Last week, Bryson DeChambeau spoke about using his profile in earnest during business meetings as the LIV Golf League attempts to raise investment, following the decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to withdraw funding after the 2026 season.

But as the league seeks between $250 million and #50 million to help keep it afloat, its other star—fellow two-time major winner Jon Rahm—has ruled out performing a similar role to DeChambeau during the pitching process.

“I am not, no,” Rahm said during a press conference in Spain on Tuesday at LIV Golf Andalucia when ask about meeting with potential investors. “I said [moments earlier] it in Spanish; I don’t know how to translate it to English; it would be more of a ‘stay-in-your-lane’ type situation as it goes to me.

“I know nothing about business. I’m never going to claim to know anything about business, and if I was in a business pitch, I would not know the first thing to say. My job is to play golf, and I’ll say it is hard enough as it is, especially this week [at the exacting Valderrama course].”

Rahm has three children and a fourth expected later this fall. While the 31-year-old would listen to any suggestions on how he could get involved, Rahm said there were time constraints.

He also has two remaining major championships outside of LIV Golf, as well as a minimum five DP World Tour events to compete in after reaching an agreement to continue playing on the circuit.

“If any player who knows what they’re doing is willing to do certain things like that, I think it can only help,” Rahm said. “To have insight from a player on a meeting like that can help, and I’m open for any suggestions possible. But I would also say I don’t have the free time that Bryson has to be flying around the country to attend meetings with three little ones and one on the way. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know if I could do it.”

LIV Golf is in the process of pitching to investors with the assistance of New York-based Ducera Partners.

It is believed the league is pitching a 10-event schedule to potential investors while trying to secure between $250 million and $350 million. A re-shaped LIV Golf would extend equity beyond just the team captains and will have an emphasis on team golf. More than 12 players provided introductions to potential investors, for both the league and its teams.

Jamie Squire

This came about after the Public Investment Fund confirmed it would not finance LIV beyond the 2026 season, following a reported spend of between $5 billion and $8 billion since the league launched in 2022.

Last week at LIV Golf Korea, DeChambeau was asked by reporters about the PIF’s withdrawal from LIV and his confidence in securing new investment.

“One door closes, another opens,” DeChambeau said. “I think that’s the way a lot of us are looking at it. I think we all have optimism that there is a business plan that makes sense for team golf.

“I’m very optimistic with the business plan of team golf compared to other models, in my opinion.”

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil had said previously that five-time league winner DeChambeau had been “a driven” partner.

“You want to talk about a business partner, we’re literally talking about the future of LIV Golf, I’m talking with him about how does he see, not just the golf, but the business? He’s smart, he’s driven, he’s committed, and he’s a heck of a partner.”

LIV Golf Andalucia, the ninth event of the season, starts Thursday at Valderrama, a former DP World Tour and World Golf Championships host course. It also held the 1997 Ryder Cup.

The league will then take a seven-week break given its Louisiana event, scheduled for June, has been postponed until a potential fall date.

For the second year in a row, Jon Rahm got a pinky on the Wanamaker Trophy, which is closer than a lot of players ever get to winning the PGA Championship. For the second year in a row, he climbed into a share of the lead during the final round. But for the second year in a row, getting a firm grip on golf’s largest trophy once again eluded the talented Spaniard.

Last year at Quail Hollow, it was a stunning collapse that scuttled his bid. On Sunday at Aronimink Golf Club, Rahm just couldn’t get the ball in the hole fast enough. After starting his final round with two birdies, Rahm converted only two more the rest of the round, cancelled by a pair of bogeys. His closing 68 left him at six-under 274, tied with Alex Smalley for second place, three shots behind winner Aaron Rai.

The finish was both decidedly heartening and dyspeptic for the two-time major winner who posted his 16th top-10 finish in a major championship and ninth in the top five. He played well enough to forge a tie atop the leaderboard, but not well enough to keep it.

“I played really good golf. That’s the only way to look at it. Just wish I’d have done better with the speed of the greens,” said Rahm, 31, who hit 16 greens on Sunday but needed 33 putts, ranking in the bottom third in that category. “Just couldn’t seem to get it to the hole, and that’s the reason why I didn’t hole any more putts. Even so, what Aaron did today, catching him could have been very difficult. I don’t know if it could happen, but I would have liked a better chance playing the last two holes. I feel like I was still close on 16 until he made that long putt [at 17].”

Rahm, who entered the week ranked 20th in the world, assembled a dream start when he converted birdie putts of seven and 11 feet at the first two holes. But he bogeyed three from the middle of the fairway, finding a bunker from just 124 yards out, and another bogey at the seventh after a poor drive left him adrift in a large pack of contenders. His only birdies came on the par-5 holes, Nos. 9 and 16.

Emilee Chinn

One of the marquee names in the LIV Golf League since he joined the upstart circuit in late 2023, Rahm could certainly look upon his week as one of progress. Which he was inclined to do.

“As far as I’m concerned, to be in the mix again and hit it as good as I did and perform as well as I did this weekend, it’s been a great week,” he said after his fourth top-10 major finish as a LIV member. “Four rounds under par, even par, can’t really ask too much more of myself.”

Well, actually, he could. Rahm led the field in driving distance with a monster 350-yard average and was fourth in strokes gained/tee to green at plus-2.383. This was a winnable major for him, never mind how well Aaron Rai played. Rahm gave himself plenty of scoring chances, and not just on Sunday. He needed 31 putts or more the final three rounds after leading the field with only 26 on Thursday.

This autopsy seemed easier to digest than the one in Charlotte. But not by much. Last year he was in shock. This year, he was befuddled.

“I still need to give myself some time to think about what I could have done better this week,” Rahm said. “Right now I’m really still fresh on just today, but I did miss two putts from about four feet yesterday. So that’s two shots right there. It’s easy to focus on today because I’m sure I can find three shots that in the length of the week could have been better. I still need to assess the entire week to be able to pick and choose what I need to change or what I need to improve on.

“The margin,” he added, “even though it’s three shots, it can be so small, honestly. I feel like I’m playing really good golf and definitely played good enough this week to give myself a chance to win. So keep doing what I’ve been doing well.”

Nope, just do it a little bit better.

There are two stories you can tell about Jon Rahm’s jump to LIV Golf in 2024. The first is that the framework agreement between LIV and the PGA Tour opened up an opportunity for him to make an obscene amount of money with the high likelihood that the two tours would officially merge before too long, and that if the tour would deal with LIV, why couldn’t he? The second story contains the first story but adds a crucial detail: that Rahm thought he was important enough to force that merger with his defection. As in, “If I go, the tour can’t hold out any longer.”

In remarks made to the BBC at the time, Rahm seemed to give fuel to the second version.

“I could be the start of a tipping point in that sense,” Rahm said. “I understood the weight that [my] decision could have and the impact it could have. I understood that perfectly and that’s why it wasn’t an easy decision. … Luckily, in my career, especially last year, I accomplished a lot and I got to be one of the bigger names in golf. There are few active players that could have had a bigger impact than myself in that sense. Not to be patting myself on the back too much, but I understood the position I was in.”

Two years later, of course, things look very different—the PIF is pulling its investment in LIV at year’s end, and the future of the league is in serious jeopardy. Players like Rahm, whose contracts run past 2026, find themselves in limbo as LIV scrambles to find a lifeline via new investors. On Tuesday at the PGA Championship, he first distanced himself from the notion that he believed he’d be a catalyst for the merger.

“I was never like thinking that I was going to be any sort of weight that would tip the scales to make things come together,” he said. “That was never an argument in my mind. When asked if that was the case for people to come together, that would be great. I never made a decision based on that.”

As to whether he looks back with any regret or would change his decision if he had known how the last two years would play out, he was more circumspect.

“Now, I would also say I’ve made a lot of decisions in my life, and I’ve never gone back thinking, ‘Oh, had I known this again, I would do X and Y different,’” he explained. “I could do that about 15 different golf shots on the golf course every single day. If I lived my life like that as a golfer, I would be a very pessimistic person … just to speculate on what could have done, what could have been different doesn’t really make much sense.”

“We all go back,” he added. “We all think what could have been and what couldn’t have been. It’s inevitable … if the terms change afterward, like it’s happened with LIV that things changed a little bit, it’s an afterthought, not a problem from the choice.”

Later in the press conference, a reporter asked him to clarify what he had learned from the last two years.

“That is for me to know,” Rahm said with a smile. “And that’s about that.”

Rahm, 31, comes into this year’s PGA Championship on the strength of LIV Golf wins in Hong Kong and Mexico City, and he’s looking to improve on his performance at last year’s PGA at Quail Hollow, when he briefly held a share of the lead on the back nine Sunday before fading to a T-8 finish. He has three major top-10s since moving to LIV and finished T-38 at this year’s Masters. He’s the highest-ranked LIV player in the Official World Golf Ranking at No. 20. It was clear from his remarks that he’s confident in his form.

“I feel like I’m playing better than the ranking I have right now,” he said. “I’m not going to get into the details of what number I would be [in the OWGR] because I don’t want to insult any player who doesn’t play fantastic golf, but I feel like higher than I am right now, that would be fair.”

Jon Rahm said Tuesday that he doesn’t “see many ways out” of his LIV Golf contract as he spoke openly for the first time about what his options will be now that the league has announced it’s no longer funded by Saudi Arabia’s PIF and is looking for investors for it to continue.

The two-time major champion was asked in Washington, D.C., ahead of LIV Golf’s event at Trump National, if he was able to get out of his contract with the league if he feels like it’s not suitable for him beyond this year.

“I have no idea, I couldn’t tell you,” he said. “I have very few talents in my life, and reading a contract or business are not two of them.

“As of right now, I have several years on my contract left, and I’m pretty sure they did a pretty good job when they drafted that. So I don’t see many ways out, and as of right now, I’m not really thinking about it since we still have a season to play and majors to compete for. So it’s not something I want to think about just yet.”

He may not be thinking about it yet, but it’s something Rahm is likely going to have to deal with soon. He’s willing to see what CEO Scott O’Neil comes up with first.

“I don’t think he would ask anybody to buy into anything without giving us a business plan first,” Rahm said. “Until we have that, I don’t think we can really answer the rest, right? It would just be speculation at that point.”

Rahm said that the league has worked with team captains, of which he is for Legion XIII, about their respective ideas. He’s given his opinion but realises it’s impossible to make everyone happy in a situation like this where there are 57 players and 13 teams.

For now, he’s trying to focus on playing this week in the nation’s capital. He leads the season’s individual standings, has won twice—including two weeks ago in Mexico City—and hasn’t finished worse than fifth place in six events.

But it’s not easy to focus on the golf course when there are so many distractions off of it. On Tuesday, he squashed one distraction by announcing that he and the DP World Tour have ended their dispute and he’s now eligible to play on Europe’s Ryder Cup team next year. The LIV Golf intrusions, however, do not appear to be going away soon.

“It’s definitely extra noise, there’s no denying it,” he said. “But I think we deal with it as athletes honestly. I think it’s part of the job a lot of times, and sometimes that extra noise is internal for something that may be happening family-wise that’s not public, which is much worse than this.

“We practice enough so once you get in competition mode, it doesn’t matter. It might be a worry before or after, but it shouldn’t be once you get to that first tee. We’ve said a few times, when it’s so uncertain and so out of our control, there’s really nothing to think about.”

A long-running standoff between the DP World Tour and Jon Rahm has finally been resolved, with both sides confirming an agreement that secures the Spaniard’s playing status for the remainder of the 2026 season on the DP World Tour.

The DP World Tour confirmed the news in a statement released Tuesday, saying: “The DP World Tour and Jon Rahm have come to an agreement on conditional releases to play in conflicting tournaments on LIV Golf during the remainder of its 2026 season. This involves payment of all outstanding fines accrued from 2024 to date, along with participation in agreed DP World Tour tournaments (outside the majors) in the remainder of the 2026 season.”

The agreement ends the uncertainty that had cast doubt over Rahm’s eligibility ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup. Speaking ahead of LIV Golf Virginia, Rahm revealed that both sides made concessions to reach a compromise, bringing clarity to his status after previously withdrawing an appeal against sanctions without settling the dispute.

Rahm had been the only one among nine European LIV players to reject earlier conditions, objecting to an increased requirement of six non-major DP World Tour appearances instead of the standard four. His position softened in recent weeks, culminating in a deal that ensures compliance with Tour regulations while allowing him to continue competing on LIV.

The 2023 Masters champion has impressed in LIV Golf in 2026, recording two victories and three runner-up finishes, lifting him to No. 21 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The most turbulent week in LIV Golf’s short history ended with far less drama when Jon Rahm won the league’s Mexico City event in a canter.

Rahm’s six-shot victory at Chapultepec Golf Club ended a week in which reports surfaced that LIV’s financiers, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, were on the verge of withdrawing their financial backing after the 2026 season.

Those reports came after the Public Investment Fund released a new investment strategy.

“The 2026-30 strategy marks a natural evolution as PIF moves from a period of rapid growth and acceleration to a new phase of sustained value creation, with a strengthened focus on maximising impact, raising the efficiency of investments, and applying the highest standards of governance, transparency and institutional excellence,” the PIF said in a release.

There was speculation about the future of the remaining eight events of LIV’s season before league sources told Golf Digest on Wednesday that funding and operations would continue for 2026.

Earlier in the week, during an interview with British broadcaster TNT, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil was asked about future funding. One of his answers included the line, “The reality is you’re funded through the season and then you work like crazy to create a business and a business plan to keep us going.”

Before the final round, LIV posted to social media that it would return to Mexico City and that tickets would be on sale soon.

The overall future of the league did not seem to affect competitive play as Rahm strode easily to his second win of the season, which comes in addition to three runner-up finishes. Rahm, a former Masters and U.S. Open champion, carded a bogey-free final-round seven-under 64 to finish at 21 under. Rahm’s fellow Spaniard David Puig was 15 under, while their countryman, Josele Ballester, was third at 14 under.

Rahm’s 64 was set up by an astonishing, 390-yard drive on the short par-4 third that nestled to tap-in distance for eagle. He never looked back.

“Obviously a massive bonus to hit a drive to tap-in in any conditions anywhere ever,” Rahm said. “That was huge and kind of freed me up a little bit to play the next few holes still aggressive because Puig was five or six under through six, seven holes.”

Rahm said he was in disbelief given he opened last week’s Masters with a 78 and battled just to make the cut at Augusta National.

“If you would have told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’d be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not have believed you because of how bad I played,” Rahm said. “Hell of an effort, and just what a Sunday.”

The former World No.1 said he was battling a swing issue that clicked before the final round at the Masters.

“Yeah [my caddie] and I nearly got in a heated argument on Saturday on the putting green at Augusta when he was trying to explain something and I wasn’t fully understanding,” Rahm said. “Once it clicked what he was trying to say and what I needed to work on that range session Saturday afternoon, it was so much better. Sunday at Augusta I played much better golf, and it’s only gotten a little bit easier since then.

“It’s not always the easiest to have a swing thought while playing, but this one obviously seemed to work out.”

Given LIV Golf now receives Official World Golf Ranking points, World No. 31 Rahm was projected to ascend back into the top 20.

Runner up put Puig, who separately won the DP World Tour’s Australian PGA Championship in December, is within striking distance of a U.S. Open exemption. The USGA will award the top two points earners (not already exempt) spots in the US Open—one from LIV’s final 2025 standings and the other to a player from top three of the 2026 individual standings through May 18.

Puig has one more start—LIV Golf Virginia—to wrap it up.

“With that second place, hopefully I’m a little closer to the top 60 [on the OWGR], as well, in case that exemption doesn’t come through,” Puig said. “But I think about all the time. Playing majors is just amazing.”

While the final round offered a runaway victory for Rahm, there was some drama in the form of two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau withdrawing prior to the final round due to a wrist injury.

“I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round,” DeChambeau said via social media. “Not how I wanted this week to go.

“I’m going to take a few days to get evaluated and hope to be ready for LIV Golf Virginia.”

After shooting a two-under 70 on Friday to make the cut on the number following an opening-round 78, former Masters winner Jon Rahm was asked if LIV prepares him to play in this tournament.

“Same as any other golf tournament in the world, yeah,” the 2023 champ said.

He may have changed his opinion on that matter two days later, as the Spaniard finished with a one-over total following rounds of 73 and 68 on the weekend at Augusta National. His T-38 finish marks his second worst in this golf tournament in 10 tries, the worst being his T-45 the year after his victory. Both of those results have come post-LIV signing in February of 2024.

Rahm, who hit less than 60 percent of his greens this week, did not specifically point to the LIV schedule, or any of its venues, as the reason for his down week. But he did point to the fact he seemed underprepared for the firm and fast conditions.

“Definitely some things I’m going change going forward,” Rahm said. “Preparation-wise and what to do. But it’s hard to say how much I learned because I don’t think we ever seen a Masters this firm and I don’t know how long it’s going to be until we do again. Both off the tee and on the greens.”

The two-time major champion then got one more thing off his chest.

“Have you ever seen looking down the property how yellow the patron areas and how brown and purple parts of the greens and fairways are?” he said. “It will be a long time until we see it like this. Definitely have some things in mind for future editions where it gets to this level.”

What things, Rahm did not expand on. All he added was that he learned exactly what not to do when Augusta plays the way it did this week.

Jon Rahm’s Ryder Cup status is very much up in the air. Just not to Rahm.

Earlier this year eight LIV Golf members reached a deal with the DP World Tour to allow the members of the Saudi-backed circuit to play on both leagues. However, Rahm’s name was absent from that group, as he declined to meet the conditions of the deal, which stipulated paying fines and participating in six DP World Tour events.

“I don’t know what game they’re [DP World Tour] trying to play right now,” Rahm said in February at the deal, “but it just seems like in a way … they’re using our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer. It’s just in a way they’re extorting players like myself, and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game. So I don’t like the situation and I’m not going to agree to that.”

Last month, Rahm dropped his appeal, seemingly putting his Ryder Cup eligibility for 2027 in doubt as European players must be members in good standing with the DP World Tour.

But, speaking to the media Tuesday at Augusta National, Rahm said he believes he will still be on the team.

“We keep talking about the DP World Tour and trying to figure out a solution that works best,” Rahm said. “I didn’t think that going the legal route and going to court was good for anybody. So I have faith in us and the DP World Tour we’re going to find a good solution for both of us.”

Rahm was asked if he was confident he’ll be at Adare Manor in Ireland next fall for the biennial competition, to which he replied “Yes.” Later, after another follow-up on the subject, Rahm said he didn’t think it was appropriate speaking about the subject during Masters week, yet expressed he has held up his side of the bargain.

“I think I already have,” Rahm said, about the idea of a compromise. “We’ve already told them many times. I just don’t know, so I think this is not the week to be talking about this, this being the first major of the year and how important this is for the game of golf in general and for all of us.

“We keep talking to them, and we keep trying to negotiate. I have given in quite a bit in a few things, which I think I made — I talked about on my last press conference. We’re going to work it out. It’s going to work out. As of now, the DP World Tour is doing what they need to do and following the channels they need to follow, but I’m confident this will be sorted out before I tee it up in September.”

Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are the only LIV Golf members who have competed for the European team during professional golf’s schism. Rahm is currently atop LIV’s individual standings with a win and three seconds in first starts this year, and enters the week 30th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Two-time major champion and current LIV Golf player Jon Rahm has withdrawn his appeal against outstanding sanctions levied against him by the DP World Tour, but he remains on an island when it comes to his future status on the circuit.

Golf.com first reported on Friday Rahm’s move to drop the appeal on March 10 that he originally filed back in 2024, while the story also said Rahm has no intention of paying his outstanding fines. Golf Digest has previously reported those penalties to be less than $3 million.

In February, eight LIV Golf players, but not Rahm, reached a deal with the DP World Tour allowing them to compete freely on both circuits. Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and others were permitted to play in DP World Tour events while appealing fines accumulated for defecting to the Saudi-backed circuit. That included participating in last year’s Ryder Cup, at which Rahm also played in Europe’s win.

Then the DPT issued conditional releases to Hatton—along with Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig and Elvis Smylie—to play in future LIV Golf events that conflict with DP World Tour events under three stipulations: That they pay all outstanding fines, participate in a set number of DP World Tour events (along with associated media activity and promotion) and withdraw all pending appeals.

Rahm balked at those requirements—particularly the minimum number of DPT starts needed—and was highly critical of the DPT while speaking ahead of LIV’s event in Hong Kong, which he ultimately won.

“I don’t know what game they’re [DP World Tour] trying to play right now,” he said, “but it just seems like in a way … they’re using our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer. It’s just in a way they’re extorting players like myself, and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game. So I don’t like the situation and I’m not going to agree to that.”

“They’re asking me to play a minimum of six events, and they dictate where two of those have to be, amongst other things that I don’t agree with,” Rahm said. “I did tell them, funny enough, lower that to four events, like the minimum says, and I’ll sign tonight. They haven’t agreed to that. I just refuse to play six events. I don’t want to, and that’s not what the rules say.”

With Rahm’s appeal over, he will be expected to pay the fines or face losing membership on the DPT, and, of large consequence, not be eligible for the 2027 Ryder Cup that is set to be played at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Jon Rahm’s golf year is over. That in itself is a bit odd as he acknowledged on Sunday after finishing T-9 at the Spanish Open.

“I’ve never had three months off, but I’m looking forward to it,” Rahm told reporters at the DP World Tour event. “Other athletes have it, and we’ll see. I’m lucky to be able to go home now, have a preseason, be a father, be with my family, and well, if I see that it’s too much, then maybe I won’t do it next year, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Rahm’s long layoff is due to LIV’s season-opening event of 2026 not being until February in Riyadh. So he’ll have plenty of time to be with his family—as well as to ponder the weirdest golf year of his life.

The 30-year-old played plenty of good golf and made plenty of money during 2025, but there were no great weeks. For the first time since turning pro in 2016, Rahm failed to hoist an individual trophy.

Yes, he and his European teammates recently hoisted the Ryder Cup. And Rahm was a big reason for that, earning three points. But his fantastic play at Bethpage Black even made his winless drought seem more bizarre.

Oh, yeah, his Legion XIII squad won LIV’s team championship as well. But, somehow, Rahm never stood atop a LIV podium by himself this year.

It wasn’t all bad, though, because even stranger is how Rahm was able to finish No. 1 in the LIV individual standings for the entire year. Despite the fact he won zero times compared to Joaquin Niemann’s five victories.

How does that happen? Well, again, Rahm played plenty of good golf throughout the year. In 13 individual LIV starts, a T-11 in Dallas was his worst finish. He earned an $18 million bonus for finishing first in the standings and he pulled in $34.25 million overall in LIV money. In addition to his contract money. Not too shabby.

Rahm also wasn’t too shabby at the majors with a pair of top 10s in majors. But, again, we’ve just come to expect more from the two-time major champ with over 20 pro wins before turning 30.

For the year, Rahm had 15 top-10 finishes and four runner-ups, a staggering amount of good results without a win. For reference—and it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison—Tommy Fleetwood had nine top 10s on the PGA Tour without a win in 2022-2023. And Scottie Scheffler had 17 this year, but he also won six times.

In any event, if the Rahm golf fans saw at the Ryder Cup shows up next year, he’ll certainly hoist more trophies. Or even the Rahm we saw just about everywhere else in 2025 considering he’s No. 3 in Data Golf’s ranking behind only Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. But for now, Rahm remains in an odd state of limbo. And now he has a lot of time to think about it.
