Karim Salaam is rebuilding golf and keeping a country’s pride on the map

There was a time when Lebanon had four golf courses. Today, only one remains. The rest were lost to conflict. Even that surviving course, the Golf Club of Lebanon, was once reduced to rubble during the 1982 invasion.

Karim Salaam (below) has a first-hand experience of it all and knows the story better than most. His father, Salim Ali Salaam, was both President of the Lebanese Golf Federation (LGF) and Founder of the Arab Golf Federation (AGF).

Karim Salaam. Image supplied by Lebanese Golf Federation

Salim refused to let the sport of golf disappear in Lebanon, despite its struggles.“It’s a true example of Lebanese resilience at its best” Karim recalls.

Golf in Lebanon has endured a turbulent period over the past five years, from the end of 2019 to the end of 2024. Like the country itself, the club faced a series of extraordinary challenges: a revolution, a financial collapse, a global pandemic, a massive explosion that devastated half of Beirut, and even a 90-day war that placed the club’s location under direct threat. “Through all of this, the commitment of the club’s stakeholders and employees never wavered. Instead of retreating, they pushed forward, working not only to preserve the club but also to expand participation through various outreach programs, ensuring the game continues to grow despite the adversity.”

“Through it all, the Golf Club of Lebanon remains more than a golf course. Alongside its 18 holes, it hosts tennis, squash, swimming, taekwondo, football and basketball. It’s a place for community.”

Image supplied by Lebanese Golf Federation

For Karim, who has taken over the reins as President of the new-look Lebanese Golf Federation, they have built further foundations with a three-year plan launched at the end of 2024.

One focus is grassroots development. The Federation’s Golf in Schools programme introduces the sport to pupils through The R&A’s Unleash Your Drive initiative. Its companion project, Golf for All, works with people and children with special needs. “We want to open the game to everyone,” Karim says, “not just those who already know it.”

Image supplied by Lebanese Golf Federation

The second pillar is raising the standard of competition. By adding WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking) events like the Lebanese Spring Open and Lebanese Junior Open, local Arab players can earn points without leaving the country.

“The upcoming Lebanese International Amateur Open in September is another chance to draw talent from abroad while giving homegrown players a bigger stage to perform on.”

The third is tapping into the Lebanese golfing diaspora. “There are nearly four times as many Lebanese golfers abroad as in Lebanon,” Karim explains. “That network we have proved invaluable when security concerns limited local travel last year. Diaspora players stepped up in representing our country, and the victories showed.”

The fourth is visibility. The Federation’s improved relationship with the press means results now land in local headlines and even international outlets. “When Lara Bakhour won the European Juniors U18 Championship, she got a phone call from our President Joseph Aoun, that was huge for us all!

“In the junior ranks, two of the three girls who attended the Arab Golf Federation’s Elite Sports Scholarship Camp in Riyadh have now earned spots at Florida’s IMG Academy for the next three years. It’s incredible, really.”

Running anything in Lebanon means working around unpredictability. Just a few weeks ago, the Lebanese Golf Federation (below) joined Dr. Nora Beyrakdarian, the Minister of Youth and Sports with a Sports for All tour, bringing multiple sports to cities across the country. The first stop was golf, in the South Lebanon, which drew big crowds despite the region’s recent hardships.

“Everytime someone knocks us down, we stand up again,” Karim says. “That’s Lebanon. And that’s golf here too.”

Golf in Lebanon now needs the opportunity to grow wider. They’ve tackled the problem by staging more internationally recognised amateur events like the Lebanese Spring Open and Lebanese Junior Open. Up next is the Lebanese International Amateur Open, scheduled for 26 – 28 September. The tournament offers divisions for men, women and juniors plus awards WAGR points. “For a small federation, these are big logistics and a publicity test. Given the recent instability, sport is a way to show that Lebanon is still a destination,” Karim says. “Even with just one golf course we can host international standard events.”

Back in April the Cedar Golf Championship, an event on the Arab Golf Series, was played at Al Zorah in Ajman, United Arab Emirates. The twist being was that the Cedar Championship was organised by the Lebanese Golf Federation but hosted by the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF). “It was the first time a country hosted a tournament on behalf of another nation,” Karim notes. “It showed the strength of our federation ties and the UAE’s support. It was a gesture of solidarity as we emerged from conflict.”

The importance of the Arab Golf Series events brings together regional talent across the Middle East and gives local juniors a chance to test themselves against an international field, without occurring the cost of long overseas trips.

This then creates a ripple effect. Better rankings attract better fields. Better fields bring more attention and therefore more sponsors.

Image supplied by Lebanese Golf Federation

The Lebanese population that lives abroad is a sporting advantage. Karim estimates there are nearly four times as many Lebanese golfers living overseas as there are in Lebanon. When security issues made travel difficult last year the diaspora filled in. “Players representing Lebanon who are based in the United States, the UAE and Europe kept the country visible in international events. The diaspora stepped up and ensured Lebanon stayed represented. We had some important results, despite limited resources.”

That diaspora connection also opened doors for partnerships and training opportunities. Since 2024 the EGF has hosted a summer training camp in Morocco and has welcomed all Arab nations to join. This past summer, Lebanon sent four juniors who were joined by players from Palestine and Oman. The shared camp includes coaching, builds networks, sets standards and exposes the players to regional competition that their home structure may sometimes struggle to provide.

Karim is mostly proud of the progression that Lebanon’s women and girls are having in the game. “Right now the girls are making more noise than the boys,” he says with a smile.

“Elena Zreik, Lara Bakhour and Victoria Richani have all pushed into international visibility. Victoria’s recent run included qualifying for the USGA World Teen Championship where she made the cut and finished tied for third.

“Vanessa Richani, became the first Lebanese woman to reach the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship, she is now aiming at a professional career. Then there is Yasmeen El Husseini, just nine years old, who is one to watch for the future!”

Lebanese Golf Federation (Image supplied by Lebanese Golf Federation)

The success across Arab golf is down to the structure and timing. The Arab Golf Federation is investing in regional development thanks to Golf Saudi, that has helped add resources. Clubs and federations around the region are now shifting their view of golf from an elite hobby to a national asset.

“With the AGF strategic plan we have a pyramid structure, and the ultimate goal is to produce a Major champion from the Arab world.” Karim then points out Morocco’s Adam Bresnu, a recent breakthrough figure who became the first Arab-born player to make the cut in a DP World Tour Rolex Series event at the 2025 Hero Dubai Desert Classic. “It was such an emotional moment for us all there watching at Emirates Golf Club. He is such a great young man, with a lot of Arab people so proud and inspired by him.”

The LGF’s job is to create a pathway and remove barriers. Free junior programmes, local WAGR events, regional training camps and diaspora engagement are all pieces of the strategy. The next challenge is converting those pieces into something durable.

For a sport often presented as private and exclusive, the Golf Club of Lebanon behaves like a public square. “It is the place people gather, meet, and compete. It is where a child first holds a club and where our national team trains. It exists because people kept choosing to rebuild, despite the odds.”

That’s a fact of how sport in Lebanon has carried on through displacement and economic turbulence.

That’s the drive that matters to both the Lebanese players and its fans. It also matters to a sport that is trying to grow in a crowded field of issues.

“What Lebanon can do is make sure that the next generation has the chance to try, to fail, and to improve.

“Being involved with golf in Lebanon and the Arab Golf Federation is a privilege and an emotional connection to my father’s work.

“I’m not sure if he imagined exactly where we’d be today, but he always believed golf had an important place in the Arab world.”

Welcome to your September edition of Golf Digest Middle East for 2025.

This month’s cover story dives into Keegan Bradley, who now faces the biggest test of his career as U.S. Ryder Cup captain. Bradley has thrived in the heat before, but leading Team USA places him under a different kind of pressure, one that could define his legacy.

We also track the latest developments from the PIF Global Series. After a headline-making stop in London, all eyes now shift to Houston as the series continues to shape the female game.

On the G4D Tour, Kipp Popert continues to push boundaries in the game. Already one of the most decorated players in the adaptive space, he now has his sights set on a fourth straight title at Wentworth.

Closer to home, Karim Salaam is doing his part to keep golf alive in Lebanon. With resources scarce and challenges everywhere, Salaam’s work is both rebuilding a sport and protecting a nation’s pride.

In our “How To Play” section, European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald shares a bunker technique that will help you eliminate fat shots and play with confidence under pressure. Plus, Michael Thorbjornsen’s swing is under the microscope in our latest analysis.

For course lovers, we spotlight Bethpage Black, one of golf’s most demanding tests, and break down what makes a great matchplay venue. Then, from the brutal stretches of Bethpage to the artistry of Cypress Point, we uncover the elements that separate good from great!

All this and plenty more in the September 2025 edition of Golf Digest Middle East.

The Lebanese Golf Federation, in collaboration with the Emirates Golf Federation, successfully hosted the inaugural Cedars Golf Championship at Al Zorah Golf and Yacht Club in Ajman, United Arab Emirates.

Sixty-six amateur golfers competed for World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, Arab Golf Series points, and a coveted spot in the upcoming HotelPlanner Tour event – the UAE Challenge at Al Zorah.

How the Arab Golf Series is paving the way for future champions

The tournament was played over 54 holes, culminating in an 18-hole Stableford format for the final round.

In a dramatic Men’s Division play-off, UAE National Team player Sam Mullane emerged victorious after six tense holes. He battled against Mikhail Pinto and Dan Bryne, both fellow Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) members. With a sponsor’s invite to next week’s HotelPlanner Tour event at stake, Mullane’s victory was significant.

However, recognising the high level of competition and sportsmanship, the Emirates Golf Federation granted exemptions to both Pinto and Bryne, ensuring their participation in next week’s event alongside Mullane.

For over 15 years the soul of Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship has been the journey its competitors have taken to get here. And boy, have there been some journeys. That the winner is afforded starts in the Masters and Open Championship are just the cherries on top—as life-changing as those major experiences are.

Look no further Rachid Akl. At 66, the veteran Lebanon amateur golfer is the oldest player in the field at the iconic Taiheiyo Club this week. Last Friday, Akl was sitting in his airplane seat ready to fly from Beirut to Jordan and onto Tokyo. When the plane was delayed, Akl began to wonder what caused the hold up. He looked outside and saw bombs dropping on the southern suburbs of Beirut. The explosions were targeting the militant group Hezbollah, which is in the midst of a devastating conflict with Israel.

Who are the Middle Eastern countries and players competing in the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship

“During the takeoff from Beirut, we heard from inside the plane, 10 or 15 rockets [landed] near us, I think 500 meters,” Akl said. This was only a week after Akl had won the Senior Cyprus Open in the middle of the Mediterranean. As the plane took off from Beirut, Akl saw enormous clouds of smoke.

But Akl was not going to miss his ninth start in the Asia-Pacific Amateur, even if he had to avoid checking his phone during practice rounds out of fear of distressing news. “I love to play golf. My life is golf. I wanted to represent my country in this tournament,” he says.

It’s not hard to see the reverence for which amateur golfers in the region have for the Asia-Pacific Amateur. Launched in 2009 by former Augusta National chairman Billy Payne in an effort to grow the game, it is jointly run by the home of the Masters and the R&A. The move quickly yielded results. Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, won the Asia-Pacific Amateur in 2010 and 2011. The 2012 champion, Guan Tianlang of China, became the youngest player to make the cut in PGA Tour history at the 2013 Masters when he was 14 years and five months old.

This week, at the Taiheiyo Club, it’s being staged at the foot of Mount Fuji. Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman were winners of the Taiheiyo Masters in their prime and Tiger Woods’ chipped in for eagle to join a playoff at the 2001 WGC World Cup.

Akl’s score and position on Day 1—a 96 to sit in last place—doesn’t reflect his ability. He’s a scratch golfer who plays out of the Golf Club of Lebanon, the nation’s only course. Earlier this year, he won a World Amateur Golf Ranking official event in Jordan.

On top of the leaderboard on Thursday was Indonesia’s Randy Bintang, a sublimely talented golfer who shares his last name with the most popular beer in his homeland. At the 2022 Asia-Pacific Amateur, he shot a 66 that included a championship record-equaling nine birdies.

“This is the biggest amateur tournament [I’ve] ever played, and this is my third here,” Bintang said Thursday. “I’m just starting to play my best. I’m really pleased with my game and the chance to play with the best players in the world.”

Dechen Lhendup of Bhutan plays a tee shot during Round 1 of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at the Taiheiyo Club in Gotemba, Japan – Chris Turvey

While the event excludes the top talent from the U.S. and Europe, there is some star power. Former Arizona State golfer Wenyi Ding—the amateur World No. 4 from China who is line for a DP World Tour card through its Global Amateur Pathway program—was the best player in the 120-strong field. He shot a first-round 67. Ding was among 35 former, current or future U.S. college golfers in the field. The 22 current collegiate golfers range from those at Stanford, Princeton, Purdue to the University of Florida.

Many of those are likely to turn pro. But the golfers who have been unearthed from nations with extremely limited access to golf are the success story of the championship.

There are 40 nations represented this week, from golf-rich countries like Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Korea, to emerging golf markets like Vietnam and Malaysia. Perhaps the most inspiring story comes from Bhutan, a remote country tucked in the eastern Himalayas between China and India. It has mountains higher than 23,000 feet above sea level. Television only came to Bhutan in 1999. There are just four nine-hole courses in the entire country, led by Royal Thimphu Golf Club, which sits at 8,000 feet above sea level. Bhutan golfer Dechen Lhendup made his debut at the Asia-Pacific Amateur on Thursday and, while he shot 91, several competitors saw far greater golf from him during practice rounds. Lhendup has competed in the Bangladesh Amateur Open and the Nepal Amateur Open. He often teaches younger players in golf clinics and will bring his Asia-Pacific experience back to Bhutan.

Quinnton Croker, the reigning Australian Amateur champion, played a practice round with Lhendup. “His game is impressive [especially] if that’s what he’s got to practice [in Bhutan],” Croker said. “I think it’s a very special opportunity for some of those young fellas to really get an eye for what the world is like and what they can achieve.”

Enrique Dimayuga, of the Philippines, a college golfer at Southern Methodist, said: “For [players from remote countries], I think it’s awesome opportunity and one day, hopefully, they can be like a trailblazer for more people to follow.”

Augusta National chairman, Fred Ridley, and R&A chief executive, Martin Slumbers, were at the Taiheiyo Club on Thursday as part of their host duties.

“This predates Martin and me, to my predecessor Billy Payne,” Ridley said. “[He] brought the Olympic Games to Atlanta in 1996 and had a real-world view of sport. It was his idea, collaborating with the R&A, to start this championship. While it might have been somewhat of an unconventional idea at the time, I think it’s proven to pay a lot of dividends.”

Since the 2022 Arab alliance partnership between the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation, the federations have hosted yearly training camps at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam Golf Club.

Players will be able to take full advantage of the club’s state-of-the-art driving range, short game, and practice facilities, and two 18-hole championship courses that are rated one of the best in the region.

The EGF has sent the UAE National Team coaches and additional high-level biomechanics and fitness performance coaches from South Africa and Great Britain to focus on player development and competition. These coaches will test and measure all aspects of the players game while creating a competitive interclub atmosphere between the federations.

“We are pushing the best out of our players and coaches, said General Abdallah Alhashmi, Vice Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation. Over the next three weeks, we will put our team to the test, and we will see how our players match up with other programs in the Arab Golf Federation. The Moroccan players have always led the way in being the top performers in Arab golf. By having this opportunity to train and compete against our brothers and sisters we will not only create a fun competitive atmosphere but also, we will find out the areas that we need to improve on as coaches and players. I want to thank the Moroccan Golf Federation which has welcomed the EGF with open arms.”

In addition to General Alhashmi, EGF officials Khalid Mubarak Al Shamsi, Secretary General and Akram Skaik, Director General will be attending the training camp.

“In the past 18 months, we have seen some major strides with our high-performance program, and we continue to see progress with our results. We have more ranked players and that is our strategy to reach our goal. Through our camps, training programs, and participation in international tournaments across Asia and Europe the 2024-2025 season will be exciting, General Alhashmi added.

Following the camp the UAE team will have several local and international events that the players will be competing in, including the Asian Amateur Championship, the Arab Golf Championships, and the GCC Golf Championships.

As part of its continuous dedication to bolstering its environmental strategy, the Golf Club of Lebanon (GCL) has implemented a range of measures in recent years aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and safeguarding the natural habitat on its premises.

One significant initiative involves the integration of a solar power plant into the Club’s existing electrical infrastructure, boasting a capacity of 78 kWp. This strategic move not only enhances the Club’s energy security but also alleviates its financial burden by yielding yearly savings of 98 MWh. This translates to avoiding the consumption of 44 tons of diesel, resulting in a substantial fuel bill savings of $39,500 at current prices. Impressively, the solar system has achieved a payback period of close to two years, making it not only environmentally beneficial but also economically advantageous.

Moreover, the solar system is estimated to prevent the emission of 117 tons of CO2 annually, totalling 3,000 tons over its lifespan of 20 to 25 years. To put this impact into perspective, it’s akin to permanently removing 128 cars from Lebanese roads. Beyond the evident reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the solar system also plays a crucial role in reducing the release of toxic gases like NOx and SO2, known for their associations with respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, as well as the formation of acid rain.

Furthermore, as part of its natural habitat preservation and restoration strategy, the GCL has undertaken the effort to plant 127 young pine trees. Over the next 30 to 40 years, these trees will reach full maturity and live for over 300 years, collectively sequestering 3 tons of CO2 per year. Besides the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the pine trees will enhance the overall air quality by producing oxygen and absorbing pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, ozone, and particulate matter.

Additionally, the pine trees will play a role in regulating the surrounding water cycle by absorbing and transpiring water, maintaining soil moisture levels, reducing surface runoff, and contributing to groundwater recharge, benefiting both ecosystems and human water supplies.
