The HotelPlanner Tour arrived in Spain this week for the Challenge de Catalunya, which took place at Fontanals Golf Club from May 14–17.

The Challenge de Catalunya marked the second of ten consecutive weeks on the continent, after the Italian Challenge Open kickstarted the European leg as Chris Wood sealed an emotional victory at Golf Nazionale. Fontanals Golf Club hosted last year’s Challenge de España and, with the historic event moving to Isla Canela Links, Fontanals hosted the inaugural edition of the Challenge de Catalunya this year, with a prize fund of €300,000.

A regular stop on the DP World Tour Qualifying School schedule, the Girona-based club hosted Second Stage in each of the last two years, and will do so again later this year, with several of the players in the field having previously teed it up on the parkland layout. The club is situated near the borders of both Andorra and France and provided an interesting test as it sits 3,000 feet above sea level, with the 156-strong field needing to dial in their yardages at altitude. The closing holes also proved pivotal, with holes 16 and 18 ranking among the toughest on the course.

A number of HotelPlanner Tour members teed it up on the DP World Tour at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship before making the short journey from Barcelona to Girona. Road to Mallorca Number One MJ Daffue returned to HotelPlanner Tour action hunting his third win of the season, alongside former BMW PGA Championship winner Chris Wood, who looked to build on his success in Italy.

Pablo Ereno was crowned the Challenge de Catalunya champion after defeating Denmark’s Hamish Brown in a play-off at Fontanals Golf Club.

The 22-year-old home-favourite birdied the last for a six under par round of 66 to force the play-off with Brown, the overnight leader who signed for a 68 to also finish on 22 under par.

Both players birdied the first extra-hole, before Ereno bettered Brown’s bogey on the second with a par to join the HotelPlanner Tour winners’ circle.

Ereno climbs to second place in the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings and he was delighted to come out on top as he looks to earn promotion to the DP World Tour.

“It feels great,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier to get my first HotelPlanner Tour win at home in Spain, it feels awesome.

“It makes it very special that I had my sister and my dad out here, a bunch of my friends too. I feel like I played a little bit better for them today.

“I knew we would have to shoot low today to win. I started well but made a couple of mistakes, a couple of bogeys and a double, every time I made a mistake I just tried to make birdies again.”

Ereno, who double bogeyed the par three eighth amongst six birdies in seven holes, posted his tenth birdie of the round, on the 72nd hole to force the play-off. With the Spanish crowd behind him, Ereno managed to find a way past Brown on the second extra hole.

“Bryce (Easton) and Hamish played incredible today it was really competitive out there and I was glad to make it to the play-off, it was really fun.”

Ereno is on his rookie season on the HotelPlanner Tour, and had already impressed in the opening six events of the season.

“I’ve been playing pretty good this season, I have been practising really hard and the experiences I’ve had already helped me out there today.

“The Jonsson Workwear Durban Open hurt me, as I was tied for the lead with two to play and made a quadruple bogey on 17. I managed to stay patient today which helped me make those birdies at the end.

“I have been learning a lot about my game, which is what is important, as it will help me play better and hopefully play on the DP World Tour soon.”

South African MJ Daffue, Irishman Gary Hurley and Englishman Frank Kennedy shared tied third, two shots behind Ereno and Brown, at 20 under par, with Sweden’s Adam Wallin, Denmark’s Jacob Worm Agerschou and South Africa’s Bryce Easton tied for sixth a shot behind.

Daffue remains in first place on the Road to Mallorca rankings, with Ereno climbing to second, ahead of England’s Will Enefer in third, ahead of South African duo MJ Viljoen and Deon Germishuys in fourth and fifth respectively.

The HotelPlanner Tour now heads to Denmark for the Danish Golf Challenge at Odense Eventyr Golf Club on Odense, from May 21-24.

Spanish LIV golfer Luis Masaveu will swap the bright lights and $30 million prize purses of LIV Golf this week for the quieter surroundings of the HotelPlanner Tour in his home country.

Just days after teeing it up at LIV Golf Virginia, the 22-year-old is back in Spain competing at the Challenge de Catalunya, where the total prize fund stands at €300,000.

“One of the goals I have this year with my coach and my mental coaches is to try to play exactly the same golf no matter where I play,” he explained ahead of this week’s event.

“Sometimes I struggle too much with thinking about my score. I think our job is to try to shoot the lowest score we can, no matter where we play.

“So yeah, my goal is the same — try to shoot the lowest score I can.”

Masaveu admitted there are obvious differences between the two circuits, particularly with the atmosphere surrounding LIV events.

“Of course, it’s a little bit different: there’s no music, and the course conditions are slightly different, but the goal remains the same.”

Fontanals Golf Club – Getty Images

The Spaniard arrives at Fontanals Golf Club with plenty of confidence after recording two third-place finishes at the venue last year.

“Yeah, I really like it,” he said. “It suits my game. You’ve got to be very good off the tee, and I’ve played really well off the tee the three times I’ve played here.

“So all I’ve got to do is repeat that.”

While many LIV players have largely focused solely on the breakaway circuit and the majors, Masaveu has set himself an ambitious target for the remainder of the season — earning a DP World Tour card through the HotelPlanner Tour, as the young Spaniard sees a pathway back into more traditional golf routes.

“I always wanted to play on the DP World Tour as a kid,” he revealed.

“Now that the DP World Tour is letting LIV players compete without being fined, it became a goal of mine from the beginning of the year to get onto the DP World Tour.”

Masaveu plans to play six or seven HotelPlanner Tour events around his LIV Golf and International Series commitments on the Asian Tour.

“Obviously, it’s going to be very difficult only playing six events,” he admitted. “I’ve got to play really, really good golf, and pretty much all six events have to go well if I want to finish in the top 15 on the Road to Mallorca and earn my DP World Tour card.

“But this week is the start.”

The 22-year-old also addressed the recent uncertainty and speculation surrounding LIV Golf’s future, admitting the reaction within the league initially caught players off guard.

“It was a little bit surprising,” he said. “I think we were more nervous in Mexico when everything first happened because everyone knows what the media can be like, especially now with Instagram and how powerful social media is. Everyone was just throwing out opinions rather than actually knowing what was going on.”

Masaveu, however, believes LIV CEO Scott O’Neil has calmed concerns behind the scenes.

“Once we spoke with Scott, things got a lot better,” he added. “At that point in Mexico, the media was saying we weren’t even going to play again this year, so it was definitely surprising. But I think things are getting much better now.”

Luis is paired in the Challenge de Catalunya alongside last week’s winner, Chris Wood and Road to Mallorca Number One, MJ Daffue.
