Rory McIlroy had to stop his Tuesday practice round at the PGA Championship after three holes due to a foot issue.

At last week’s Truist Championship, McIlroy, 37, told reporters he was dealing with a blister on the pinky toe of his right foot. “But it’s underneath my nail,” McIlroy said. “So I can’t really get to it. So it’s a little sore, but I’ll be all right.” He said he didn’t have any long-term concerns with the toe.

However, McIlroy was seen limping on the third hole at Aronimink, at one point taking off his shoe. He repeated the move on the fourth tee before halting his practice and deciding to go in. McIlroy was ultimately taken off the course on a golf cart, although appeared to be in good spirits.

McIlroy is a two-time PGA champion, and successfully defended his Masters title last month. He finished T-19 at Quail Hollow last week.

McIlroy has an early tee time on Thursday, going off with Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm at 8:40 a.m.

Collin Morikawa was such a popular play among sharp bettors ahead of this week’s Players Championship that his odds were nearly slashed in half—Morikawa opened at 33-1 and closed at 16-1—ahead of his Thursday morning tee time at TPC Sawgrass.

Morikawa lasted all of one hole.

The two-time major champion, who had won, tied for seventh and finished solo fifth in his previous three PGA Tour starts, seemed to pick up right where he left off at the par-4 10th, his first hole of the day. After hitting the fairway, he stuck his approach to 11 feet, just missing the birdie putt and settling for an opening par.

The 17-inch par putt wound up being his final stroke of the week. At the 11th tee, Morikawa took an aggressive practice swing with his driver and immediately grabbed the lower right portion of his back, walking to the back of the tee box in pain:

A tough break for Collin Morikawa.pic.twitter.com/JJweftUjTh

“Oh man,” Morikawa could be heard saying on the PGA Tour Live broadcast. After some light stretches, he made the decision to call it.

Looks like that could be the end of the tournament for Collin Morikawa after tweaking his back. pic.twitter.com/NsEtvGcKBh

After returning to the clubhouse, Morikawa confirmed that he felt fine during his warmup, and that it was the practice swing that did him in.

“Like nothing’s been any signs of back problems,” he said. “And teed it up on 11, and took one practice swing, and I just knew it was gone. Like I just had the feeling before when it’s happened. And I just, I can’t swing through it. Trust me, I would play if I could. It’s just the worst thing in the world.”

Let’s get the cringe-inducing details out of the way first. Scottie Scheffler sliced the palm of his right hand on Christmas Day using a wine glass to cut dough into pieces of ravioli. Holding the glass upside down, he applied supplied sufficient force to break the base, and his hand crashed down onto the broken stem, delivering a puncture wound just below his middle finger—which he may or may not have employed in the immediate aftermath.

Regretfully, Scheffler did not disclose the contents of the ravioli. Spinach? Cheese? Sausage? That mystery remains.

On Tuesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the World No. 1 golfer finally described the events that led to the freak injury, which required surgery and forced him to miss two intended starts in the first month of the PGA Tour season. But he is back now for the year’s second signature event, the $20 million AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and considering that five of his seven wins last year came in signature events—the other were the Masters and the Tour Championship—the reigning Player of the Year and FedEx Cup champion is raring to go.

Having to sit around at home has something to do with his eagerness for competition, too.

But such was his lot after improvising with an instrument ill-suited for the intended purpose. Woodrow Wilson, forgive us.

“So when you make raviolis, we wanted to make them from scratch, so you’ve got to roll the dough and you’ve got to cut the dough, but we were at a rental house so we didn’t have like the right tools and the only thing there was a wine glass that we found,” Scheffler said, beginning to spin out the yarn of his travails. “I had my hand on top of it and it broke, which side note, I’ve heard nothing but horror stories since this happened about wine glasses, so be careful. Even if you’re like me and you don’t drink wine, you’ve got to be real careful with wine glasses.

We’ll keep that in mind. Anyway, he continued:

“Yeah, it broke and the stem kind of got me in the hand. … You know, it could have been a lot worse. I actually talked to somebody who did the exact same thing and the stem went straight through their hand. It’s one of those deals where immediately after it happened, I was mad at myself because I was like ‘Gosh, that’s so stupid,’ but you just don’t think about it when you’re in the moment. Yeah, definitely been like a little more careful doing stuff at home.”

Can you show us the scar?

“No.”

Chicks dig scars, they say.

“No. I’ve got a little piece of tape on it so you can’t see it anyways,” he said, holding up his hand to display a barely visible bandage. “Sorry. Right there, it’s right there. It’s, what do you call it, it’s nude.”

He was rolling. And not dough. Though after last year’s successes, he’s been rolling in it—about $63 million and change in prize money and bonuses.

At least Scheffler, 26, tried to use his recuperating period wisely. He couldn’t hit balls or work out, so the Texan watched plenty of tournament replays of himself. You would, too, if you won eight times, including the Olympic gold medal. He had 10 wins overall if you throw in the Hero World Challenge and (stretching things a bit) the exhibition match in which he and Rory McIlroy beat LIV Golf League members Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

“Eleven with the Presidents Cup,” he chimed in.

Fine. But who’s counting?

Scheffler makes a habit of studying his play, whether he wins or not. But especially when he wins. He owns 13 tour titles, including two Masters titles and consecutive wins in The Players, the first man ever to win the tour’s flagship event back-to-back.

“I usually like to just check and see how things look. I kind of have a good understanding of where the swing is and where I want it and how it looks when I’m swinging really well,” he said. “Sometimes it’s good to go back and look at certain things on the TV, because you get good angles on TV, you get to see different stuff. That’s something that’s pretty common that I do.”

Tellingly, however, the educational exercise is more than assessing his golf swing. And more than about how he finished off victories, like comeback wins at The Travelers Championship and the Players. He’s searching deeper into himself, certainly a lot deeper than a broken wine glass can penetrate.

“I try to focus as much as I can on the internal stuff, so that’s why I went back and I watched a lot of the tournaments. I wasn’t watching late on Sunday, I was watching more the beginning of the week and seeing how I got into the flow of the tournament.

“I looked at a tournament like Travelers last year was a good example of a tournament where I didn’t necessarily play great the whole tournament, and late in the round on Saturday I was almost out of the tournament,” Scheffler added. “I had birdied the last four holes on Saturday to get myself into the golf tournament, then had a good day Sunday and had to win in a playoff. I think if it was my rookie year and I had a day on Saturday in which I struggled, I may have gotten more upset than I did, but I did a really great job of staying patient. I didn’t force things.

“Then you look at a tournament like THE PLAYERS, a similar thing. Late on Saturday I birdied the last three holes when I was almost out of the tournament and I birdied 16, 17, 18 to give myself a fighting chance going into Sunday. It’s more … what I looked at, it’s more about my attitude and not giving up and staying patient and doing my best to grind it out because golf tournaments are played over 72 holes and I think a lot of times we get trapped in just what happens on Sunday. Golf tournaments are long, they’re a grind.”

Scheffler was profoundly unhappy having to sit at home these last few weeks, missing the season opener, The Sentry, and one of his favourite tournaments, The American Express. He pushed himself hard in practice last week at home in chilly Dallas to ensure that his hand had healed sufficiently. He might be rusty, but he said he has come to the Monterey Peninsula ready to compete—and to win.

The bonus this week, we’re relieved to point out: It’s a no-cut tournament.

Scottie Scheffler answered questions from the media for the first time since announcing he needed surgery to repair his injured right hand involving an accident around the end of December. During a media day for the Arnold Palmer Invitational as the defending champion, Scheffler joined remotely and said his recovery is going well.

“Everything went well with the surgery,” Scheffler told the assembled media via video conference. “Body feels pretty good, still making decisions on schedule going forward.”

Scheffler said he’s unsure whether he’ll commit to next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which would be the second signature event he would miss if he’s unable to participate. The field will be announced on Friday.

“We should know in the next few days to a week whether I’ll play next week. But everything’s on schedule so we’ll see.”

When asked how long ago he was able to get back to hitting full shots, he declined to discuss specifics about his recovery, though he said he has returned to the gym. And when asked how he injured his hand, he mentioned “making homemade ravioli.” In a statement released on Dec. 27 by Scheffler’s manager Blake Smith, it stated: “On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” while also saying small fragments of glass remained in Scheffler’s palm, which required surgery.

Scheffler also joked that it took some adjusting to not using his right hand for normal stuff during his recovery from surgery such as brushing his teeth and changing diapers.

The world’s top-ranked golfer is coming off one of the best seasons in pro history with seven official PGA Tour victories, plus victories at December’s Hero World Challenge and a gold medal at the Olympics. He also became the first golfer since Tiger Woods to be named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year for the third straight season. Scheffler also paired with Rory McIlroy in December to win the Crypto.com Showdown at Shadow Creek.

Scottie Scheffler’s 2025 PGA Tour debut will have to wait at least another couple weeks.

The World No. 1 announced on Monday that he has withdrawn from the American Express next week. Scheffler had previously pulled out of the PGA Tour’s season opener at Kapalua due to a hand injury suffered on Christmas Day.

“After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week’s American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal,” Scheffler said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I am still hopeful to begin my 2025 Season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.”

On Dec. 27, Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, issued a statement saying, “On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass.”

He added that, “Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery,” and that Scheffler has been told he “should be back to 100% in three to four weeks.”

The AT&T Pebble Beach is Jan. 30-Feb. 2. Following the Sentry, it is the PGA Tour’s second signature event of the season.

Scheffler is coming off a historic season in which he won seven official PGA Tour events. He also won a Gold Medal at the Olympics and Tiger Woods’ event, the Hero World Challenge.

In December, Scheffler joined Woods by becoming the only other golfer to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award for a third consecutive year.

Hovland posted an x-ray to his Instagram over the weekend that looked to be a broken pinky toe. “Bed frame 1 – 0 me,” Hovland wrote under the photo.

The Ryder Cup star is supposed to play in the PGA Tour’s season-opening Sentry event in Maui this week, and as of writing is still listed in the field. According to Eurosport, Hovland is hoping that painkillers and tape will be enough to get him through the competition, although Kapalua’s Plantation course is one of the harder walks on the tour thanks to its mountainous topography.

Hovland, 27, captured the FedEx Cup in 2023, but is coming off a somewhat rocky campaign with just two top-10 finishes in 16 starts following a series of swing changes. The Norwegian is still ranked inside the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking and earned an invite to Maui thanks to finishing 12th in the FedEx Cup, a standing helped by a third-place finish at the PGA Championship and T-2 at the playoff-opening event in Memphis.

Hovland’s injury comes on the heels of Scottie Scheffler’s hand injury suffered on Christmas, which will sideline the three-time Player of the Year for at least a month.

Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Tour brethren could hardly stop him in 2024, but the start of his 2025 campaign is going to be delayed by an off-the-course accident that involved preparing Christmas dinner.

The PGA Tour announced on Friday that Scheffler, the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year who won seven events in the season, has had to withdraw from next week’s season-opening The Sentry in Maui. According to a statement by Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, the World No. 1 suffered a puncture wound to his right hand, and small pieces of glass in his palm needed to be removed with surgery.

Smith relayed that Scheffler, 28, has been told it will take three to four weeks for the hand to heal, with Scheffler’s next start scheduled for The American Express in the California desert that will be played Jan. 16-19.

The injury is a tough break for Scheffler, who by missing the event at Kapalua is out of a chance to compete in the season’s first signature event, with the field of 2024 winners and the top 50 finishers in the FedEx Cup standings vying for a total purse of $20 million and first prize of $3.6 million. Scheffler has made only three starts in The Sentry, with top-7 finishes in the past two years.

Scheffler would have entered Kapalua with wins in his last two starts—the season-ending Tour Championship and unofficial Hero World Challenge in early December.

The full field of The Sentry was finalized on Friday evening. With Scheffler out, the top-ranked player is World No. 2 Xander Schauffele, winner of the PGA Championship and Open Championship last year. No. 3 Rory McIlroy will again skip The Sentry, with his only start in the event having come in 2019.

Throughout his career Tiger Woods has been reticent about his numerous injuries and physical challenges, so it comes as no great surprise that the 15-time major winner never let on that his chronically troubled back grew increasingly dysfunctional as he attempted to compete in a handful of events in 2024.

What his prospects are for playing in PGA Tour events or major championship in 2025 remains unclear, but Woods knows that his recovery from micro decompression surgery of the lumbar spine on Sept. 13, his sixth back operation since 2004, hasn’t progressed enough to compete in this week’s Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas.

“I’m not tournament sharp yet. I’m still not there,” Woods, host of the $5 million limited-field event, said Tuesday during a press conference at Albany. “These are 20 of the best players in the world, and I’m not sharp enough to compete against them at this level. So when I’m ready to compete and play at this level, then I will.”

Woods, who turns 49 later this month, has played in his exhibition event just twice since 2019, when he finished fourth. Last year, he was 18th in his first tournament after ankle fusion surgery in April. He has won the event five times since its inception in 2000.

Given that he only played five events in 2024—his expressed goal for the year—it has to be disconcerting that his back did not hold up. Woods appeared in the four majors, missing the cut in three and finishing 60th at the Masters, last among players who advanced to the weekend. He also attempted to play in the Genesis Invitational, a signature event he hosts at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, but he had to withdraw with an illness.

The flare-up in his back certainly explains partly his poor play in the year’s final three majors in which he collectively shot 28 over par.

“As the year went on, it just kept progressively getting worse to the point where it just wasn’t getting better either from treatments or laying around resting or even activations,” he said. “Nothing felt good, and the MRI showed that.”

It was thought that if Woods was going to encounter any physical impediments to competing, it would be his right leg, which was badly mangled in a 2021 auto accident and for which he has undergone multiple surgeries.

“I didn’t think my back was going to go like it did this year. It was quite painful throughout the end of the year and, hence, I had another procedure done to it to alleviate the pain I had going down my leg,” Woods, winner of a record-tying 82 tour events, said. “So whether my commitment going forward is once a month, yeah, I could say that all over again, but I truly don’t know. I’m just trying to rehab and still get stronger and better and feel better, really give myself the best chance I can going into next year.

“This year was kind of … had to toss it away, and I wasn’t as sharp as I needed to be and I didn’t play as much as I needed to going into the major championships, and I didn’t play well at them. Hopefully next year will be better, I’ll be physically stronger and better. I know the procedure helped and hopefully that I can then build upon that.”

Woods’ first opportunity to play on the PGA Tour would come in late January at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a signature event for which he is now eligible after the tour’s policy board (on which he now serves) voted in June to grant him an exemption into all eight signature events for his “exceptional lifetime achievement.” The Genesis Invitational follows two weeks later, Feb.13-16.

It is conceivable that Woods might attempt to test his back in two weeks at the PNC Championship in Orlando, where he can ride in a cart while playing alongside his son Charlie in the 36-hole two-person scramble competition.

He was noncommittal on estimating when he can return, having learned long ago that every rehab stint is different, even when he knows what to expect.

“I really don’t,” Woods said, responding to a question about when he might be fit enough for competitive golf. “I’m just progressively trying to test it, keep making progress without setting it off. I don’t want to have any setbacks, just want to keep making progress and give myself the best chance going into next year as possible. I feel like I’m getting stronger, I’m getting more pliable, but I’ve got a long way to go to be able to compete against these guys.”

“I wish I hadn’t known this,” he added, alluding to his experiences of past surgeries, “but I know it very well and I know the process, I know how long it’s going to take. We’ll continue doing all the gym work and continue doing all the protocols and eventually, it will lead to something where I can compete again.”

Tiger Woods announced via X on Monday that he would be unable to play in the annual post-season tournament he hosts, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in two weeks, though typically revealing little else, including a reason why he would not be playing.

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year at the Hero World Challenge,” he posted, while noting that he looks “forward to being tournament host” and spending the week with the tournament benefactor, Hero Moto Corporation. He also announced that he had extended exemptions to Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Nick Dunlap.

I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year at the Hero World Challenge, but always look forward to being tournament host and spending the week with @HeroMotoCorp.

Woods, who will turn 49 next month, announced in September that he underwent a microdecompression surgery of the lumbar spine to repair nerve impingement. Woods did not specify a reason for missing the Hero this year. He has played sparingly since he was in a one-car accident in February of 2021, and nearly lost his right leg as a result. It effectively ended his ability to compete on any kind of consistent basis.

However, he is committed to playing with son Charlie in the PNC Championship Dec. 21-22, and likely will use a golf cart, as he has done before.

In 2024, Woods played only five events and missed the cut in four of them. His lowest score in the 12 rounds he played was 72, which he shot three times. He made the cut in the Masters and finished 60th, withdrew from the Genesis Invitational, and missed the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and British Open.

Nelly Korda has withdrawn from the next two LPGA tournaments due to injury. Korda, the World No. 1, announced on social media Monday that she hurt her neck during practice for the LPGA’s Asian swing, forcing her out of this week’s BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea as well as the upcoming Maybank Championship in Malaysia.

“I’m disappointed to miss these events and am especially sorry to my fans who were looking forward to seeing me play,” Korda said in a statement. “I’m currently resting and working with my team to get better.

“Thank you for all your support—it truly means the world to me.”

Korda did not specify a return date; the LPGA has one Asian Swing event after Malaysia before heading to the United States for the final three tournaments of the season.

Korda, 26, is in the midst of a breakthrough season, notching six wins before June, including the Chevron Championship. Korda also went 3-1 in last month’s Solheim Cup, leading the American team to victory. She leads the Race to the CME Globe standings; Korda has yet to win the season-long points title in her career.
