. “Anytime I get to represent our country, it means a lot to me. For me personally, I’m always thinking about trying to make every team. Obviously being a part of LIV where we don’t get points, it’s an uphill battle, but really for me it’s focused on playing great golf and having a chance. It’s really going to come down to the Open Championship, having a chance to win there.”

His passion for representing the U.S. drives his pursuit, despite the challenge of earning Ryder Cup points outside of LIV Golf. Now, The Open Championship at Royal Portrush, where Reed finished 10th in 2019, looms as a critical opportunity.

In 2023, Bradley was left off the U.S. Ryder Cup team, despite a strong season, including a win at the Travelers Championship. After the selections were announced, Bradley didn’t hold back, saying. “I’m disappointed, but I understand it’s a tough decision. I just feel like the process sometimes favors the guys in the inner circle, and I’m not in that club.” His exclusion stung; a wound deepened by the sense that personal ties trumped merit. Bradley, now the 2025 U.S. captain, knows that pain firsthand.

It would be a shame if Bradley, of all people, repeated that mistake with Reed. To sideline a player of Reed’s caliber – whose Ryder Cup record, course fit and current form make him worthy of a Captain’s pick – because of politics or cliques would betray the spirit of competition Bradley himself championed. Bethpage Black doesn’t care about popularity contests; it demands warriors. Reed is that warrior.

Bradley, who fought to prove his worth, should give Reed the chance to do the same. Anything less would be a disservice to the team, the fans, and the Cup itself.

Patrick Reed took a huge lead into the final round of the LIV Golf event at Maridoe Golf Club. He birdied the first hole and was standing on a whopping five-shot lead. It appeared as if the day would have little drama and be nothing more than a smooth stroll to victory.Five holes later, when Reed bogeyed the sixth hole, his lead had completely evaporated. Moments later, Harold Varner III bogeyed the ninth hole and Reed held a one-shot lead, but that’s essentially the way the whole roller-coaster afternoon went outside Dallas.Reed was up, he was down, he was tied, he was down and eventually, somehow, found his way into a four-man playoff with Jinichiro Kozuma, Louis Oosthuizen and Paul Casey.

Playing the treacherous 546-yard, par-4 18th hole, Oosthuizen hit his tee shot into the water and was essentially eliminated. Kozuma and Casey both made par. Then, Reed, standing over a sliding, downhill birdie putt from just inside 20 feet smoothly rolled in the putt for victory.

RELATED: Here’s the prize money payout for each player at LIV Golf Dallas

He shot three-over 75 on the day but the birdie, only the third of the round on the home hole, was the only thing that mattered. Reed finally captured his first LIV Golf win and it came, of all places, in his home state of Texas.

“I tried to mess it up,” said Reed, who was playing in his 41st LIV event. “After making birdie on the first I seemed to leave every birdie short. I told myself, ‘hey, the putts have to start falling.’ For the most part I felt like I was hitting the ball fine, I just had a lot of missed putts.”

Here’s a smattering of events that show what a topsy-turvy day it was for the 2018 Masters champ. When Tyrrell Hatton birdied the eighth hole he was tied with Reed. Reed went back up one on the next hole over Hatton and Varner. When Reed bogeyed the eighth hole he was tied with Hatton and Varner. Reed bogeyed Nos. 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 on the opening stretch. Kozuma birdied three of four holes to come from nowhere and tied Reed at six under at one point. Hatton made birdie at 13 and was tied with Kozuma and Reed. When Casey birdied the 13th he was tied at the top. At one point Hatton, Kozuma and Casey were tied with Reed for the lead. A bogey on the last pushed Hatton out of the eventual playoff. Kozuma birdied the 17th to take a one-shot lead but bogeyed the 18th.

Somehow Reed overcame all of that and found a way to win.

With just two events remaining on the 2024 LIV Golf League, it’s still all to play for in both the Individual and the Team standings.

Last time out in Greenbrier, Brooks Koepka pipped Jon Rahm in a play-off for his fifth Individual title. But despite coming up short, Rahm overtook Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann in the season-long points race by less than three points, 195.17 to 192.20.

It’s the first time any player other than Niemann, who won two of the first three tournaments, has topped the individual standings this season. Those two will battle it out for the 2024 Individual Championship at this month’s LIV Golf Chicago, while Koepka still has an outside shot at the bonus-paying third place.

Host for LIV Golf Chicago is Bolingbrook Golf Club, designed by architect Arthur Hills and partner Steve Forrest, the course is located just 30 miles from downtown Chicago, and features a 156-yard island green on its signature 15th hole.

The 7,104-yard layout offers plenty of rolling fairways and elevated greens, as the course winds it’s way around seven different lakes. It has played host previously on the PGA Tour’s Forme Tour in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, but now takes a leap up to this year’s LIV Golf Chicago event, where it will be the stage for where we crown the individual champion.

We then can also confirm which players are finalised in the Lock Zone, Open Zone and Drop Zone…

LIV Golf

How does the Team Championships work?

Once we wrap up the Individual title in Chicago it’s onto Dallas for the Team Championships where we will have a better look at which team is leading
the standings.

All 13 LIV teams will compete in the 2024 LIV Golf League Team Championship at Maridoe Golf Club, with the top three receiving first-round byes and automatically qualifying for Saturday’s semifinals (that is already confirmed with the Crushers and Legion XIII who mathematically have already make it through prior to Chicago).

The remaining 10 teams will play in five quarterfinal matches on Friday, with matchup determined during a live drawing of team captains during tournament week. The five winners advance to the semifinals, with the semifinal winners competing for the team title on Sunday. The winning team taking home $14 million.

Maridoe Golf Club is situated north of Dallas and having only opened in 2017, it has gained a strong reputation for it’s strong layout of length, well placed bunkers and undulating greens.

A different venue from last year, but still Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Charles Howell III and Anirban Lahiri took the Crushers to the team title, as they look to do the double again this year…. Which if you didn’t know, is in Bryson’s home town.

The LIV Golf League filled the last open spot on its 2024 schedule Wednesday when officials announced that Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, will be the site for its season-ending $50 million LIV Golf Team Championship.

The Dallas-Fort Worth-area course, designed by Steve Smyers and opened in 2017, tips out at 7,817 yards and has previously played host to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball among various top level amateur events. During the spring of 2020, when COVID stopped play on the PGA Tour, course owner Albert Huddleston hosted tour pros for two 54-hole tournaments that doubled as charity fundraisers won by Scottie Scheffler and Brandon Wu.

“Our LIV Golf players are looking forward to playing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with its great golf tradition,” said LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman in a press release.

The LIV Golf Team Championship will be held Sept. 20-22, employing the same knockout format it has the past two seasons, when it was played at Trump National Doral in Miami, to produce a team winner for 2024. The competition will be a mix of team stroke play and match play.

All 13 LIV teams will compete, with the top three receiving first-round byes and automatically qualifying for Saturday’s semifinals. The remaining 10 teams will play in five quarterfinal matches on Friday, with matchup determined during a live drawing of team captains during tournament week. The five winners advance to the semifinals, with the semifinal winners competing for the team title on Sunday. The winning team will take home $14 million.

A year ago, Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Charles Howell III and Anirban Lahiri led Crushers Golf Club to the team title. The Crushers are first in team points thus far in 2024, followed by Legion XIII, the league’s expansion team captained by Jon Rahm. In third place is Ripper Golf Club, the all-Australian squad led by Cameron Smith.

As the PGA Tour eyes a June restart for 2019-’20 season in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a handful of tour pros anxious to compete again will reportedly get that opportunity much sooner.

According to GolfChannel.com, officials at Maridoe Golf Club outside Dallas are organizing a 54-hole fundraiser that will be played next week and include the likes of Viktor Hovland, Scottie Scheffler, Harry Higgs and, possibly, Jordan Spieth.

The event, set for April 28-30, is expected to have a 72-player members-only field. However, members at the nearly three-year-old private facility in Carrollton, Texas, include the aforementioned tour pros, along with former Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and former NBA guard Deron Williams, who are both expected to compete.

The tournament will include three flights based on handicaps, according to GolfChannel.com, with the elite flight consisting of 51 pros and amateurs competing from nearly 7,900 yards. There’s a $250 entry fee per person with proceeds going in part to the club’s full-time caddies who haven’t been able to work during the pandemic.

Spieth hopes to be a late addition to the field, according to the report, but has a PGA Tour Players Advisory Council meeting on Tuesday that might conflict with the first round. Also playing are a handful of high profile college golfers, including recently named All-Americans Quade Cummins (Oklahoma), Cooper Dossey (Baylor), Pierceson Coody (Texas) and Austin Eckroat (Oklahoma State).

Maridoe owner Albert Huddleston told GolfChannel.com that the event will embrace social-distancing guidelines. Carts and caddies will be prohibited and no bunker rakes will be out on the course (a walking scorer with each group will stay on the cart path and rake bunkers when needed). Each participant can only have one guest, can arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before tee times and is asked to avoid coming within six feet of fellow competitors. The club’s range will be converted into a par-3 course and available for players to warm up quickly before their rounds.

Since its opening in 2017, Maridoe has aspired to host national and regional competitions. The course is scheduled to host the Southern Amateur in July, a college event in the fall being televised by Golf Channel and the 2021 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
