Golf fans lamented Friday’s wind and pin placements (Just ask Scottie Scheffler) for causing a lack of fireworks on the leaderboard at Aronimink. But there was a bit of excitement around the cut line involving a major champion.

Justin Rose didn’t have his best stuff for the first two days at the PGA Championship, in large part, as our Shane Ryan writes, due to his struggles with those new irons. But the 2013 U.S. Open champ came up clutch when it mattered most.

Rose opened his second round with a double bogey and looked like he might not make the cut at Aronimink for much of the day. A bogey on the par-3 eighth, his penultimate hole of the day, put Rose at five over par. But after two good shots on the par-5 ninth to put himself around the green, the 45-year-old summoned the type of magic golf fans are used to seeing from him at the Ryder Cup. Have a look:

Justin Rose chips in for eagle to finish his round in style. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/kVoH39g7Fl

The Day 2 walk-off eagle vaulted Rose to three over par, ensuring he’d have a weekend tee time at the year’s second major. It’s not quite the same drama as having the lead on the back nine of the Masters like he did last month, but that’s the heart of a champion on display right there.

Major champion Justin Rose is set to make his professional debut in India with confirmation that the World Number Five will tee it up at the DP World India Championship from October 15-18, 2026.

Some of the best players in the world are set to gather once again at Delhi Golf Club for the highly-anticipated $4,000,000 event – including defending champion Tommy Fleetwood and back-to-back Masters winner Rory McIlroy.

Tommy Fleetwood – 2025 DP World India Championship – Getty Images

Rose has established himself at the top of the global game since claiming his first DP World Tour win in 2002, going on to win the U.S. Open in 2013 and the Olympic Gold Medal three years later. Earlier this season the former World Number One secured his 13th victory on the PGA TOUR.

The Englishman made his seventh Ryder Cup appearance at Bethpage Black last September, lifting the trophy for the fifth time as he helped Europe earn a first away win over the United States since 2012.

Global smart logistics provider DP World and the DP World Tour launched the DP World India Championship in 2025. Co-sanctioned with the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), the tournament features the largest prize fund ever offered for a DP World Tour event in India, and will once again take its place as part of the crucial Back 9 phase of the Race to Dubai.

Rose said: “I’ve played all over the world over the course of my career, and I’m excited to get the chance to add India to the list this season.

“I’ve heard so much about the country and how passionate the golf fans are, so I’m very much looking forward to teeing it up in the DP World India Championship for the first time and experiencing what Delhi has to offer.”

Rose joins fellow Englishman Fleetwood, who emerged victorious at the end of the thrilling inaugural event last season to claim his eighth DP World Tour title, as part of an incredible season for the Englishman who also won the FedExCup on the PGA TOUR, and made his fourth appearance in the Ryder Cup as part of the historic victory over the USA. McIlroy will also return to India in October after recently winning his sixth Major title and second Green Jacket at Augusta National.

The launch of the second edition of the DP World India Championship underscores India’s growing influence as a destination for elite golf and as a strategic market for DP World. The new tournament follows the success of the long-running Hero Indian Open, and further boosts the Tour’s momentum in the region.

Rory McIlroy Tommy Fleetwood DP World Clubhouse DP World India Championship

As the Tour’s title partner since 2022, and after becoming the Title and Official Umbrella Partner of the PGTI earlier this year, the tournament complements DP World’s broader sporting footprint in India, which includes partnerships with the Delhi Capitals, and grassroots programmes like the Second Life Container initiative and ‘Balls for Birdies’ campaign – both of which involve DP World donating golf balls, using its smart logistics network, to help grow the game and make it more accessible.

“Justin Rose has competed at the highest levels of the game worldwide throughout his career, making it a proud moment having India onto his schedule for the first time. At DP World, opening new markets and connecting the world is what we do, and the DP World India Championship is a powerful expression of that ambition.” said Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager, DP World India Subcontinent.

The DP World India Championship will be the eighth of nine events in the Back 9 phase of the 2026 Race to Dubai, building towards the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs and culminating in the DP World Tour Championship in November at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

How many more chances will Justin Rose have? Can he expect to hold a two-shot lead on the back nine of the Masters again? Can he keep whipping his 45-year-old body into fighting shape? Can his psyche continue to hit reset when he steps onto the grounds of Augusta National?

Just as Rory McIlroy answered every doubt in last year’s Masters win, Rose could have come to the sweetest peace with a victory on Sunday. Instead, he walked away with more kudos for his skill and grit, but the nagging feeling that he still couldn’t do enough to seize a green jacket.

Holding a two-shot lead after making three straight birdies to finish the front nine, Rose imploded by missing consecutive greens at 11 and 12 to make bogeys. His only birdie on the back came on the 15th, and he suffered another bogey at 17 in shooting a two-under-par 71 that left him in a four-way tie for third at 10-under, two shots behind McIlroy, the champion.

It was the Englishman’s fifth finish of fifth or better in his 21 Masters starts. (He first lost in a playoff to Sergio Garcia in 2017).

McIlroy edged by Rose this time by overcoming his own foibles by making four birdies and just one bogey over his last 12 holes.

“I feel like with a sudden death loss you kind of know you got to the house. You’ve done everything it took to win. Then it comes down to flick of a coin at times,” Rose said. “Whereas today I felt like, yeah, there was an opportunity to do better, so obviously that is frustrating for sure.”

In the galleries around Rose this week, there was almost a sense that patrons might have preferred to see the 13-time PGA Tour winner achieve redemption at course he dearly loves, rather than McIlroy go back-to-back. When Rose got into the lead on Sunday with a birdie on 8 and moved into a two-shot lead with another birdie at 9, the crowd seemed to be trying to will him to victory.

“They pulled for me all week long. I felt their encouragement and support,” Rose said. “At the end it kind of goes a little flat. It’s more of a sympathy than anything. But it was still nonetheless very beautiful. But, yeah, another little stinger.”

Rose was left to think about what happened at Amen Corner, where last year he charged with birdies on all three holes from 11 through 13. This time, he pushed his approach at 11 and couldn’t get up and down. At the 12th, he pulled his tee shot left and then fully chunked his chip, the ball not even getting on the green. He couldn’t birdie 13 either, three-putting the par 5 after what he called a “brave” approach.

“I was by no means kind of free and clear and was nowhere kind of close to having the job done, but I was right in position,” Rose said. “Amen Corner, without really hitting a bad shot, but just not good shot, not committed enough on maybe 11 shot, specifically.”

Rose was bidding to become the second-oldest player behind only Jack Nicklaus to win the Masters. Will he get another chance like this one? He looks at some of the much-older players—Fred Couples is still playing at 66 and Bernhard Langer, 68, retired from Augusta competition last year—=who have done well here.

“The guys get around this golf course,” Rose said. “It does show this course maybe more than anywhere suit maybe personal style or knowledge or whatever it might be.”

Augusta National suits him. The green jacket just hasn’t fit yet.

For many years now, few professional golfers have done—and do—as much right as Justin Rose.

Few have come on the scene as spectacularly as the 18-year-old amateur who holed out from 50 yards on the 72nd hole of the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale to tie for fourth place.

And while few have then debuted as a professional as miserably as Rose’s very public missing of 21 straight cuts, the debacle led to a painstaking recovery of confidence that evolved into one of the greatest career turnarounds the modern game has ever seen. Since 2010, Rose has 13 PGA Tour victories, a major championship and an Olympic gold medal, putting him on cusp of induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

And now, finally, few have aged as well as the still blooming Rose.

On Friday, the 45-year-old Englishman shot a three-under 69 to once again put himself on the leaderboard at the Masters with a score of five-under-par 139. Although he’s a distant seven behind the leader, Rory McIlroy, he’s just a stroke behind Patrick Reed and Sam Burns in a share of fourth.

Of course, it was McIlroy who bested Rose with a birdie on the first hole of sudden death at last year’s Masters, marking the second time Rose lost at Augusta National in a playoff and the third time he finished second.

Rose led that tournament by one after 36 holes, but after taking 38 putts in a 75 on Saturday, he’d trailed McIlroy by, yes, seven shots. Then on Sunday, Rose shot 66, capped by a rammed-home 20-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole to nearly pull off a miracle win. This year he has two rounds to make up that same margin.

Rose’s only reward from the 2025 tournament was a collective thank you from all the fans who wanted to see McIlroy finally win the career Grand Slam. But that lack of sympathy, from mortals and possibly also the golf gods, does not haunt Rose.

He made that clear early in the week, telling the media on Monday that he isn’t haunted or feels the Masters owes him anything.

“I’m very aware that I’ve had tough, tough losses here,” he said. “I also am aware that I enjoy this place.

“I don’t feel like I have to find something in myself to kind of do something different. I truly believe that. If you’re going to be willing to win them, you’ve got to be willing to kind of be on the wrong side of it as well.”

Rose’s round on Friday was highlighted by three straight birdies on ninth, 10th and 11th holes, a daunting stretch of par 4s more demanding against par than the famed triumvirate that makes up Amen Corner.

With a driver clubhead speed of 117.7 mph (right at the PGA Tour average), Rose was pumping out drives in excess of 300 yards on the dry and fast Augusta National fairways that left him approaches of 9-iron, 9-iron and 7-iron on his birdie run.

Rose bemoaned missing several putts inside 10 feet, especially an uphill right-to-left four footer for birdie on the 14th—that he described as “it’s like ugh.” There’s no doubt, though, Rose’s length off the tee is another indicator that he remains able to retain level remarkably close to that which won him the U.S. Open in 2013 and got him to World No. 1 for 13 weeks beginning in 2018.

Long respected for having a well-rounded skill set, Rose was asked after his second round if there are any parts of his game that he has gotten better at in his 40s.

“Am I better than World No. 1 me? I don’t know,” he said. “I feel I’m holding steady in some areas for sure. I feel good where I’m at. That’s all I know. I feel I can still chip away at certain things. I’ve still got tons of improvement. I feel like the bit that keeps me going is I do believe that next week I can be better than this week. Whether I am or not, who knows.”

If he wins on Sunday, he’ll have a better idea.

As Justin Rose polished off his 13th career PGA Tour victory on Sunday at Torrey Pines, I couldn’t help but say out loud, “wow, what an all-time great career this guy’s had,” to no one in particular. That was followed by an immediate, intrusive thought.

“Boy, we really throw around that ‘all-time’ tag liberally.”

In fairness, that’s true. Everyone is the GOAT. Every win is the most incredible win we’ve ever seen. Hyperbole rules all. There is no more room for nuance.

The thing is, Rose has had an all-time career, one that’s nearly spanned 30 years and has featured, in addition to those tour wins, the 2013 U.S. Open, the 2016 Olympic Gold Medal, 11 DP World Tour wins and seven Ryder Cup appearances. He will be in the World Golf Hall of Fame when it’s all said and done.

But it still does feel like there is something missing from that already sparkling resume. A second major, to be more specific. And perhaps even a third or fourth. As well as he’s playing right now at 45, he may be running out of time.

Given how highly touted he was as a young amateur and how elite he’s been for almost three decades, would his career be a disappointment if he doesn’t get one more big one? Does he need it to solidify everything that came before it? We tackled this topic on this week’s episode of The Loop podcast, which can be heard below.

After crushing both the Farmers Insurance Open field and the Torrey Pines Golf Courses in a record-breaking victory, Justin Rose was savouring the moment on Sunday evening when he mentioned himself being in the company of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler. Whoa. That put him in danger of producing hellish backlash from the cellar dwellers in the social media realm.

Then again, we challenge them to fault the premise.

At 45 years old, with now 13 PGA Tour victories, an Olympic gold medal and a bunch of special moments in the Ryder Cup, Rose has learned a thing or a hundred about managing his game and emotions around a golf course, and few times was that more evident than over these last four days, early in the Englishman’s 28th year as a pro.

Rose shot 62-65-68-70 and his 23-under 265 total surpassed the previous record held by Woods (1999) and George Burns (1987)—both reaching the mark when Torrey Pines was a pushover compared to the brute the South Course became ahead of the 2008 U.S. Open.

The seven-stroke margin of victory over three players is the largest since Woods won by eight in 2008, and Rose is the first player to win San Diego’s tour event by being the sole leader after every round since Tommy Bolt did it in 1955—13 years before the event moved to Torrey Pines.

Now the oldest player to win the tournament—in the last year that it’s being sponsored by Farmers Insurance—Rose carved up Torrey Pines the same way he did when he won here in 2019 with a 21-under total, while occupying the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. He led the field in greens in regulation with nearly 82 percent hit, was second in strokes gained/approach, gaining 7.25 on the field, and was 10th in SG/putting (3.53).

It was a masterful display of shotmaking and strategy, which brought him to his own comparisons to some of the greats.

Orlando Ramirez

“What a week from start to finish,” said Rose. “I just got really disciplined this week. Obviously, I was playing well, but I just thought the way I managed my game, the way I thought about things, the way I was patient at the right time, the way I was able to absorb a little bit of the odd mistake by holing the right two-putt at the right time.

“There was a lot of mental maturity from the strategic golf point of view out there, which I think you look at the best players in history—Jack, Tiger, I’m going to say Scottie Scheffler now as well. That’s the sort of thing they do week in and week out, and I feel like that’s something that I did really, really well this week.”

Of course, much is being made about Rose’s age, and the win moves him to No. 3 in the world and makes him the second-oldest (a few months behind Vijay Singh) to ever reach the top three. Not that Rose, who began his pro career at 17, thinks much about it.

“I take pride out of it—that I’m doing something that’s not easy to do,” he said. “But I don’t wake up in the morning believe that narrative, either.”

Sahith Theegala, who is 28 and finished nine shots behind the winner on Sunday, has gotten to know Rose more now that they play on the same TGL team, and he marvels at the lengths he has gone to take care of himself and not let his game slide.

“What he’s doing at 45 is unbelievable,” Theegala said. “Just to be able to gain the ball speed he has, to be able to keep the competitive fire that he has, the discipline while also being a great family man. … He kind of does it all. He’s very, very impressive.”

Theegala opined that Rose hasn’t received nearly the attention he should. “Somehow, I feel like he’s flown under the radar for 20-plus years,” he said. “No. 1 in the world, major champ, gold medalist, whatever. You name it, you feel like he’s done it. So to be playing potentially some of the best golf of his life now.

“I know he wants to win majors really bad. I wouldn’t be surprised if he snags one this year at all, especially after last year.”

Of course, if there is a smudge on Rose’s career, it’s that he’s won only a single major while finishing solo or joint second five times. He tied for second in the 2024 Open Championship, and there was the devastating loss just last April, when Rose did about all he could to win his first Masters, only to lose a playoff to Rory McIlroy.

Those are sources of tremendous motivation for him.

Orlando Ramirez

“I think that maybe I would say I’ve had some rounds last year—whether it be Sunday at Augusta or … Saturday of the Ryder Cup, [or] some of the golf this week, to be honest,” Rose said. “I think those days or those weeks or those rounds are definitely showing me that the gas is still in the tank. Obviously, accessing it is the job now or is the trick. … But at least knowing it’s there kind of builds a lot of confidence.”

This was the week that saw the return of Brooks Koepka to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf (he ultimately finished T-56) and the news that Patrick Reed was leaving the Saudi-backed circuit with plans to regain his card for next year’s tour season.

In the early days of LIV’s formation in 2022, Rose was among the players approached about joining the league—with a sizeable signing bonus on the table, no doubt. But he turned them down, as he said on Sunday, because “I kind of always felt like my childhood self wouldn’t feel very good about making that decision and kind of giving up” on the dreams of winning majors and meaningful tour titles. Safe to say, he has no regrets.

“I would say, sniffing and knocking on the door of a couple majors since those decisions were made and those [other] moments … it did validate the decision,” Rose said. “The way things are in the world of golf right now, I feel like it’s good to see people wanting to kind of play where it motivates them to be their best.”

It was an innocuous answer to a question about putting. Yet five words Justin Rose said on Sunday have stuck with me for what they say about the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

The 45-year-old Rose was brilliant on the greens all week at Bethpage, leading all 24 players in strokes gained/putting, and my colleague Luke Kerr-Dineen asked him why. Rose shrugged and said he couldn’t explain it.

“I wish I knew,” he said, with a celebratory beer resting next to his microphone. “I wish I could be a bit more selfish and know that 25 weeks of the year. But do you know what I feel like the power of this [pointing at his teammates], the power of the group, who knows what it is, that ability to lock in, the ability to just want it that little bit more.”

Then he paused.

RELATED: Europe’s Captain Everything reaches legend status, solidifies his place in history

“But the answer to your question is I don’t know, other than the badge and the boys, honestly. That’s all that matters, honestly, the badge and the boys.”

Rory McIlroy, draped in a European flag and sitting in front of Rose, nodded and said, away from his mic, “The badge and the boys, I like that.”

Those five words from Rose echoed through the rest of a press conference that was full of laughs, some tears and players clinking their drinks. I thought back two years, to a Friday night in Rome when Rose rolled in a 10-foot putt on the final green to prevent the U.S. from winning a single match on the first day of the 2023 Ryder Cup. You may remember the putt. Do you remember the celebration?

Rose turned to his teammates, lining the edge of the green, and pointed at each of them.

“You, you, you!” he screamed, dedicating his half point to his 11 European teammates. He then beat his chest, slamming his right hand against the European team badge.

His message that day was the same as it was Sunday in New York.

The reason it resonated so strongly with me is because I saw it myself at Bethpage Black last week.

RELATED: Rory McIlroy endured hell at Bethpage—and came out the other side a deserving winner

It struck me for the first time on Monday. Keegan Bradley led his U.S. team through the tunnel to the first tee, without their clubs, to soak up a moment together. They listened to the national anthem performed incredibly by New York City firefighter Bryan Robinson, and heard the moving words of Chris Mascali, a fire lieutenant who lost his father on 9/11.

The only time you’ll hear the European anthem—”Ode To Joy”, before you ask—is at the opening ceremony. Ask the 12 players on Team Europe to name the anthem and I doubt the majority would know.

After watching Bradley and his team on the first tee that morning, I realized that the Americans were seeking to draw inspiration from the identity of their country. It may seem extremely obvious, but I think it’s prescient to what I would realize on Sunday night.

The U.S. team feels the need to represent their country while the European team seeks to draw inspiration only from those who have played before them. They don’t seem to be interested in playing for a country. They play for each other. They seem inwardly rather than outwardly motivated. As much as the Euros represent their continent, and wear their flag, they ultimately feel a responsibility to those who built Team Europe.

I believe this plays out on the course.

‘We are united by a culture and we are united by a generation of players that have come before us.’ Justin Rose

The U.S. players came out on Friday morning, each carrying an American flag, to the sound of “Born in the U.S.A.” and “Coming to America”. They led chants of “U-S-A” and waved their flags. The patriotism was clear. But was it productive?

When putts dropped for the Americans, players would look to the crowd and encourage them to cheer more. They would walk off the greens in tow with their partners.

When putts dropped for the Europeans, they turned to find their partner. There was pointing, there was hugging, there was laughing. They appear to have a bond that the U.S. team is searching for.

Jamie Squire

Every two years, everyone in golf attempts to quantify why the European team, underdogs on paper, seem to have success in this unique format of team golf. Rose, himself, was asked about it in Rome.

“We are united by a culture and we are united by a generation of players that have come before us.” he told us on the back of a five-point European victory. “This is our time. Luke has been very clear on that message, this is our time to shine, not because this is our stage, we are just taking care of it because of the amazing role models that we’ve had before us that have shown us how to do it.”

RELATED: A frenetic Sunday delivered more than seemed possible

There’s no reference to Europe or a shared sense of responsibility to represent a country or continent.

“There’s a really strong culture on the European Team. A good pairing on the European Team doesn’t mean playing with your best mate. You know, it means representing something bigger than yourself, and I feel like that’s, for me, what being a European Ryder Cup player is all about.”

Fast forward two years and Rose again sat in a winning Ryder Cup press conference, the fifth time he’s done that, and whilst the question was directly about his team’s motivation, his answer got there.

The badge. And the boys. In that order. Represent the team. Do your teammates proud. Don’t worry about anything else. That’s what is important. That’s how to be successful.

And with 11 wins in the last 15 Ryder Cups, it’s working.

Justin Rose got off to a blazing start at Portrush on Saturday. After bogeying the opening hole, Rose birdied five of the next six to claw his way back into contention for the second Open running.

Unfortunately, the wheels came flying off on the 8th hole when Rose’s tee shot found a particularly nasty patch of rough. Iron in hand, Rose swiped at his ball, which exploded off his clubface at a near 90-degree angle, flying into the gallery at head height. Watch it and wince.

That’s what we industry insiders call a stone-cold shank. Thankfully, the mis-hit flew straight into a TV tower instead of a forehead, but Rose was immediately concerned, pulling out of his follow-through and shouting “ohhh, oh my God!” as his shot narrowly avoided disaster.

Rose also avoided a catastrophe on his scorecard as well, limiting the damage to a bogey as he vies to become the first Englishman to win the Open since Nick Faldo in 1992. The 2013 U.S. Open champ will need to be throwing darts the rest of the way if he hopes to catch Scheffler, Fitzpatrick and co., but this is one shot he’ll be happy missed the mark.

UPDATE: Oops he’s done it again.

We’re midway through the 89th Masters, but it’s where the journey ended for some of the field. Forty-two players to be exact, with 53 advancing.

Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott and Billy Horschel all will be heading home, failing to qualify for the weekend. Nick Dunlap, who shot 90 in the first round, rebounded with 71 in Round 2. Yes, a 19-shot improvement. But he will not be around for the next two rounds either.
