Jumeirah Golf Estates hosted their annual Christmas Scramble on Saturday, 21st December, kicking off the festive season in style. The event, a Texas Scramble tournament, saw 108 members compete over the Fire course.

Cameron McWhinnie, Assistant Golf Services Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, said, “It was a privilege to welcome our members to the Club today for the annual Christmas Scramble, a cherished tradition that holds special appeal, especially for families, many of whom participated in the tournament. The Fire course was in immaculate condition, a true testament to the dedication and expertise of our greenskeeping team, whose hard work throughout 2024 ensured a world-class experience for all.”

The overall winning team in the Texas Scramble was George Tuck, Adam Priscott, Lee Gilbert, and Charlie Gilbert, with a score of 21 under-par, net 51 (gross 58). The winners carded seven net eagles, three of which came in a row from the third to fifth holes.

George Tuck commented on the round after the prize-giving lunch: “We got off to a strong start and maintained our momentum throughout the day. It was an incredible experience, and we all thoroughly enjoyed playing on the Fire course. Its exceptional condition is no surprise, given the outstanding efforts of the greenskeeping team, who have truly outdone themselves this year.”

The winning team, led by Tuck, edged the runner-up team by one shot. Ursula Lotti, Gregorio Grasselli, Marcello Grasselli, and Jay Chinchankar secured the runner-up place with a score of 20 under-par, net 52. Their round consisted of only two pars, with the rest an array of net birdies and eagles.

The gross division was won by Robert Standing, Tom Neale, Thomas Purdy, and David Bainbridge. The team scored 14 under-par (gross 58), which secured them the win in the gross division following a four-way back-nine countback. Despite making a bogey four on the par-three 11th hole, the team bounced back with three birdies in a row and an eagle three on the par-five 18th hole.

On Sunday, 15th December 2024, Jumeirah Golf Estates hosted the final OMA Emirates Medalford of the year, in association with Unique Holding. The event, played on the challenging Earth course, saw 92 members gather for the grand finale of this year’s series.

During the prize presentation, Cameron McWhinnie, Assistant Golf Services Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, expressed his gratitude: “We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors, OMA Emirates and Unique Holding, for their invaluable support in elevating these monthly events throughout the year. Their contributions have been instrumental in delivering exceptional experiences for our members. I would also like to acknowledge the unwavering efforts of our greenskeeping team. Their dedication to maintaining the course in pristine condition has greatly enhanced the enjoyment of our members throughout 2024.”

The star of the day was Ian Mellows, who claimed victory as the December 2024 OMA Emirates Medalford Champion, in association with Unique Holding, with a score of one under-par, net 71. This remarkable performance marked the highest winning score in recent events, emphasising the demanding nature of the Earth course.

Mellows was the only player in the field to score below his handicap. “Winning today on the Earth course is an achievement I’ll cherish, especially being the only player to outperform my handicap,” said Mellows. “I’d like to thank the entire Jumeirah Golf Estates team for their dedication throughout the year in making these monthly events so enjoyable.” His round featured four net birdies, with dropped shots on the challenging par-three 6th and the strategically bunkered 15th hole.

In the Gross Medal Division, David Bainbridge claimed victory with an impressive level-par, gross 72, despite dropping shots on the second and fourteenth holes, two of the Earth course’s most demanding par fives. Bainbridge’s performance included birdies on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth holes, earning him the best-gross prize. Edward East, narrowly missing out on the Gross Medal, posted a steady round of three over-par, 75, featuring 14 pars and a single birdie.

Division A, for golfers with a handicap index of 10.4 and below, was fiercely contested. Tom Neale emerged as the champion with a round of level-par, gross 72, including back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15. Adam Kane secured second place with a one over-par, net 73, while Gerhard Vorster claimed third on a back-nine countback after posting a two over-par, net 74.

Division B, open to golfers with a handicap index of 10.5 and over, was won by Steve Noon, who triumphed with a score of one over-par, net 73, a four-shot margin ahead of his nearest rival. Nigel Flint finished in second place with a score of five over-par, net 77, beating Martin Ayrton into third place on a back-nine countback.

The Champion Lady of the day was Aalaa Somji, who posted a fantastic round of even par, net 72. Somji’s standout performance included a gross birdie four on the long par-five second hole, demonstrating her impressive skills.

The Junior Division saw strong participation, with prizes awarded for both Gross and Net scores. Sam Robinson claimed victory in the Junior Gross Division, while Ryder Eatson triumphed in the Junior Net Division with a score of three over-par, net 75.

James Finnigan took top honours in the Seniors Division, posting a solid three over-par, gross 75, which included three birdies on the front nine.

In the Stableford Division, a back-nine countback was needed to separate the top two players. Tanya Harrison, the 2025 Lady Captain, emerged victorious with 35 Stableford points, edging out runner-up Reece Malcom, also on 35 points, after a closely contested finish on the back nine. Both competitors displayed excellent form, particularly given the challenging setup of the Earth course.

With the divisional prizes all awarded, attention turned to the OMA Emirates Medalford 2024 Order of Merit, in association with Unique Holding. Following a year of exceptional golf, Jane Vorster dominated the Ladies’ Net and Gross Order of Merit, winning both prizes by a significant margin. In the Men’s Net category, Steve Noon claimed the top spot, having been a regular presence on the prize stage throughout the year. Jayson Hilton emerged as the winner of the Men’s Gross Order of Merit, showcasing his consistent form and impressive scoring ability across the year.

The master of the Majlis, Rory McIlroy, has confirmed his title defence at Emirates Golf Club for the Rolex Series Hero Dubai Desert Classic event from January 16-19 2025.

The four-time winner, of the Middle East’s longest-running professional golf event, will once again return to Dubai in January to kickstart his 2025 campaign on the DP World Tour.

Last January, Rory lifted the Dallah trophy for a record-breaking fourth time (2024, 2023, 2015, 2009) after coming into the weekend ten shots back, before a magical third-round 63 placed him in the final group alongside Cameron Young, as the Northern Irishman held off both the American and Poland’s Adrian Meronk for the title.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Emirates Golf Club for the 2025 event,” said the current Race to Dubai Rankings Number One.

“This is a tournament I relish playing and continuing my run here by adding a fifth title would be really special and an ideal way to kick off 2025.

“The support we get in Dubai is always fantastic, it’s an incredible course with a great atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to what is always a competitive event.”

The one-shot victory in 2024, confirmed McIlroy as just the second player to successfully defend their title after Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher who lifted the Dallah Trophy in 2013 and 2014, with McIlroy also passing Ernie Els’ hat-trick of Dubai Desert Classic victories.

McIlroy now has a total of six trophies in Dubai, including his two victories at the DP World Tour Championship, as he looks to add a third one next month at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of Hero Dubai Desert Classic, commented on the announcement, “It’s fantastic for us that Rory is going to play. We can’t take Rory for granted.

“He’s played a lot in the Middle East, a lot in Dubai, and he’s played a lot of the Hero Dubai Desert Classics.

“He’s announced he’s going to reduce his schedule next year, so for us to get him to commit so early is fantastic.

“Rory is unbeatable pretty much around the Majlis course, which is great and that’s why he enjoys it. I think a lot of golfers will go back to golf courses that they enjoy and play well at. But he’s the master of the Majlis and he certainly brings in the crowds.

More details on the 2025 player lineup will be coming soon in the Rolex Series event which offers a $9million prize pool.

“Up until last week I had played more than I have in a long time. I was going to take some time off and spend some time with the family, regroup, relax and recharge the batteries.

“After this victory and moving to third on the Race to Dubai, I’m going to now go and play the last event of the year in Dubai, the DP World Tour Championship.

“The event before in Abu Dhabi, I’m not able to play in as it’s my wife and my anniversary, so we are going away to celebrate because I am usually always playing golf. We made the decision months ago to have some time away and time to ourselves.

“I played it (DP World Tour Championship) back in ’21 when Collin Morikawa won, it was such a great event and it was my first time to Dubai. But I am looking forward to getting back over there again and playing the golf course a little bit better than I did last time!”

We look forward to seeing you, Billy!

All his knowledge, love and passion is shared with customers, which he fondly calls “Friends”, also in his baking classes. The restaurant is serving healthy and tasty food, made of organic, fresh and healthy ingredients. Parents can enjoy their food, while the little ones can play with their friends in the big play area. Of course, Baker’s Kitchen also serves healthy kid meals option which your kids will love and you don’t feel guilty about. Sven and his wife Heike are not just passionate about healthy food, but they are also very concerned about their Friends’ well-being.

Todd Clements posted what he described as one of the best rounds of his career so far to soar into the first round lead at the Amgen Irish Open.

The Englishman carded an opening five under par round of 66 to sit atop the leaderboard at Royal County Down, one stroke clear of Finland’s Sami Välimäki and Spaniard Alejandro del Rey, with four-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy a stroke further back in a tie for fourth.

.@golfclements leads the way after round at Royal County Down #AmgenIrishOpen

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 12, 2024

The former MENA Tour player, Clements, who won his maiden DP World Tour title at the D+D REAL Czech Masters last year made a blistering start in Northern Ireland, birdieing two of the first three after starting from the tenth before picking up two further shots with an eagle at the par five 18th.

Clements made the turn and birdied the tricky par five first, but Royal County Down bit back as he dropped shots at the second and fourth to drop into the bunched leaderboard in the third event of the Back 9 on the DP World Tour’s Global Schedule.

Not to be deterred, however, Clements fought back and finished with aplomb, with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth earning him the advantage after the opening round on the spectacular links.

“I said that to my caddie walking off, “That’s one of the best rounds I’ve played in my life so far.” It’s a hard course and yeah, delighted how it panned out,” said the 2022 Challenge Tour graduate.

“For me, I drove it great. I hit a lot of good quality shots, and just kind of hit my ball in the right spaces. My caddie was great today, and you know, he had the course mapped out great and it worked well.

“This course is as hard as it gets. Take it day-by-day; cliché. But tomorrow it’s going to be cold; it’s going to be windy and another gruelling test. Sad as it is to say, I’m probably looking forward to it.”

What a golf shot, Rory #AmgenIrishOpen pic.twitter.com/qeGx4uiS10

County Down native McIlroy gave the home crowds something to cheer with an impressive birdie-birdie-birdie finish to join the five-strong pack in a tie for fourth place, along with English duo Marcus Armitage and Will Enefer, South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence and Italian Filippo Celli.

The fundraising efforts for Make-A-Wish Ireland got off to a strong start on the opening day, with 73 birdies or better on the first hole resulting in £29,200 being donated by Amgen and the DP World Tour.

Amgen ambassadors Pádraig Harrington, Shane Lowry and Séamus Power carded six birdies and eagles between them, raising £2,400 after pledging to donate £400 for each time they take a shot from the course this week.

Olympic Silver Medallist Tommy Fleetwood is set to chase more glory in the 2024 Race to Dubai as he competes in the DP World Tour Championship from November 14-17.

Fleetwood, who became a DP World Global Ambassador in June, will join four-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy at the renowned Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates for the season-ending Rolex Series event.

After relocating to Dubai, specifically Jumeirah Golf Estates two years ago, the World Number 11 has enjoyed significant success in the UAE with three of his seven DP World Tour titles coming in the region. He claimed back-to-back wins at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in 2017 and 2018, won the season-long Race to Dubai in 2017, and added another triumph this year at the inaugural Dubai Invitational.

Recently, Fleetwood earned the Silver Medal for Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, standing on the podium alongside World Number One Scottie Scheffler and Major winner Hideki Matsuyama at Le Golf National – the venue of his Ryder Cup debut in 2018.

He will spend two weeks competing in the United Arab Emirates following confirmation he will tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – the first event of the DP World Tour Play-offs, a new two event series also incorporating the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The top 70 available players at the conclusion of the “Back 9” events will gather at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi before the top 50 available players move on to Dubai, as the new-look season comes to a dramatic close.

“It’s always a privilege to be part of the DP World Tour Championship, especially on a course as iconic as the Earth Course,” said Fleetwood. “The Race to Dubai has played a huge role in my career, and I’m excited to be back competing in the DP World Tour Play-offs.

“The UAE has been like a second home to me, and I’ve been fortunate to experience some great moments here – winning in Abu Dhabi twice and lifting the Race to Dubai trophy in 2017 were incredible milestones. It’s a place that always inspires me to play my best golf.”

“Being named a DP World Global Ambassador is a real honour,” he said. “I’m proud to represent such an important partner of the Tour I grew up watching and to help grow the game globally with my Academy.

Dubai-based Rayhan Thomas announced his arrival in Indian professional golf in style by rising to the occasion with a solid final round of four-under 68 and clinching victory on his PGTI debut at the INR 1 crore KGiSL Presents Coimbatore Open 2024 Powered By Prima Donna played at the Coimbatore Golf Club.

The 24-year-old Rayhan (70-67-69-68), who was placed one off the lead in tied second place ahead of the final round, totalled 14-under 274 for the week to prevail by one shot and create history by becoming only the second player to win in his first appearance on the PGTI. Thai golfer Pariya Junhasavasdikul was the first player to achieve the feat when he won the year-end Tour Championship in 2016 on his PGTI debut.

Read more on Rayhan turning pro

Gurugram’s Manu Gandas (71-65-72-67) took second place at 13-under 275 as a result of his last round of 67. Manu thus climbed four spots from his overnight tied sixth.

Chandigarh’s Akshay Sharma (69-65-71-71), who was the leader by one shot after round three, carded a 71 on Saturday to finish third at 12-under 276.

Rayhan Thomas, playing at Coimbatore for the first time, was two-under through the front-nine after he made three birdies and a bogey that kept him in the race. Rayhan, who won twice on the MENA Tour while still an amateur and also represented India in many prestigious events such as the 2018 Asian Games, sank a couple of long birdies on the front-nine.

Thomas, excelling in all departments of his game through the week, stormed into the lead and became top contender when he collected birdies on the 13th, 15th and 16th. Rayhan, who turned pro in May this year, had a few anxious moments on the 17th where his ball was plugged in the bunker. He played it over the green from there but got away with a bogey on that hole thanks to a great chip and putt that helped him hold on to his lead.

Watch Rayhan Thomas seal his world and course record-equalling MENA Tour round at Dubai Creek

The professional from the Dubai Creek Golf Club, who has his roots in Kerala, finally sealed it with a par on the 18th after finding the green in two shots and making a comfortable two-putt.

Rayhan, emerging champion in only his fourth professional appearance, said, “After sinking that final putt, I just wanted to hug my Uncle (Maj. Thomas), who was caddying for me. He had been there for me all week and that meant a lot to me.

“It was a really good round today, in fact my best of the week. I had a little scare on the 17th but then did well to salvage the situation by playing a quality chip on that hole to stay ahead and then producing a couple of good shots on the last hole. The pressure was off when I knew I could make a two-putt to win on the 18th.

A man for the big stage! With a score of 4-under 68 on the final day, Rayhan Thomas didn't let the conditions deter him as he clinched the KGiSL Presents Coimbatore Open 2024 Powered by Prima Donna in style! pic.twitter.com/svpSZ9A6PN

“I feel playing college golf in the United States helped me prepare well for the professional level. You experience a lot of pressure in US college golf because playing for a team your score means a lot more. Growing up in Dubai has also helped a lot as I’ve had access to some of the best golfing facilities there. Coming back to my home country India completes the cycle for me.

“My grit and patience stood out for me this week. There were a lot of birdie chances out there so it was easy to get complacent when you don’t get a birdie. But I was happy with how I stayed patient and kept it going. I really enjoyed my first outing at the Coimbatore Golf Club. It’s a magnificent venue.”

If someone doesn’t want to become a member, how easy is it for them to visit?

Super easy. Book a sim on our website, on the Viya app, via WhatsApp, or by calling our friendly reservations team.

Not a member or golfer? Not a problem.

We’ll be open to guests who want to experience our award-winning dining, innovative drinks menus, and exciting vibe unrivalled by any other sports and entertainment facility in the UAE.

What golf-specific equipment can clients get involved in when visiting, do they need to bring anything?

Not at all. Each of our 17 simulators will be equipped with premium Callaway golf clubs. Additionally, our indoor putting green and 9-hole outdoor mini golf course will feature a variety of Odyssey putters.

Members won’t have to worry about trudging their bags to and from the club, either. We offer our members free bag storage.

Being able to offer PGA Professional lessons must be a big plus with yourself and Olivia Jackson onboard?

Huge. We’re building a top-notch academy here and want Five Iron Dubai to be every golfer’s destination of choice when looking to refine their game (on industry-leading Trackman simulators in an air-conditioned environment, no less!).

With that in mind, keep your eyes peeled for our next coaching appointment, it’s going to be a
good one.

Are there future plans for Five Iron Golf in the region?

Absolutely. We are slated to open six Five Irons in the UAE by the end of 2027 and we’re already preparing plans for our second and third sites.

But it’s not just the UAE we’ve got our eyes on. In short, we think this is just the beginning of Five Iron Golf, in the Gulf.
