Tony Finau and family after winning the 3M last year. Stacy Revere
The second-to-last event of the PGA Tour regular season is here, and Justin Thomas will be competing at the 3M Open, a late addition to his schedule as he tries something of nothing in the dwindling moments of what has become a frustrating season. This is the first year that only 70 pros will make it to the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and JT is No. 75 in the standings.
Thomas missed the cut at three of this year’s four majors, but he’ll have a chance at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, to turn his season around. He’ll be joined by fellow top 20 players in the world Tony Finau and Cameron Young. Sungjae Im, Sepp Straka, Hideki Matsuyama and Sahith Theegala are just a few of the other notables trying to get a win heading into the playoffs.
Finau is looking to defend his victory here from 2022, which was the first of back-to-back wins a year ago. He erased a five-shot deficit to Scott Piercy who trudged through the Sunday back nine, leaving room for Finau to sneak through. Finau made four birdies over six holes on his final back nine to win by three shots. He would go on to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic the following week.
Sam Bennett, the low amateur at the Masters and seemingly a constant contender in big events, is playing on a sponsor’s exemption for the 3M Open. The Texas A&M star has made four of five cuts during his first year playing on tour, and he’ll look to keep the stellar play going strong with out outside shot at earning a full PGA Tour card with another solid performance.
This week’s winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.404 million share of the $7.8 million purse.
