Jupiter, Florida is home to one of America’s most prominent golf communities. Pros from across the world have flocked there to hone their skills and live quietly amongst their peers. That quiet was shattered on Tuesday afternoon, however, when four local golfers found themselves caught in a hail of gunfire during a round at Abacoa Golf Course.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the attack, but the rest of the story is much stranger and much more disturbing. According to the affidavit, the golfers were on the third hole when they heard loud bangs from across the lake. They thought it was the sound of fireworks until they looked up to see a 27-year-old Daniel Nobile in his backyard aiming a pistol at them.

“While they were on the third hole, they saw the male, didn’t think much of him,” Jupiter police chief Michael Barbera told WPBF News. “And then all of a sudden, the shots rang out. And they said there was approximately 6 to 10 rounds, and some of them were hitting the ground in front of them. So, they took cover. They were very shocked, obviously very unexpected.”

The golfers, who said they had no interaction with Nobile prior to the shooting, fled via their golf carts and the course was subsequently evacuated. Around 6 p.m., local police surrounded Nobile’s home, where the suspect surrendered peacefully. After searching the house, they found a Glock 17 pistol wrapped in a cloth and hidden in the garage.

While no motive is known, Nobile appeared in court on Wednesday where he was charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder. The judge set no bond pending the results of a mental health evaluation, with the case set to be heard on June 10th.
